Indian films yet to go global: Anurag Basu

Mumbai Oct 30 (IANS) Bollywood director Anurag Basu says Indian films are screened at various international festivals and do good business abroad but maintains they are yet to go global as they are not widely watched by the foreign audiences.

'We assume that our films are going global through this kind of festivals but other than NRIs no one watches them abroad. Films are released abroad, making good business but that doesn't mean that they are going global,' said Basu who was at the 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) to catch up on foreign movies.

The director, whose much talked about 'Kites' is ready for release, is happy that MFF is bringing in world cinema to the city.

'It is a fantastic opportunity to get to see great films from across the world, but people should not have the impression that Indian films become global if it is screened at some foreign film festivals,' added Basu.

He said Thai and Korean film industries have gone global as their films are widely viewed across the globe.

'Thai and Korean films were quick to make a global impact despite the fact that they are much younger to Indian film industry,' said Basu.

When asked about his forthcoming film 'Kites' starring Hrithik Roshan, he said: 'The film is complete and I am waiting for the prints.'

Ranbir, Katrina end WIFW grand finale in style

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week
New Delhi, Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif sashayed down the ramp at the grand finale of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) for designer Rohit Bal, bringing down the curtains of the five-day event in style.

Dressed in an embroidered white sherwani, Kapoor Wednesday night managed to steal the hearts of many girls in the audience, who couldn’t stop gushing about the star’s chocolaty looks. Pretty Katrina Kaif, attired in a short white dress, looked like a Barbie doll.

Another highlight of the show was a live performance by Orissa’s Prince Dance Group that recently won the dance reality show “India’s Got Talent”.

Since Bal is always associated with grandeur, the sets reflected flamboyance and style.

The glass ramp had gold lotus flowers underneath. The main show area was draped with golden curtains.

Complementing the ambience perfectly were the clothes that talked about the Mughal era when India was the land of maharajas (kings).

The collection was appropriately called Yasas, which means grand in Sanskrit.

Talking about his collection, Bal said: “The collection is a reflection of incredible talent that we have in India in terms of artisans and craftsmanship. The line is an ode to India’s rich heritage.”

“It is about India, which was once known as the ‘Golden Peacock’. Through this line, I am bringing that golden era back to India,” he added.

The collection had a mix of brocades, velvets in the pre-Mughal and Mughal designs like long and short anarkalis, sherwanis, jodhpuri pants, dresses and long coats.

The collection will also be retailed through Wills Lifestyle outlets across India.

Daughter of well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar, Zoya informed that her writer filmmaker-actor brother will not only act in the film, but also pen the dialogues for it.

Throwing light on the film, she said: “It’s a coming of age genre. But it’ll be simpler than Luck By Chance’ and simpler to understand. A feel-good factor will be there in that sense,” said Zoya on the sidelines of the ongoing 11th annual Osian’s Cinefan Film Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema.

Asked is her movie was in any sense a follow up to the upcoming Abhay Deol-starrer “Road Movie”, she said: “The trend’s been there. Look at Jab We Met’. It is a road film. It’s got that vibe of a road movie. And the promos to the Road Movie’ are gorgeous too.”

Yash Chopra To Receive FIAPF Award For Outstanding Achievement at MAMI

FIAPF Award

Can't think of film without man-woman relationship: Imtiaz Ali

New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS) He is not resting on his laurels after the success of 'Love Aaj Kal'. Imtiaz Ali is already thinking about different stories and scripts to make into film but says whatever he makes will have the man-woman relationship as its focus.

'I haven't decided yet which story I am going to make next. I have a few stories swimming around in my mind. I don't know how they are going to take shape or which one is going to become a compulsive reason to make a film,' Ali told IANS in an interview.

'All the stories that I have, have something to do with a man-woman relationship. I can't think of any story that doesn't involve a man-woman relationship,' he added.

The three-film old director also hinted at a spy movie with a similar background.

'I also have a story which is a kind of secret service type where there is a guy who discovers himself by being the obscure secret service guy. But even there, though there is not the presence of too many women, the enduring trait is his relationship with a woman who won't be seen on screen too much,' said the 38-year-old.

Asked about his affinity towards such themes, he said: 'There is no deliberate reason why that happens. May be I just want to discover it.'

He added: 'I don't want to restrict myself but at the same time I'm not going to try to prove that I'm different or I can reinvent myself. I'll just make the movie that I think is the best that I can make,' said the director who struck gold with 'Jab We Met'.

'I don't represent a style or a function or a system of working. I only represent myself and I am a victim of my own limitations. But I have an advantage too. I am a man of common taste. What I like generally people tend to like too. It's a boon,' he added.

Despite his films being a hit, Ali is known for his self-criticism.

'That's exactly how I feel about my movies. I know that my movies have had certain lapses. It wasn't perfect. None of my movies were. More than anyone else I am aware of what those mistakes were.

'After a while I start to see defects in them and they start becoming more and more and after a certain point I start to dislike it. And I start wishing I could correct certain obvious mistakes,' he explained on the sidelines of the 11th annual Osian's Cinefan Film Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema.

Rumours were rife that he had signed a deal with Ashtavinayak Cinevision Pvt. Ltd. for a film.

