FIR filed against ‘Kaminey’ director, producer

Bhubaneswar, A first information report (FIR) was filed Monday against the director and producer of “Kaminey” for allegedly denigrating Lord Jagannath in the film.

The FIR has been filed by Jagannath Sena Sangathan at a police station in Puri alleging that Lord Jagannath has been shown in poor light in the just released movie, which is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and produced by UTV Motion Pictures Ltd.

“Jagannath has been shown in poor light in the movie. In a scene, it has been written ‘Apna Hath Jagannath’ in the toilet with a semi-clad model under the writing. It has hurt the sentiments of Jagannath devotees,” said Somnath Khuntia, a member of the Sangathan.

The Sangathan also protested in Puri and submitted a memorandum before the state governor through the district collector.

“An FIR has been filed in the police station saying that some scenes in ‘Kaminey’ have hurt religious sentiments. We have lodged a case and investigating the matter,” said Sudhakar Sahu, incharge of Puri town police station.

Bollywood has become less hindustani now: Jackie Shroff

New Delhi, Aug 23: Bollywood star Jackie Shroff who has been a part of films strong on the emotional quotient like Parinda, Karma and Border, believes that Bollywood films are losing out on the Indian flavour these days. The actor, who won a Filmfare award for his role in the 1989 film Parinda, said that films based on Indian values which touch the emotions of people are missing from the canvas of Bollywood. “Films based on family bonding, on emotional attachments have become less in number, the hindustani flavour is gone from Bollywood films,” Shroff, who was in the capital to promote his film Kisaan, told PTI.

The actor, who has just completed 26 years in the industry with about 150 films to his credit, said that things have changed quite a lot now. “Some of my films have run successfully for more than 25 weeks in a row, nowadays films are declared hits if they can make it big in the first three days. The passion is lacking in films. Film making is more of a business these days. Life has become so fast, no one has time to stop and think. You have to move with the times, you can’t help it. Whether we are progressing or degrading, God knows,” Shroff said. (PTI)

A TV show puts street singers in spotlight

Kozhikode (Kerala), Aug 23: They have been singing on trains and in other public places to make a living all this while, but now 17 families of street singers in Kerala will find themselves in the spotlight, showcasing their talent on TV. “VKC Street Light” is a new reality show with a difference – its 100 episodes will not have any competition or elimination. It is being aired on India Vision TV channel here and got off to a flying start on Saturday. “This is certainly unique in more ways than one because the 17 participating families are people who eke out a living singing on trains and street corners and who do not even have a shelter of their own,” Sudheer Ambalapad, a journalist turned ad filmmaker who is directing the show, told IANS.

“By the end of the show, all the 17 families will have a home for them.” Calicut Landmark Builders have volunteered to build two bedroom houses free of cost for each of the 17 families. The programme became a reality after Ambalapad broached the subject with businessman V K C Mammed Koya, a former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator. “When I first heard of the idea, I felt really happy (and I thought) let me do something for a good cause,” said Koya who has met the entire production costs of around Rs 500,000. The show will be telecast weekly twice on India Vision TV. The selection of families was a tough affair because Ambalapad had to spend a lot of time convincing the singers. “I used to observe these singers on my journeys and I shortlisted them. And for the past one year I was tracking them and convincing them. Now, after 60 episodes have been shot, many still cannot believe that this is a reality,” said Ambalapad.

Among the 17 participating families are 50 children, many of whom don’t have much of a school education because they have to play instruments or sing for a living. Pushpa, for instance, is a 25-year-old woman who has two small kids and sings on trains. She is a participant. Kaman Bhai is another participant. He has his roots in Ahmedabad but is a resident of Kerala now. Interacting with the singers at every show will be leading social figures, film personalities and leading music directors. “At the end of the programme we are aiming to get in veterans like Ilayaraja, Lata Mangeshkar , K J Yesudas and other music greats,” added Ambalapad. “No plans of me getting married to anyone. I’m still a growing boy,” Ranvir said in a text message to IANS from Mumbai.

Meanwhile, rumour mills have been working overtime that his wedding with Konkona has been fixed for Dec 27. If grapevine is to be believed, Konkona’s mother, actress-turned-director Aparna Sen, is busy putting together trousseau for her daughter in Kolkata.

The two actors have been dating each other for three years, but have always refrained from talking about their relationship in public.

For now, both are looking forward to the release of their respective films. While Konkona’s will be seen with Ranbir Kapoor in “Wake Up Sid”, Ranvir will feature in David Dhawan’s “Do Knot Disturb” and later in Rajat Kapoor’s “A Rectangular Love Story”.

Mallika gets saucy with Dolce & Gabbana!

The high-end
The high-end clothing designer is now dressing the crossover star, in an arrangement recently made that first had Mallika in a sexy suit for her special recognition by the City of Los Angeles, the first of its kind ever received by an Indian actor.

