Kalam denies role in Indo-French film

NEW DELHI, Nov 28: Former president APJ Abdul Kalam has denied that he is appearing in an Indo-French film titled I Am Kalam. But actor Gulshan Grover insists Kalam “has given a shot as himself in the movie”.

Kalam’s office said in a statement: “Kalam has no plans to act or associate with any film. The news is only a speculation and it is the individual’s imagination with a business motive.” Bollywood actor Gulshan Grover, who stars in the movie, had earlier told IANS that Kalam had made a small appearance in I am Kalam, a film Gulshan said was inspired by the former President.

Speaking in New Delhi, Gulshan said he had finished working on “a very interesting film called I Am Kalam. I shot for it recently in Rajasthan. It’s an Indo-French film. The director is an Indian - Madhav Panda. “This film is about a child’s ability to dream, a child who gets inspired after watching the former president, how he has the right to dream big and work towards that dream, and that is what our former president says,” he added.

Asked if Kalam was aware of this film, Gulshan replied in a taped interview: “Yes, very much, and in fact he has kindly done a little bit of appearance in the picture as a cameo.” (IANS)

Bollywood worried over Dubai debt crisis

The market generates 40-45 per cent of the overseas collections for Bollywood films

Dubai’s debt woes have got Bollywood producers and distributors worried as the city is a significant contributor in the West Asian market for Hindi films.

The Dubai premiere of upcoming Bollywood film Paa, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, has already been put on hold, though the film’s co-producer, Reliance Big Pictures, attributes this to logistical constraints.

According to trade experts, the overseas market is crucial for the business of several Bollywood releases that are lined up, including De Dana Dan, Radio, Rocket Singh, Paa and 3 Idiots, with the Gulf region being a significant market. “Over Rs 50 crore is riding on these films, with the overseas market expected to generate at least 25-30 per cent collections for these films,” says a Mumbai-based trade expert.

According to distributors, the Dubai market generates 40-45 per cent of the overall overseas collections for Bollywood films. Any major movie starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan or Akshay Kumar typically generates gross collections of Rs 35-40 crore in the overseas market.

The Gulf, US and UK together account for over 70 per cent of the overseas collections for any Bollywood film. Of this, West Asia’s contribution is always among the top two overseas markets, says Hiren Gada, director, Shemaroo films, a movie production and distribution company that is a significant player in the home video market.

“Bollywood films do very well in Dubai’s 40-50 screens. Blue, the Akshay Kumar-starrer action film, recently did its best business in the Gulf market,” says Gada, whose company had the international distribution rights for the film.

Indians comprise nearly 40 per cent of the expat population in Dubai and they are cautiously spending on movies, says a senior executive working for a movie and video distributing agency in Dubai. “I am not an expert on real estate. But it is too early to talk about the impact on the Bollywood market in Dubai,” says Khushi Khatwani, the promoter of Al-Mansoor, a movie distribution company and a distributor of major Bollywood films in Dubai.

Agrees Jawahar Sharma, the head of international distribution, Reliance Big Pictures: “People will spend on movies even in recession, as evident from the box office collections in the US, despite the financial crisis last year. But the frequency of going to the theatre for watching movies may come down.”

Mumbai, Director Prakash Jha has completed shooting for “Rajneeti” and clarifies that the characters in the political drama are not inspired by any real life politician.

Aamir Khan not to sign new films for one more year

Mumbai, Nov 27 (IANS) Aamir Khan, who is currently busy promoting '3 Idiots', has decided not to take any new acting assignments in 2010 because he wants to concentrate on his three home productions.

'Aamir had earlier decided to take one year off. But now he has decided to extend his sabbatical by one more year. Filmmakers who have approached him with projects have been told that Aamir intends to take approximately one more year to supervise the post-production and final look of his three films,' said a source close to the actor.

He wants put his home productions -- Abhinay Deo's 'Delhi Belly', Anushka Rizvi's 'The Falling' and his wife Kiran Rao's directorial debut 'Dhobi Ghat' -- in order.

After the tough physical and emotional preparation for 'Ghajini', Aamir had decided to take one full year off to rejuvenate himself.

He also wanted to relax and spend time with his wife and children. That's precisely what he has done for the last one year. But now Aamir would be taking one more year off because he feels all three projects need serious fine-tuning and have been delayed because he has been busy finishing and promoting director Rajkumar Hirani's '3 Idiots'.