Asked about it, he said: 'I haven't signed a deal with Ashtavinayak yet, but we are in discussion so that I make a film for them.'

And what about his deferred project 'Rockstar'?

''Rockstar' is a story that I have, but I still don't know what to do with it. I am trying to figure it out,' said Ali.

My role in 'Paathshala' is just about 30-40 minutes: Shahid Kapoor

Kaminey

Mumbai, Oct 29 (IANS) Shahid Kapoor's 'Paathshala', which has been ready for the last one year, will finally hit screens next year and the actor says his role is substantial even though it is not long enough.

''Paathshala' is small in comparison to some other films that I am doing. Moreover, I not a quintessential hero in the film. However, it isn't as if I have a special appearance in the film, as has been speculated by some. I have a substantial role that lasts for 30-40 minutes in the film,' Shahid, who had two releases -- 'Kaminey' and 'Dil Bole Hadippa' this year --, told IANS.

'Paathshala' was earlier being co-produced by choreographer-turned-filmmaker Ahmed Khan with Big Pictures. However, as per current developments, Eros International would be presenting the film.

The first look of the film was revealed a year ago with 'Karzzzz'. It was expected that the film would release in January 2009, but it continued to move ahead. Directed by award-winning Marathi film director Milind Ukey, 'Paatshala' is expected to release in the first half of 2010.

'Yes, the film moved from Big Pictures to Eros and they would be making plans to line up the film in a proper manner. However, I am sure they would have the right campaign in place for the film's release. The film has to be protected and released when there is no other film of mine coming up,' said Shahid, who plays a teacher in it.

The film brings together Ayesha Takia with Shahid after 'Dil Maange More' and 'Fool-N-Final'. Incidentally, the two had worked together years ago as child artists in the famous commercial for the health drink Complan.

The film also stars Nana Patekar along with child artists Swini Khara, Ali Haji and Dwij Yadav.

Set against the Indian education system, 'Paathshala' deals with contemporary and socially relevant issues regarding children. It claims to carry a heartfelt message for children, parents and teachers.

'It's a very socially relevant film and talks about the education system in the country. I am really happy to have played a role in it. I have seen the rushes of the film and really cried throughout. I get really emotional when watching a film. Even during 'Taare Zameen Par', I cried throughout and was looking around me if anyone was watching me,' he said.

Unlike 'Taare Zameen Par', which was shot on real locations, 'Paathshala' was filmed on a set. To give it an authentic look, Khan had erected a massive set of a school at Film City -- it consisted of class rooms, dormitories, principal's cabin, staff rooms, half a dozen huge corridors, basket ball court, garden, assembly hall, music room and canteen.

Delay in film sours Ghai, Sunny Deol relationship

Mumbai, Actor Sunny Deol and producer Subhash Ghai are at loggerheads over the completion and release of “Right Yaa Wrong”.

“I’m the producer of the film. So I’ll be blamed for the delay. I’m used to it. Every film of mine that gets delayed I take full blame for it,” Ghai told IANS.

He says the real reason for the delay in “Right Yaa Wrong” is the additional shooting.

“We decided to add two songs since we all felt there wasn’t enough music in the film. Once the shooting is complete it’s very hard to co-ordinate everyone’s dates. Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma are busy artistes. But it’s finally happening. And we will complete the additional shooting soon. We are releasing the film on January 6,” he added.

That should come as a relief to Sunny as well as Shilpa Shetty who’s the leading lady in “The Man”.

According to a source, the fate of “The Man” depends entirely on “Right Yaa Wrong”.

“The release of the Subhash Ghai-Sunny Deol project keeps getting postponed repeatedly. This is affecting Sunny’s own production ‘The Man’. Both have a common factor – Neeraj Pathak who directs ‘Right Yaa Wrong’ and co-directs ‘The Man’. The fate of one effects the other.

“Sunny is going through considerable financial hardships. It’s not easy for him to complete his pending projects right now. The funds have dried up. But once Subhash Ghai releases ‘Right Yaa Wrong’, Sunny will move ahead with his other project,” said the source.

Rs.1 lakh for used towel! Welcome to online celebrity bidding

New Delhi, Imagine shelling out Rs.100,000 for a used towel! A lot of people might, if the towel belonged to a celebrity. From clothes to cricket bats – Indians are fast opening up to the idea of bidding for celebrity memorabilia online.

“People have started buying such merchandise nowadays. And there are various reasons to it – some buy them for the resale value of an item, some go for it because they are a fan of the celebrity or some just want to give for charity,” Deepa Thomas, senior manager (Pop Culture) at eBay, told IANS.

Thomas says the craze among people for celebrity memorabilia started around 2005. A Salman fan paid as much as Rs.100,000 for his used towel.

Thomas says her company decided to cash in on the demand in 2005 only and the trend is now scaling high.

“The money people are ready to shell out for such memorabilia’s depends on how rare the item is and also on the brand power of the celebrity. Between 2005 -2008, ebay has earned Rs.1.8 crore through sale of personalised celebrity auctions and we gave the money for charity,” added Thomas.