Does this mean that gone are the days of Mallika's eye-popping sensational creations that steal headlines and fill up news and website pages? Not necessarily, says the star. "D&G has some very saucy dresses. I have a few on hold that I think my fans will like."

This is Mallika's first collaboration with a top designer, which also happens to be a favorite of hers. "D&G is the epitome of class. I'm very happy to be associated with the D&G brand," she goes on to say, "We make a great team."

Making history in Hollywood with the first special recognition of a Bollywood star by the City of Los Angeles, the first star from Asia invited to the Twitter offices, the first Bollywood star to have a milkshake named after her in Hollywood, starring in the first Indo-American co-production in decades ("Hisss"), soon her first all-American film playing a lead role inspired in-part by Kamala "the female Barack Obama" Harris, and now a muse for world-class Dolce & Gabbana... one can only wonder what's next for the B-town bombshell!

Mallika has been residing in Los Angeles since the beginning of post-production on HISSS, co-starring Irrfan Khan, and is set to start shooting her new film there in November.

“I can never be like my father (in terms of acting)…he is way beyond anyone to be like him. I don’t even have any aspirations to be like him because I know that’s not happening. I just hope whenever my father sees my films, he likes my work,” Shahid said.

Apparently the father and son are going to come together in a film for the first time. Yet untitled, the project will go on floors early next year.

Toronto film fest to have strong Indian flavour

Mumbai,

Mumbai, The forthcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), starting Sep 10, will have a strong Indian presence — while two mainstream Bollywood films “Dil Bole Hadippa” and “What’s Your Rashee?” will have their world premieres, Dilip Mehta’s “Cooking With Stella” has been selected for a screening in the prestigious Gala section.

Jon Amiel’s “Creation”, a bio-pic on Charles Darwin, is also being premiered in the same section where Dilip’s film is being screened and he says he is thrilled by the honour.

“The Toronto International Film Festival is, after Cannes, undoubtedly the most significant festival worldwide. To have one’s film participate in it is glory enough, but to have a gala screening and a world premiere is mind-blowing,” Dilip, brother of Canada-based Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, told IANS.

“For me, as first-time feature director this was such a tremendous high to have our film in the company of such an amazing film. ‘Creation’ nipped us all in the post but we were right up there. TIFF selected ‘Cooking With Stella’ for a gala screening for our world premiere on September 16th.

“The numbers are daunting. Approximately 3,000 plus films are submitted for the festival. Of these about 350 are selected of which 15 or so have the distinction of a gala screening at the amazing Roy Thomson Hall,” he added.

This was the very section where Deepa’s elegiac “Water” that had Lisa Ray, John Abraham and Seema Biswas in lead roles had been premiered. While “Water” focussed on the difficult lives of widows in the 1930s, Dilip’s film is in a different mood space.

“For 34 years, I have covered death, misfortune, war, plagues and other human tragedies for Time, Newsweek, National Geographic and other such major journals. I entered the world of cinema with ‘The Forgotten Woman’, a hard documentary to portray the reality of the widows of India.

“Similarly ‘Cooking With Stella’ also looks at a classic Indian tragedy, that of servants and employers but without wanting to give a lecture on morality.”

While filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker’s “What’s Your Raashee?” stars Priyanka Chopra and Hurman Baweja, “Dil Bole Hadippa” is Anurag Singh’s directorial debut. Produced by Yash Raj Films, it stars Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor. Both the films are female-centric.

Apart from screenings, Indian actresses Seema Biswas and Shriya Saran will walk the red carpet.

Sikandar – Movie Preview

New Delhi,

New Delhi, After making comedies like “Chalo America” and “The King of Bollywood”, director Piysush Jha returns with suspense-thriller “Sikandar”. Releasing Friday, the film is about the tensions in Kashmir seen through children’s eyes.

Set in Jammu and Kashmir, the film has Parzan Dastur and Ayesha Kapoor in lead roles along with R. Madhavan and Sanjay Suri. It revolves around teenage boy Sikandar Raza (Parzan), who dreams of playing football at the national level, and his friend Nasreen (Ayesha). But things take an unexpected turn when he finds a gun on the road.

Sikandar’s parents were killed by militants when he was four years old. And now he lives with his foster parents and he is only concerned about their happiness and football.

One day, on his way back home from a school football match, he finds a gun lying on the road. Despite warnings from Nasreen, he picks up the gun and his life is never the same again after that – he enters into the darker side of his nature.

The quiet yet strong Nasreen becomes Sikandar’s conscience keeper and also tries her best to pull him out of the murky goings-on. But to her dismay Sikandar has sunk so deep that things go beyond his control.

Jha says “Sikandar” is not a children’s film despite having children as protagonists.

” ‘Sikandar’ is not a children’s film at all. It just has two important characters as children but it’s for everyone. Just like ‘Taare Zameen Par’ which had a child protagonist and still appealed to people of all ages, this film too will appeal to one and all,” said Jha.