'The only way Aamir feels his three productions can be completed and released in 2010 is if he sets aside all his own acting assignments to look into them. So, he isn't signing any films in 2010 either,' said the source

'It requires guts to say no to the best roles going in Bollywood and to a reported fee of approximately Rs.30 crore per film. But Aamir suffers no security pangs about not signing films. He told a friend he will work at his own pace, no matter what the temptation or provocation to take on extra work,' added the source.

Farhan Akhtar to bond with Hrithik, Abhay in sister's film

Mumbai, Nov 28 (IANS) Male bonding has always been a strong theme in Farhan Akhtar's career as a director and actor and so he is now excited about starring along with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol in sister Zoya Akhtar's new film.

'Having two friends like Hrithik and Abhay Deol to do this male bonding film with me is a blessing. Abhay I've known from the time he stepped into my role in Reema Kagti's 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd'. I get along famously with both of them. So shooting this male-bonding film with Hrithik and Abhay in Spain should be loads of fun,' Farhan told IANS.

The yet-to-be titled film will go on the floors in April next year and Farhan says he will have to wrap it up before September.

'Hrithik has been a true friend from the start. He not only did that cameo in Zoya's 'Luck By Chance', he also agreed to accommodate Zoya's new film. I start directing 'Don 3' from September 2010. And Zoya's film had to be completed before that. Hrithik adjusted his dates accordingly,' he said.

Farhan's directorial debut 'Dil Chahta Hai' was a tale of three friends played by Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna. Later he debuted as an actor with 'Rock On!' that was again about four friends who form a music band.

Admitting that male bonding plays an important role in his films, he said: 'That's true. But no one will say Zoya's film with me, Hrithik and Abhay is in any way similar to my 'Dil Chahta Hai' or to 'Rock On!'.

'Zoya's film is a different zone of male bonding. I've done just one scene with Hrithik in Zoya's 'Luck By Chance'. Now I've a chance to do a whole film with him. Both Hrithik and Abhay are actors I admire greatly.'

In these pictures, Rahman is seen entering the White House amidst tight security and is later seen posing along with his band.

Bollywood composers rediscover Sufi music

New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) "Allah ke bande", "Piya Haji Ali", "Khwaja mere khwaja", "Arziyaan"...the list is long. Bollywood is surely smitten by Sufi music as composers churn out chartbusters by weaving its melodious flavour into their songs.

The divine strains of Sufi music in film songs have become a huge hit with listeners and music directors are cashing in on its increasing popularity. Most soundtracks today boast of at least one Sufi song and they are popular among all age groups -- from seasoned music lovers to youngsters.

"Music is the voice of god and Sufi music is dedicated to him. When you sing for god from your heart, it turns out to be soul stirring and listeners enjoy it too," Sukhwinder singh, who has crooned various Sufi tracks, told IANS.

The qawwali form of Sufi music has been used in Bollywood films for a long time, but there has been a recent influx of Sufi songs.

"Allah ke bande" ("Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II"), "Man ki lagan" ("Paap"), "Rubaru" ("Maqbool"), "Yeh hausla" ("Dor"), "Maula mere maula" ("Anwar"), "Khwaja mere khwaja" ("Jodhaa Akbar"), "Ya Ali" ("Gangster - A Love Story"), "Maula mere" ("Chak De! India") and "Arziyaan" ("Delhi-6") are few examples of the genre's success.

Forthcoming film "Kurbaan", which stars Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, too boasts of a Sufi flavour in many of its numbers, the prominent ones being "Shukran allah" and "Ali maula".

Composers like A.R. Rahman, Pritam Chakraborty, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal Bhardwaj and Salim-Sulaiman have often weaved in Sufi tunes in films. And the singers who have crooned popular numbers include Kailash Kher, Sukhwinder Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan, Zubeen Garg, Rekha Bhardwaj and Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

"From my angle, people today like songs with high notes and that's why they really connect to Sufi music. This makes the song popular," Said singer Javed ali, who sang the beautiful Sufi composition "Arziyaan".

"Both Sufi music and Sufism convey the messages of true love. It is not only about the love between a man and woman, but something beyond that," Kailash Kher, who rose to fame after "Allah ke bande", was quoted as saying by a newspaper.

But a few singers are of the view that the genre is not being presented in its true sense by Bollywood composers.

Popular Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans feels Bollywood music directors take a lot of liberty with the genre.

"The words and the essence of the 'kalams' (works) cannot change, only the orchestra can change. It is a good thing that Sufism and its music are reaching out to the masses, but the music should not detract from tradition," said Hans Raj.

Sukhwinder feels that the genre should not be over-utilised in films lest it lose its lustre.