Kolkata-based Riddhi Nair decided to bid for Olympic gold-medalist Vijender Singh’s boxing gloves auctioned on choreographer-director Farah Khan’s chat show “Tere Mere Beach Mein” because she was moved by the way his mother brought him up.

She spent Rs.17,800 for the item and says she will treasure it like “heirloom” forever.

“I happened to see the repeat telecast of ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’ where Vijender’s mother spoke about how she never bought a new sari for herself for a long time so that she doesn’t have to compromise on her son’s training. It left me very emotional.

“I was touched to see his rising – from a remote village to being a world champion. It’s very thought provoking. It is the perfect example for my daughter that she must always do something big in life,” said Nair, a 33-year-old housewife.

Another motivation for Nair to bid was that the money will be transferred to Mumbai-based NGO Sneha, which works towards quality nutrition, education and health care of women and children.

Nitin Jain, a 39-year-old investor, bid for Priyanka Chopra’s autographed Gavin Maguel designer dress auctioned on Farah’s show. He paid Rs.50,000 for the outfit.

Jain says he often bids for items if the proceeds go for charity, but also had a special eye on Priyanka’s dress as his 15-year-old daughter is a huge fan of the actress.

“Recently, there were several items that were auctioned on ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’ – the chat show on STAR Plus. We had bid for many of them and were, in fact, the second highest bidders for Bipasha Basu’s shoes. But my daughter is a Priyanka Chopra fan – so she also wanted it,” said Jain, who is based in New Delhi.

Other items sold through the show include Shahid Kapoor’s cap for Rs.28,500, Kareena Kapoor’s blue dress for Rs.22,300, Yusuf Khan’s cricket bat for Rs.60,750, et al.

Selling celebrity memorabilia also makes business sense for celebrities themselves at times, says small screen actor Sachin Sharma, who launched a web portal called sbuy two months ago. TV and movie stars can auction their items through the site.

“There are many celebrities in India who don’t get their due. And when they land in tough times and need money, they can turn to such auctions. I had a friend from the industry who wanted to sell his car but wasn’t getting the right price from the dealer. But he struck a much better deal with a fan,” said Sharma, who was seen in “Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii”.

Sharma’s website has already had 300,000 hits in two months, he claims it is evidence to the demand of such items nowadays.

All the Best – Review

Film: “All The Best”
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Mugdha Godse
Directed by: Rohit Shetty
Rating: ** 1/2

In his first really decent and meaty role since “Munnabhai”, Dutt gets into the satirical groove effortlessly and fluently playing a visiting Bade Bhaiyya from abroad whom his kid brother Fardeen Khan (tolerably befuddled) must fool into believing he’s married and decent.

The guys in Rohit Shetty’s comedies are anything but decent. Rascals and rogues of the first order, Devgn and Khan are splendidly supported by a sparkling cast of comic actors ranging from Asrani to Johnny Lever to the wonderful Ashwini Kalsekar (remember how cheesy and charming she was in Rohit Shetty’s “Gol Maal Returns?”) to Sanjay Mishra (as a zonked out wannabe householder who says ‘Just chill’ as though his tongue had just been through a sugarcane-juice machine).

The screenplay (Robin Bhatt) juices the material for all it’s worth. The constant flow of cheesy-breezy dialogues is littered with high-school humour but blessedly no vulgarity. This is one comedy you could take your mom to see without once walloping a wince into the wanton soup.

The burlesque is fast-paced though surprisingly restrained and has room galore for PJs. The one-liners are so silly and graffiti-like in their basic humour, you can’t but titter at the trivia wrapped in gloss that makes welcome room for Pritam’s pacy music without getting in the way of the one-liners.

So ok. This one doesn’t leave you… er blue in the face. The comedy is purely situational and the style purely ‘Rohit Shetty’. That means a bit of slapstick, a bit of that rapidly-moving tongue in the cheek, and a lot of Ajay Devgn.

And if you add Sanjay Dutt to the bubby buncy comic brew… man, you’ve got a show that’s on the road from the word go. This time the setting, if you must know, is Goa.

Shetty doesn’t use the touristic spot as a character. You suspect he places his colony of characters in the Goan location so they could all be camera-framed into a streamlined stampede.

There are only three female characters in the show, the rest are all guys playing conmen, goons, gangsters, wheeler dealers, warriors and worriers all of whom display an exemplary comic strength.

Sanjay Dutt gets it right after a long time. He has a lot of fun doing his part and he lets us share his enjoyment. Ajay Devgn’s comic timing has gotten rapidly dead-on under Shetty’s tutelage. He gives Dutt tit for tat, and then some more.

Not all the material is uniformly amusing. Towards the finishing line you do begin to wonder how much longer it would take this wonky wacky world of wispy and reparable wickedness to set itself right.

Neil Nitin on shopping spree in Tihar Jail

Mumbai, Oct 22 (IANS) Neil Nitin Mukesh went to Delhi's Tihar Jail and came back with a bagful of goodies made by the prisoners, including a blanket, a shawl, sweets and other edibles. The shopping arcade in the jail premises sells everything under the sun, says the actor who will be seen as a prisoner in his next movie.