“‘Sikandar’ basically reflects the situation of Kashmir seen through the eyes of children… It’s a film full of hope but told in a manner that is not preachy. It is involving and intriguing and connects at an emotional level. The underlining theme is about fighting against the odds, living up to expectations and coming out with a clear conscience,” he added.

Produced by Big Pictures and Sudhir Mishra, “Sikandar” has already garnered its share of positive reactions when it travelled to festivals like the Bollywood and Beyond Film Festival in Stuttgart, Germany, and the Los Angeles Indian film festival.

Earlier slated for a March release, the film was delayed by the tussle between producers and distributors over revenue-sharing of forthcoming releases.

Kangana goes light-hearted

Director Rai, however, is confident that she will pull off the role in the new flick. “Yes, I have studied her filmography quite closely and I know for sure that Tanu Weds Manu would finally showcase Kangana in a different light. There is a definite humour to the film which thankfully is poles apart from life vs death roles that Kangana has played in the past,” he said. Explaining the reason behind finalising Kangana, Rai said: “When I was narrating the film to her, she came across as someone who was very passionate and energetic when it came to films. Moreover, what worked for me was the fact that she was taking a personal view on the subject. Now that’s the kind of girl I wanted for the film since I wanted her to add something of her own to the character as well.”

Life Partner – Review

Film: “Life Partner”

Film: “Life Partner”
Cast: Govinda, Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai, Fardeen Khan, Genelia D’Souza
Director: Rumi Jaffrey
Rating: **

Some of the writing invested into this not-bad comic look at the roller-coaster called marriage is surprisingly sharp.

For example, there’s this Gujarati family lorded over by a tycoon (Darshan Jariwala) in Cape Town who remains rigidly rooted to conventions that ended 50 years ago. Back home in Gujarat a modern business family run by a liberal patriarch (Vikram Gokhale) ends up giving his daughter (Prachi Desai) to the NRI tycoon’s mousy son (Tusshar Kapoor). The conflict that ensues is likeable and in a fully filmy way, believable.

Elsewhere this spoilt rich girl (Genelia) with a father (Anupam Kher), who never bothered to discipline her, gets herself a domesticated husband who does all the work while she attends to various disastrous hobbies.

Genelia as the destructive daughter gets to sink her teeth into a meaty part.

Witty and sometimes genuinely funny, “Life Partner” is a light bubbly take on the pitfalls of various kinds of marriages, arranged or otherwise, and how to avoid perils of getting into a marital alliance where the partners know nothing about the future.

While Genelia is happily over-the-top, Prachi in the rounded sensible part of a Gujarati girl standing up to her autocratic father-in-law does well for herself. Of the two young leading men, Tusshar as the timid believer in virginity as a gift to his bride suits his part and does at least one sequence when he bursts into tears after Prachi accepts his proposal with tonal correctness.

But it is Govinda as the frazzled divorce lawyer who brings the house down. Govinda gives the kind of tongue-in-cheek performance that once made him the number one choice for roles that required comic interpretations of social problems. He works well in combination with every actor in this film, wooden or hammy.

Rumi Jaffrey’s direction is most of the time even in tone. But the last half hour with its screeching sermonizing gets on to slippery ground. Nonetheless “Life Partner” is a decent inoffensive marital comedy mostly free of double-meanings.

Mumbai film studios to continue shooting despite H1N1 shutdown

Mumbai,

Mumbai, Bollywood’s leading film studios will continue with their shooting schedules though schools, colleges, cinema halls and malls in the city will be shut down from Thursday for a week to contain the spread of swine flu.

“All shooting schedules are going on according to previous bookings. As of now, no shoots have been cancelled due to any flu scare,” Parvesh Shinde, booking manager of Film City, told IANS.

Rajinder K. Ridlan, booking manager for Mehboob Studio added: “All shootings are going on and no shoots have been cancelled.”

Sunil Amin, booking manager at Kamal Amrohi Studio, asserted: “This is already a laid-back period due to monsoons and recession and there is not much shooting happening. However, swine flu has got nothing to do with the filming process as a film, if it has to be shot, will be shot under any circumstances. Hence everything is taking place as per schedule.”

An official from R.K. Studio said: “Our work is going on the normal way… film shootings don’t stop.”

A representative from Filmistan Studio, Goregaon, confirmed shooting for Himesh Reshammiya’s next “Radio” will be on. The source also informed that despite the swine flu alert, the studio was booked for Dharma Production’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer “My Name Is Khan” — the set for which was being prepared.

While Shinde and Amin didn’t reveal the names of the films currently being shot at their studios, industry sources said Mehboob Studios is booked for two films — Salman Khan starrer “Veer” and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Guzarish”.

The Maharashtra government Wednesday announced a weeklong closure for educational institutions and public places in this metropolis to curb the spread of the H1N1 virus.