"Too many Sufi songs would take away the true fragrance of purity from them. Over use would dilute it. Herd mentality is never productive," he said.

R.D. Burman rediscovered with 'Pancham Unmixed

Mumbai, Nov 26 (IANS) After four years of hard work, finally Mumbai-based writer and filmmaker Brahmanand Singh has completed "Pancham Unmixed" - a film on legendary composer R.D. Burman's life and time - and released it on DVD.

"It was in my mind for a long time. I wanted to do something definitive on him. I have tried to explore his music in the film. It was possible only by talking to people who have been around him, worked with him and also by talking to some new composers who have a fantastic interpretation of his music," Singh told IANS.

Director Vishal Bharadwaj released the DVD Wednesday. Singer Amit Kumar and composer Shantanu Moitra were among others who were present at the event.

The two-hour long film features Pacnham's close friends, colleagues and admirers like Asha Bhosle, Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Manna Dey, Shammi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor and talk about the music genius.

It took Singh four years to complete the film on Pancham who revolutinised Bollywood music. Some of the memorable songs of Pancham include "O haseena zulfon wali", "Aaja aaja main hoon pyar tera", "Chura liya hai", "Khaali haath sham aayi hai," "Mera kuch samaan", "Saagar kinare" and "Ek Ladki ko dekha".

"All the people who worked with him are big names. Even though they were willing to talk, it wasn't that easy to get them at one call. I tried to get everything that I could about him. It was a huge task," said Singh.

Prominent among Singh's documentaries are "Asghari Bai" - on an octogenarian legendary dhrupad singer and "A Burden of Love" on Alzheimer's disease.

The Collectors Edition DVD pack also has a coffee table book on the composer.

Shahrukh Khan is a funny man: Amitabh Bachchan

New Delhi, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says Shah Rukh Khan left him in a jovial mood after the latter called him to confirm his presence at the premiere of upcoming film “Paa”.

“Shah Rukh has remained with me in the late afternoon. He is a very funny man and shakes me into joviality when I inform him about the premiere and his absolute presence there. He tells me, ‘He is already there, black suited and with anticipation of seeing ‘Paa’,” Amitabh posted on bigb.bigadda.com.

“Aamir too communicates today and confirms his presence,” he added.

The cast and crew of “Paa” – including Amitabh, Abhishek and director R. Balakrishnan have major plans for the film’s premiere Dec 3 in Mumbai.

Amitabh plays a 12-year-old progeria patient in “Paa” and he had to stick on several pieces of specially crafted clay to get the right look for the movie. The disease causes premature ageing among children.

International make-up artist Stephan Dupuis designed Big B’s look and the megastar had to sit for five-six hours for the make-up.

The 67-year-old says he is now anxious about how the audience and critics will react to the film.

“Slowly but surely the jig saw puzzle will begin to unfold. The test of all our hours and hours of effort at the film shall now be up for scrutiny. And within two hours and 14 minutes the verdict shall be passed. Once passed, shall remain passed. Such is the destiny of those that participate in this wondrous game of filmmaking,” he said.

The film is releasing Dec 4.

No DTH premiere for 'Hook Ya Crook': David Dhawan

Mumbai, Nov 27 (IANS) Director David Dhawan dismisses as 'baseless' media reports that his film 'Hook Ya Crook' won't release in theatres but would instead arrive directly on DTH.

'Where did you hear this one now? Nothing like this is happening at all. I am not surprised by such rumours though. With so many news channels and other media forums to be fed, there is something that has to be written about day in and day out,' Dhawan told IANS.

'Really, all these talks of 'Hook Ya Crook' releasing directly on DTH instead of in theatres is stretching one's imagination a little too far. This is news to me as well,' said Dhawan, who has been attached to the project for quite a few years now.

Considering that 'Main Aurr Mrs Khanna' had arrived on DTH immediately after its opening weekend, a possibility like that can't really be ruled out.

But Dhawan said: 'It would be catastrophic if the film arrives on DTH so early. It is an expensive film and a big one at that. It needs to be seen in theatres first rather than on small screen.'

Announced in December 2006, 'Hook Ya Crook' -- starring John Abraham, Shreyas Talpade, Genelia D'Souza and Amrita Rao -- has taken the longest so far for a Dhawan film to reach the finishing mark.

Change in cast, availability of the right actors, recession plaguing the industry and accidents during the shoot are just some of the many reasons that have delayed the film's completion.

With producers UTV Motion Pictures not putting their money on any new and big projects, the production house may well be pinning its hopes on its long-standing project 'Hook Ya Crook'.