'There's a shopping arcade at Tihar where everything under the sun made by the prisoners is branded TJ (Tihar Jail) and sold. I was told the revenues from these handmade Tihar goods comes to Rs.7.5 crore every year. I bought a kambal (blanket), shawl, kurta, sweets and other edibles,' Neil told IANS.

'Do you know they have 10-day meditation courses in there, a full Vipassana where the yoga guru comes and stays inside the prison?'

Neil spent Monday afternoon in what is described as Asia's largest prison as part of the campaign to make his film 'Jail' connected to a larger reality about the life of prisoners.

'What I saw in Tihar was not just prisoners put in there for punishment, but human beings who have been put in a 400-acre city with the purpose of reforming them and making them suitable for mainstream existence when they are released,' he said.

Neil was accompanied by his co-star Manoj Bajpai, director Madhur Bhandarkar and music composer Shamir Tandon.

Neil, Manoj and Bhandarkar were immediately recognised by the inmates. 'Every barrack has a television with 20 channels. So they had seen our movies.'

'What I saw in their eyes was an amazing pain. We had taken along a small orchestra. Shamir Tandon and all of us sang Lataji's 'Data sun le maula sun le', followed by 'Kitne ajeeb rishte hain yahan par' and 'Sikandar' from Bhandarkar's 'Page 3'. When we sang 'Sikandar' the prisoners burst into a dance. This was the only time I saw them really let go of themselves,' said Neil.

The song 'Data sun le' will now be played at Tihar every morning as part of the prisoners' daily prayer meetings. Bhandarkar's film will also be screened on a DVD for the inmates.

The two-hour-thirty-minute visit was peppered with moments that have changed Neil's life.

'There was a cage filled with birds. I hate to see caged birds. I requested the authorities to free them. He listened to me, allowed me to enter the big cage and free the birds personally. It was the most liberating experience of my life,' said Neil who spent time talking to inmates, getting to know their minds and hearts.

The actor plays a prisoner in his next film 'Jail' and says reality is completely different from reel.

'It is one thing to play a prisoner no matter how authentically; it's another to actually go into this world away from the free world and experience the feelings of isolation inside,' said the actor.

Blue opens well, but may not be enough to revive BO

Oscar winners A R Rahman
Can Oscar winners A R Rahman s music and Resul Pookutty s sound salvage Blue, the most expensive Hindi film made this year? Though the film took a great opening - Rs 51 crore gross worldwide in the opening weekend, according to producers Ashtavinayak - analysts and insiders doubt whether the film will be able to get returns on investment. Made at a budget touching Rs 100 crore at pre-meltdown rates, analysts said a preposterous storyline and some terrible acting may have put paid to the industry s grand revival plans. Bollywood, which has been having a bad year with only a handful of hits, had been banking on Blue and two other releases All the Best and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna to beat box-office blues. Ghajini, last year s biggest hit, which was released with 1,450 prints, grossed Rs 90 crore worldwide in the opening weekend. Shree Ashtavinayak s Blue , released with 1,800 prints across 2, 250 screens, saw the highest occupancy at 60-80% at most multiplexes. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgan s All The Best and UTV s Main Aurr Mrs Khanna saw a decent occupancy of 50% and 40%, respectively. Prakhar Joshi, head, programming, PVR Cinemas said Blue grossed Rs 2.25 crore over the weekend. Devang Sampat, senior VP, Cinemax, said while Blue and All The Best saw 65-70% occupancy, it was Main Aurr Mrs Khanna that saw a low 40% occupancy rate. We have given equal treatment to all the films and are running 450 shows across our property with 150 per day. Together, the three movies have garnered around Rs 3 crore across our chain. Blue and All The Best have got the highest collections of around Rs 1. 20 crore each, while Main Aurr Mrs Khanna grossed around Rs 60 lakh, he added. Blue grossed around Rs 6.50 crore on the day of release, whereas its Telugu version garnered around Rs 25 lakh. Analysts said occupancy rates of all three films had dropped by 20-30% on Saturday, and that the poor content of all three may have given Dharma Productions Wake Up Sid a fresh lease of life which saw 85-90% occupancies at many multiplexes. Meanwhile, the weekend occupancy of Blue, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna , All The Best at Inox stood at 54%, 61% and 30%, respectively. The only comedy flick of the festive season All The Best saw a better response than the much hyped Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, which performed below expectations at the box office and found it difficult to impress audiences even on day one. While, All The Best gathered Rs 1.80 crore on day one, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna saw a lower collection of Rs 1.25 crore.

I was extremely nervous before walking the ramp: Aamir Khan

HDIL India Couture Week

Mumbai, Oct 14 (IANS) He is in showbiz for more than two decades, yet Bollywood actor Aamir Khan was nervous before his ramp debut for Salman Khan's 'Being Human' show at the ongoing HDIL India Couture Week. He said he wanted to go back home.

'I was extremely nervous because I have never done it before. I am not used to doing all this. This is not my world. But I did it just for my friend Salman and to support the cause,' Aamir told reporters Tuesday after the show.

'When I was rehearsing, the show area was empty still I was nervous. I thought that when I'm nervous now, what will happen when I will walk the ramp in front of the audiences. And I thought I should go back home,' he added.

Before starting the walk, the actor stood on the ramp for a second, looked around, smiled at everyone, took a deep breath and very shyly started walking maintaining eye-contact with the audience and acknowledging their cheers.

Despite his nervousness, he charmed everyone with his boyish looks and cute smile.

Once he got over the initial inhibitions, Aamir entertained people by dancing with the kids who had initially done a small jig at the beginning of the show.

Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Arbaaz Khan, Salman Khan and Sohail Khan too walked the ramp.

Other than Aamir, Ajay Devgn too made his ramp debut and he was also very scared before walking down the ramp.

Actress Amisha Patel, who was there to support the cause, told IANS that the nervousness of these actors was very evident, as they had never walked the ramp before. But it was good to see them all come together for a good cause.

Another shy actor and Salman's good friend Sunny Deol too was supposed to make his ramp debut.

'He was here but he is very shy. He didn't know that he had to walk the ramp. As soon as I told him, he hid somewhere,' said Salman jokingly.

'He was telling me behind the ramp that he would be there,' he added.

I’ll do important roles till 80 like Ashok Kumar: Amitabh

New Delhi, Amitabh Bachchan
New Delhi, Amitabh Bachchan has never been busier. The Bollywood megastar, who turns 67 Sunday, has three films lined up for release, is hosting a popular television reality show, is to walk the ramp for a top fashion event – and has no plans to retire in the near future.

He says he’ll be happy to follow in the footsteps of legendary actor Ashok Kumar, who played strong roles even at the age of 80.

“I would disagree that actors of my age don’t get important roles to play in movies. Look at Dada Muni (Ashok Kumar)…he was an example. He kept doing important roles even till he was 80 years old,” Amitabh told IANS.

“I can’t be playing the lover boy anymore. So I do all those roles that suit a 67-year-old,” said the film icon who has completed four decades in the Indian film industry.

At his age, Amitabh is one of the busiest actors in tinsel town. The megastar says he had finished shooting for his forthcoming films “Aladin”, “Teen Patti” and “Paa” before heading to Singapore for three months.

He is now preparing to sign more projects.

“I was away with a friend of mine (Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh) who had a medical condition and I was out of the country for three months. Since I knew I wanted to be with him and that it would take some period of time for him to heal, I deliberately finished all my pending work by June,” Amitabh said.

In all his forthcoming projects, Amitabh will be seen in different avatars.

In “Aladin”, he will sport overgrown locks for the role of a contemporary genie, “Paa” will see him playing a child suffering from progeria, which causes premature ageing, and “Teen Patti” features him as a mathematics genius.

While “Aladin” will hit screens Oct 30, “Paa” will release Dec 4 and “Teen Patti”, which also stars Hollywood legend Ben Kingsley, will open to audiences Feb 12 next year.

Till then, Amitabh is making his presence felt on the small screen after three years as the host of Colors’ reality show “Bigg Boss”, which has celebrities staying inside a specially designed house under constant camera surveillance and no contact with the outside world.

“‘Bigg Boss’ was the first thing I took up (after returning from Singapore). There are many people who want to make a film with me fortunately, so I will now talk to them,” he said.

The actor is also fairing well in the ad world as he emerged among the top five Indian celebrity brand endorsers in a recently conducted survey.

And he is also set to scorch the fashion runway at the HDIL India Couture Week on his birthday. He will display a creation by his favourite designer duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla.

“Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, is music director Pritam Chakraborty’s eighth release this year and he has once again done a great job by composing music that is energetic, contemporary and pleasing.

“Aa jao meri tamanna” sung by Javed Ali is a breezy song. The combination of high and low pitch vocals gives this romantic number an edge. In short, it is sweet and hummable.

The song also has a remixed version, which is faster in pace. But the original is much better.

“Follow me” is a hip-hop number and has Hard Kaur behind the mike. It has a contemporary feel and Hard Kaur excels in what she does best – rap.

Next in line is “Main tera dhadkan teri”, which is a power-packed song with vocals by three talented singers – KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur. The energetic track has good musical backing.

The remixed version of “Main tera dhadkan teri” has nothing extraordinary to offer.

“Oh my god” sung by Mika Singh and Sunidhi doesn’t impress much. It starts with the typical wedding music, but lacks punch and good lyrics.

Up next is “Prem ki naiyya”, a confluence of rustic vocals and western music that has been crooned by Neeraj Shridhar and Suzzane D’mello. But this song does get a tad boring.

The remixed version too doesn’t have anything new to offer.

“Tera hone laga hoon”, another mushy offering by Pritam, is a song already popular on the radio and music channels. Sung by Atif Aslam and Alisha Chinoy, it starts with English lyrics and then graduates to Hindi. It’s a beautiful, soothing love ballad that is well sung.

The remixed version has more beats and increased pace.

Finally there is the best song of the album – “Tu Jaana na”. It has three versions apart from the original, which starts with a chorus. It’s a soft song by Atif Aslam that instantly strikes a chord with the listener. The musical backing is neither too low nor too loud. The vocals are a plus for the song.

Next is the remixed version of the song, which is disappointing. The beats in the song seem to be forced and not properly placed.