'By December, we should be through with the shoot of 'Hook Ya Crook'. Since the film is set in a jail and cricket plays an important part in the narrative, we are waiting for the dates from some key Indian cricket players.'

Talking about the delay, he said: 'There is so much that is required in the making of a film. While we are waiting for this last schedule to get over, which would last for about 10 days in total, there is good progress being made on the post-production activities. The film is certainly not on hold, as some rumour mongers are busy predicting.'

Dhawan is gearing up to finish the film soon and release it in 2010.

I used to often get punished in school: Aamir Khan

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) He might be a superstar today, but Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has no qualms in admitting that he has undergone various punishments during his education days - from getting caned to kneeling down for the whole day.

'When in school, kneeling down in front of the principal's office was a regular feature. I have also been caned a couple of times. It is strange that when you get caned, you don't realise the pain instantly, but after two seconds it shoots so badly... It's awful,' Aamir told reporters here.

'I used to be more interested in sports and hence used to always forget doing my homework. Also, poor marks used to create problems for me. I used to get scolded very often,' he added.

The 44-year-old actor also revealed that he only studied till Class 12 and never had a very good college life.

'My education has only been till 12th standard because after that I got into films. Even while in college for my 11th and 12th, I used to hardly attend classes because I was always busy with dramatics.

'Because of this, I didn't have a very rocking college life. But during the shoot of '3 idiots' I lived the moments of a student's life and enjoyed the way students do,' said Aamir, who used to study in Narsee Monjee College in Mumbai.

Aamir along with actors R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi was in the Capital Wednesday to promote his upcoming film '3 Idiots'. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is slated to hit screens Dec 25.

Talking about the film that is based on author Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel 'Five Point Someone', Aamir said it's not only for engineering students but for every student and parent in the world.

'The film is not meant only for engineering students. It applies to all students and parents, who want to see their kids successful. It questions what success is. It questions what a child really wants to do. It raises various issues important to this generation.

'However, it's told in a humorous way because that's how Rajkumar Hirani makes his films,' said the actor.

Asked when he would again wield the megaphone, Aamir told IANS: 'I don't know at the moment what I will make and when will that be. Let's see.'

Sonu Nigaam composes song as tribute to Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 25 (IANS) Paying tribute to Mumbai, a year after the 26/11 terror attack, singer Sonu Nigaam Wednesday unveiled a song he has composed in memory of the victims and heroes.

The song 'Ungli uthe to, koi bare to, kardegi bagawat Mumbai' was unveiled exclusively at the Big FM office Wednesday.

Written by Subbu, the song has been sung by 15 singers.

'I composed this anthem because I thought if this has come my way, there must be some good reason behind it,' Sonu said.

Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod and Hariharan among others have sung the song.

Even Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has lent his voice to the opening lines, before the song.

‘Film on 26/11 will be insensitive’

New Delhi, Nov 24: It is not insensitive of filmmakers to bring the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks alive on the big screen, says Bollywood veteran and politician Vinod Khanna who features in such a telefilm himself because it was a tribute to the victims.

“I know and understand that the terror attack is a sensitive issue, but it’s not as if people haven’t seen it or heard about it. So where should be the problem in making movies about it? Filmmakers don’t and won’t make a movie to play with people’s emotions,” Khanna told IANS over phone from hill station of Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra.

“If at all films on 26/11 are being made, they should try and show what happened to those who lost their near and dear ones, how they coped up with life and what after-effects it had on the common man,” added the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP.

Minissha Lamba is the new face of Ever Yuth!

The very name of Minissha Lamba not just reflects beauty and grace, but also poise and magnetism. After having glorified the silver screen with her presence in Bollywood and after having launched a thousand products merely by saying 'cheese', the camera's favourite girl is now all set to add yet another product in her kitty of endorsements.

This time round, it's the cosmetic company Zydus Pharma who has signed her for their flagship brand 'EverYuth'. If the sources close to Bollywood Hungama are to be believed, then, the remuneration that Minissha has received is really something to rave about. The source also went onto add that Minissha was very particular about the TVC that was shot featuring her promoting the brand. Hence, she sat throughout the making of the ad, which, incidentally has come out really well.

All in all, Minissha has now more than one reason to smile about. After all, she is someone who can 'for-Ever' represent the 'Youth'. What say, Minissha!

De Dana Dan – Preview

Sunil A. Lulla,
New Delhi, After delivering comedies like “Hera Pheri” and “Phir Hera Pheri”, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal have teamed up once again in “De Dana Dan”, another laugh riot that releases Friday.

Expectations are high as Priyadarshan’s latest venture is being compared to the “Hera Pheri” films. Produced by Ganesh and Girish Jain and Sunil A. Lulla, it also stars Katrina Kaif, Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy.

” ‘De Dana Dan’ is not ‘Hera Pheri’. Sure the star cast is the same and so is the director, but there’s no effort to make a sequel to ‘Hera Pheri’ or be like ‘Hera Pheri’. But comparisons with ‘Hera Pheri’ are inevitable. ‘De Dana Dan’ is far more entertaining than any Akshay-Priyadarshan movies made in the past,” one of the producers was quoted as saying.

Shot mostly in Singapore, “De Dana Dan” is about Nitin Bankar (Akshay) who multi-tasks for a woman industrialist (Archana Puran Singh) – he is her butler, driver, watchman and gardener.

But Nitin desperately wants to become rich and to fulfil his dreams, he marries Anjali Kakkad (Katrina) who supports him financially.

Meanwhile, Nitin’s best friend Ram Mishra (Suneil) also comes to Singapore with big dreams but ends up being a courier delivery man. He falls in love with Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera) but her high society parents don’t approve of their marriage. They say Ram will have to rise up to their level to marry her.

In the midst of all this, Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal), a shrewd businessman who is looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors, decides to marry his son off to a rich girl. He comes to know about Manpreet and introduces himself as a well-established businessman to her parents.

Harbans manages to impress them and they agree to the alliance between Manpreet and Harbans’ son (Chunky Pandey).

With several factors working against them, Nitin and Ram reach a dead end in their relationships. They come up with a plan to kidnap a rich person and demand a ransom but the abduction plan spirals out of control and they have to hide in a hotel.

Manpreet’s wedding reception is being held at the same hotel. And soon they are joined by a motley of characters including a Chinese don, a hired assassin, a police inspector, a club dancer and a dead body.

Noteworthy is that “De Dana Dan” is Akshay and Katrina’s sixth outing together after movies like “Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye”, “Namastey London”, “Welcome”, “Singh Is Kinng” and “Blue”. The movie has also been in the news for a lovemaking scene between the two.

Priyadarshan and crew hope to bring back the comic punch on the big screen with “De Dana Dan”.

I’m not turning producer: Katrina Kaif

Mumbai, Katrina Kaif has denied reports of her turning producer with a remake of French film “A la folie…pas du tout” and said she is happy with the way her acting career is shaping up.

“I have no clue from where these rumours originate. It all seems to be coming out of thin air. There was never any indication by me in this regard,” Katrina told IANS.

There were reports that Katrina was playing a student in love with a married doctor in the remake of the French film “A la folie…pas du tout” (”He Loves Me…He Loves Me Not”). While she urges him to leave his pregnant wife, he doesn’t reciprocate accordingly.

“Well, sounds like an interesting story. However, any talk centred on the production of this film or any other movie for that matter is plain speculation,” the actress said.

Katrina lights up when the talk veers to the super success of “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”.

“Well, yes, we have got an amazing reaction for the film. Honestly, that was never really expected. Hence the way it has opened and sustained itself so well is pretty much a pleasant surprise,” said Katrina who teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor in the romantic comedy.

She is aware that now suddenly everybody feels that Katrina and Ranbir make the hottest on-screen pair and should be seen in more movies.

“Of course, if a good film comes in, I would love to do a film with Ranbir. However, I can’t just look at my co-star – I should have an amazing role, the script should be good and so should be the director. Even if one of these anchors fall down, the movie can’t be expected to fetch great results,” she said.

Katrina would be next seen in Priyadarshan’s “De Dana Dan” opposite Akshay Kumar that releases this Friday.

For someone who was written off six years ago after the release of “Boom” (2003), she has indeed come a long way with more than five hits in two years.

Does she get impacted by people’s adulation?

“Frankly, I take it all with a pinch of salt. One can never get too carried away in this industry because at the end of the day, it doesn’t achieve you anything at all. The best way is to look at the work you are doing and continue to make careful choices,” Katrina said.

Multiplexes killing Bollywood, say filmmakers

Panaji,Two prominent Bollywood filmmakers — Manmohan Shetty and Bobby Bedi — have spoken against multiplexes and the high price of tickets, saying these two factors could destroy the industry.

“The main culprit to bring down Bollywood are multiplexes,” said Shetty, who started the trend of multiplex cinema chains.