Then we have the reprise version sung by Soham, Rana Mazumdar and Ashish Pandit. It is quite similar to the original song; only that the singers are different. Nonetheless, a nice version.

Finally there is the unplugged version, which is the best. Kailash Kher’s voice takes the song to another level altogether. One can listen to this song again and again for its soul-stirring effect.

On the whole, the music of “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” is a must hear and has the potential to be on top of the charts.

Pirates of Bollywood: Film to expose murky world of piracy

New Delhi, Oct 8: Here’s a crime thriller that could be Bollywood’s first feature film exposing the murky world of piracy – a problem that costs the world’s largest movie industry millions every year. Titled Pirates, it is being made by Percept Picture Company close on the heels of Divya Khosla’s short film on the subject. “Pirates is a platform for the industry to unite for this cause and I am extremely glad to receive an enthusiastic response from like-minded companies,” said Shailendra Singh, joint MD Percept Ltd in a statement released here on Thursday. To be directed by Ashu Trikha, the movie will also highlight the trials and tribulations of a filmmaker and his personal attempt to stop piracy. Singh says that from companies such as Pritish Nandy Communications, T Series, Sanjay Ghodawat Group, Maxwell Entertainment, and Prasad Labs to individuals like David Dhawan, and Sanjay Gupta are supporting him in his endeavour.

Every year India’s entertainment industry bears a loss of Rs 16,000 crore and 820,000 jobs due to piracy as reported by Ernst & Young, India, one of the world’s leading professional service organisation. Pirates, which will be shot at real locations, will be realistic and investigative in nature. It will be showcased at prominent international film festivals to create global awareness and garner support. “Percept has always recognised the power that cinema has in making a social difference. We were pioneers in Cause Cinema, through our film Phir Milenge (2004) addressing AIDS. We are approaching many more partners and talent to truly make this a film by the industry for the industry,” adds Singh. (IANS)

London Dreams – Preview

Salman Khan
Two childhood friends had little in common, except the connection their families had with music. While Arjun’s (Ajay Devgn) life was consumed by a passionate drive to get on stage and realize his grandfather’s unfulfilled dream, Mannu (Salman Khan) had little interest in his father’s music instruments and was content with remaining a child at heart; bold, loud and boisterous, and enjoying the good things in life.

Never had they expected music to solidify their friendship and then test it with catastrophic results…

Arjun, an abandoned child, ran away from an uncle who was his only family in an unfamiliar land. He roamed the streets of London struggling to pursue his sole dream of foraying into the world of music and showmanship. He forged a band with Zoheb (Rannvijay Singh) and Wasim (Aditya Roy Kapoor), two brothers who’d duped their relatives in Pakistan to travel to London in pursuit of their musical aspirations, and Priya (Asin), a beautiful and young music enthusiast.

Far away in Punjab (India), Mannu took to playing in local wedding bands to make ends meet. Shortly after bringing Mannu to London to make him a part of his band, Arjun realized that he had blundered by creating the biggest threat and obstacle to his ambition.

Manu, incredibly gifted, became an instant opiate of the masses with his unique and irreverent style of performing. What took Arjun years to achieve, Mannu did overnight. Arjun felt betrayed by the God to whom he’d surrendered everything in exchange for eminence in music. His (Arjun’s) pangs of jealousy and insecurity became worse when Mannu won over his secret love, Priya.

Battling his inner demons and consumed by rage, Arjun devised a sinister plan to destroy his best friend and adversary. Over a three-city tour spanning Paris, Rome and Amsterdam, Arjun sent a naïve Mannu on a downward hurtling rollercoaster ride of sex and drugs before a grand finale at the historic Wembley Arena, where Arjun hoped to regain and enjoy his moment of glory.

But as a rude shock awaited Arjun, it also turned into a humbling and introspective experience that taught him the real meaning of acceptance.

From Vipul Shah, the maker of supreme blockbusters as Namastey London and Waqt, London Dreams, lavishly mounted and embellished, is an intense and powerful drama about passion, ambition, envy and realization, with a distinct musical backdrop. With a stellar cast, it promises to be one of the most compelling motion picture experiences of 2009.

Mr. Bachchan approached Sanjay Dutt for 'Aladin': director

Sujoy Ghosh

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) Director Sujoy Ghosh says that it was Amitabh Bachchan who approached Sanjay Dutt to play Ringmaster in 'Aladin'.

'After I narrated 'Aladin' to Mr. Bachchan, we discussed who could play the role of 'Ringmaster'. We agreed that it had to be Sanjay Dutt. Next day I was supposed to call him. But, to my surprise, before I could speak to him, Mr. Bachchan had already contacted him,' said Sujoy Ghosh, the director of the film, in a statement released here Wednesday.

The 50-year-old immediately agreed to do the film, but on a condition.

'Yes, he didn't want anyone to fiddle around with his look. His only condition was that he wanted the moustache of 'Ringmaster' to be kept intact. Of course, we had no reason not to agree,' said Ghosh.

The actor was excited about the project because for the first time he was doing such a role.

'Sanjay actually became quite childlike when he was narrated the concept of 'Aladin'. He hasn't worked in a film belonging to this genre before. The legend of 'Aladin' and 'Genie' is known worldwide and he didn't require much thinking to be a part of the project.

'As a fun loving villain who was capable of showing the mean side of his any moment, the character was tailor-made for him,' said a source.

Starring Amitabh Bachchan as Genius - The Genie, Riteish Deshmukh as Aladin and Sanjay Dutt as Ringmaster, the film is releasing Oct 30. It also marks the debut of Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandes who is paired opposite Riteish.

Ashutosh knew about my packed schedule, didn't offer me his next: Ash

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) Aishwarya Rai has refuted rumours that she was to play the female lead opposite her husband Abhishek Bachchan in Ashutosh Gowariker's next 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se'. The actress says that the director knew about her packed scheduled and the discussion never took place.

Recent media reports suggested that Aishwarya was to play the lead role before Asin was finalised for the film opposite actor Abhishek. But both - the actress and filmmaker - deny it.

'I don't have the dates right now as my schedule diary is super packed. This film ('Khelein Hum...') starts next month. So there never was that possibility,' Aishwarya, who played Rajput princess Jodhabai in Gowariker's historical epic 'Jodhaa Akbar', told IANS.

'And since Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) is a close friend and his main lead is my husband, they obviously knew it. So the discussion didn't even arise,' she added.

Gowariker confirmed it saying: 'I had not approached her (Aishwarya) for 'Khelein Hum...'. Aishwarya, for me, belongs to a fairytale. She is a quintessential princess and by far one of the finest actresses we have.

'But we need to plan things in advance. She is extremely professional and hence I would never like to upset her schedules in any way. I'm very happy with the coming together of Abhishek and Asin.'

'Khelein Hum...' will feature Abhishek as freedom fighter Surya Sen, who was the chief architect of anti-British freedom movement in Chittagong, now in Bangladesh.

This will be Gowariker's second period film after 'Lagaan'.

Urvashi confirms being west bound with The Bounty Hunter

Urvashi Sharma.

Things are looking up for Urvashi Sharma. After Naqaab [2007] where she had an author backed role and more recently Baabarr [2009] where she managed to make an impression in spite of limited screen time, the young woman is getting aggressive about her film career. While she is picking and choosing her Bollywood films quite carefully, she has gone ahead and signed a British film titled The Bounty Hunter.

"Yes, I can now confirm that I have signed the film. We were in talks earlier and hence I wasn't at liberty to talk. However, now since everything is packed and sealed, I can happily announce my involvement with the project", says Urvashi, who is now out of the 8 film contract with a leading music company and is free to choose films at her own will.

The film would be directed by Sunandan Walia who has earlier directed a documentary film titled Days and Nights in an Indian Jail [2003]. The same production company (Endboard Productions), which had produced this documentary, would be making The Bounty Hunter.

The Bounty Hunter comprises of British and British Asian cast including Kulvinder Ghir from Bend It Like Beckham. On the strength of its acclaimed script, The Bounty Hunter would be funded by U.K. Film council.

Meanwhile Urvashi is happy to see momentum gathering w.r.t her film career. "I am looking for good work but it has to come with good money as well", she laughs, "I am not willing to compromise on either of the two. Of course I am not just sitting and waiting for things to happen to me. I have approached filmmakers myself."

"Unfortunately, the ones on my wish list are either on the post production of one of their films or have already signed someone else. I am happy with their responses though since they seem positive and promising. I am sure they would have me in mind for their next projects", she says hopefully.

When it comes to her being in the wish list of the filmmakers who want to work with her, she is taking her steps quite carefully.

"Yes, there have been offers but let me talk about them once there is something concrete on paper", she says in a guarded tone, " Meanwhile, I am looking at wrapping up work on Aditya Datt's Chai Garam [Govinda, Celina Jaitly] and Mukti [Sanjay Dutt, Shabana Azmi, Vinod Khanna, Suneil Shetty]."

“Wake Up Sid” gives “Do Knot Disturb” a beating

New Delhi,
New Delhi, Debutant director Ayan Mukerji’s charming “Wake Up Sid” about a young man and a woman five years older has not only wowed critics but pulled in the crowds too, sidelining the Govinda starrer “Do Knot Disturb”.

The box office received a shock with Ashutosh Gowariker’s “What’s Your Raashee” that released Sep 25 but proved to be tedious for audiences with its length and 13 songs.

But the buzz is back with “Wake Up Sid”, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, that released Friday along with “Do Knot Disturb”.

” ‘Wake Up Sid’ is doing extremely well. We’ve had an occupancy of more than 90 percent across 17 shows over the initial weekend and it is still going strong while ‘Do Knot Disturb’ had only a two-day run with close to 75 percent despite 16 shows,” Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, told IANS.

“We are expecting ‘Wake Up Sid’ to continue a good run at least until the Diwali weekend, which has major releases like ‘Blue’, ‘Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna’ and ‘All The Best’. Though we have ‘Acid Factory’ on Oct 9, we are sincerely doubtful about its future in multiplexes,” he added.

Made at a budget of around Rs.15 crore (Rs.150 million), “Wake Up Sid” has been produced by Dharma Productions Pvt Ltd and distributed by UTV Motion Pictures with around 700 prints worldwide.

” ‘Wake Up Sid’ has had a very good occupancy and opening over the first weekend. It is a different movie for different people and is totally a multiplex movie. It is going to have an extended play,” said a source from PVR Cinemas.

“It has done what ‘Rock On!!’ did last year… it has evoked people’s hidden past and is so associative. While ‘Do Knot Disturb’, despite having almost the equal number of shows as the former (around six each per property) did have a good opening, but it fell flat in no time,” the source added.

“Do Knot Disturb” has been co-produced by Vashu Bhagnani and Big Pictures and directed by David Dhawan. Released across 1,060 screens worldwide, it stars Govinda, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Riteish Deshmukh.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, however, thinks it is too early to tell.

“We kept around 10 shows each for both the movies across different properties and the result has been around 60 and 80 percent respectively for ‘Do Knot Disturb’ and ‘Wake Up Sid’,” said Raizada.

“The response for the latter has been very good and this one is in fact sustaining too but, as far as the long run is concerned, nothing can be said as the business has mostly been done during the initial weekend,” he added.

John has Rules for a Ride on his Bike!

Bips,
Bipasha loves bikes and bike rides, and who best than beau John Abraham to go for an adventurous bike ride? But, Bips, it seems does not like to go with John for her bike rides, the reason….apparently Bips feels that John has a little bit of his Parsi streak in him when it comes to bikes. Firstly, John treats his bike with utmost care, almost like a family member, secondly and quite surprisingly, John has a dress code for Bips, when he is taking for a ride. Bipasha says " John is too fussy when it comes to bike rides, he will ask me to wear long shirts and clothes in which I am comfortable sitting on the bike". Well, Bips there is nothing to worry about, John is just getting a little protective about the Bong Bomshell he will be crusading in and around town on the bike and that's a sweet gesture, we think.

'Bigg Boss' launch was hit by heavy rains, says Big B

rain twice

Mumbai, Oct 4 (IANS) Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who is set to host the third season of 'Bigg Boss' that goes on air Sunday, says that the launch of the reality show was washed away by rain twice within a day.

'It just got over and it almost did not! The launch of 'Bigg Boss' got washed away twice in one day by the heavy and incessant rain over the hills here (at Amby Valley). Thunder, lightning...so close, it was blinding,' Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com early Sunday morning.

'The sets, the electronics and all the preparations got drenched and short circuited and the sound of the rain was so loud that even within the closed environment it was impossible to work,' he added.

The shoot, however, went on thanks to a production team of 'close to 700' people.

The third season of 'Bigg Boss' has celebrities like Poonam Dhillon, Claudia Ciesla, Kamaal R. Khan, Sherlyn Chopra, Vindu Dara Singh, Shamita Shetty et al competing with one another. The show has the celebrities staying inside a specially designed house under constant camera surveillance and no contact with the outside world.

The 66-year-old commends the inmates who will spend weeks together inside the Bigg Boss house.

'I think it is most brave of all of them to have decided to get away from life for 84 days, leaving home and hearth in the care of others. I wish them all well and will be meeting up with them every Friday and Saturday,' he wrote.

The contestants will be locked up in an actual house in Lonavala and Bachchan wrote about the preparations and the set-up.

'The set is massive... Intricate control rooms, electronics, cameras, microphones... it is quite something,' he posted.

'And they (the Channel producers) have built an entire chalet for me when I come in to work over the weekends - bedrooms, makeup rooms, hall, dining area, kitchen, verandahs, huge courtyard... a Spanish villa in design with the personal touches of family photographs all over the house. I could move in here! This is some operation,' he added.

Tribute to R.D. Burman in “Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna”

Mere deshi ki dharti
Mumbai, R.D. Burman’s music continues to inspire today’s filmmakers. While “Kaminey” had two tracks of the late composing legend, now one of his songs will be heard in the forthcoming movie “Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna”.

The legend’s composition “Bade achche lagte hain yeh dharti, yeh nadiya, yeh raina aur tum” makes a vital appearance in Sohail Khan’s production “Main Aurr Mrs Khanna”. The song was chosen because Kareena Kapoor’s character is named Raina in the film and the word ‘raina’ is prominent in the song.

The film required a strong nostalgic theme song between Kareena and Sohail to create a sense of intimacy between the couple. And Amit Kumar’s song from “Balika Badhu” was everyone’s favourite, it became the chosen one overriding the other popular choice “Raina beeti jaye” from “Amar Prem”.

Both “Balika Badhu” and “Amar Prem” were made by Shakti Samanta.

“It’s a song that we all chose unanimously. It comes on when my character meets Kareena. When we meet, the song plays in the background. Since her character is named Raina, we loved the idea of having the song,” Sohail told IANS.

Interestingly, Sohail’s other production “Kissaan” also revived an old song “Mere desh ki dharti”. But there’s a difference.

Explains Sohail: “While ‘Mere deshi ki dharti’ is part of the film’s soundtrack, we haven’t put ‘Bade achche lagte hain’ in the album for ‘Main Aurr Mrs Khanna’. Though we’ve bought the rights for the song. Let’s just say, we mean it to be a tribute to R.D. Burman and the tradition in Hindi lyrics celebrating raina (night).”