“The tickets are priced so high that people who used to watch the movies by paying Rs.30 to Rs.40 are not coming to cinema halls anymore,” Shetty said at a conference, “India – The Big Picture”, organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

“With high budgets and high priced tickets at multiplexes, film business has become difficult,” he added.

Shetty, who produced movies like “GangaaJal”, also said the fees charged by stars have made movie production a tricky business.

“Even though film producers spend Rs.10-15 crore on promotion of films, it is difficult to recover the amount,” he said, adding that a star like Akshay Kumar, who earlier used to charge Rs.1 crore now commands Rs.25 crore.

Film producer Bobby Bedi, in his address at the same conference that was organised on the occasion of the 40th edition of the International Film Festival of India, equated high priced tickets to the Frankenstein monster that would soon “eat us all up”.

“By pricing the tickets high, the industry has created a monster which will eat us all up like Frankenstein,” said Bedi, whose Kaleidoscope Entertainment has produced blockbusters like “Saathiya”, “Maqbool” and “Bandit Queen”.

“The need today is for us to lower the ticket prices and the cost of production,” he added.

“We shout from the rooftop about making 1,000 films in India every year. But only 84 films out of the 400 films are hits. What happens to the rest of the films and the money invested in them,” he asked.

Bedi also blamed the entry of corporate sector into film business for the unprecedented upswing in production costs and skyrocketing fees of stars.

“For ‘Mangal Pandey’, Aamir Khan was paid a princely sum of Rs.4 crore. In five years, the price could have a zero added to it,” he said.

“Corporates came into the film industry with pots of money. Now that they have made losses, they are exiting the market. Today, corporates are bleeding from the wounds they themselves inflicted.”

Why should 26/11 films be a problem: Vinod Khanna

ew Delhi, It is not insensitive of filmmakers to bring the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks alive on the big screen, says Bollywood veteran and politician Vinod Khanna who features in such a telefilm himself because it was a tribute to the victims.

“If at all films on 26/11 are being made, they should try and show what happened to those who lost their near and dear ones – how they coped up with life and what after-effects it had on the common man,” added the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP.

The telefilm starring Khanna is titled “Unn Hazaroon Ke Naam” and has multiple stories – each a personal tale of tragedy running parallel to each other. It will be aired Thursday on STAR Plus at 10 p.m. with a repeat telecast Sunday at 8 p.m.

Asked why he agreed to do it, Khanna said: “This project was for a cause – a tribute to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks. The production thought I was suitable for the role and I quite liked the project.

“I play a father whose son and daughter-in-law get shot at CST and how his grandson escapes the gunshot. The movie is about such people who lost their near and dear ones in the siege. It shows how many people were left traumatised after the incident and then how these people come in touch to face it and come to terms with it.”

The 63-year-old, who is currently shooting in Mahabaleshwar with Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Dimple Kapadia for the film “Dabang”, recalled his own whereabouts when 10 terrorists struck at key locations in India’s financial capital Nov 26 last year.

“I was at my house at that time. Usually I step out of my place around 10.30 p.m. but then I saw this whole thing happening and decided to stay in. I couldn’t imagine something like that could happen,” he said.

He lost three close friends in the attack. “Three of my close friends were killed. Another person I know got shot at but god willing, he survived,” added Khanna.

Khanna believes the terror attack and its extended duration was a “major intelligence failure”.

“The whole incident was a result of an assured lack of preparedness. It took so long to take decisions and implement them. But I believe now security is being given much-required focus. I have been reading a lot about the changes in the security system and I hope it works well,” he said.

A year after the dreadful incident, the actor says he treads the Mumbai streets without any fear.

“Mumbai always bounces back. The city has been through so much – bombs, riots, terror attacks. But the whole ethos of Mumbai lies in the very fact that life never stops here. There is no fear but always a concern – that’s why Mumbai always becomes a target all the time.”

A rift between Salman Khan and David Dhawan?

Over the years, Salman Khan and David Dhawan have been known as one of the most successful actor-director jodis in Bollywood. Together they have given hits such as Partner, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Biwi No 1 and Judwaa. However, some cracks have appeared in their relationship. Buzz is that Salman has refused to let producer Sajid Nadiadwala get David to direct the remake of the South film Kick, titled Sanki in Hindi, starring him in the main lead.

A source reveals, “Sajid has got the rights of the Telugu super hit Kick and has finalised Salman to star in it. Sajid spoke to David Dhawan to direct the film but when Salman heard that David was being considered, he flatly refused to be a part of Sajid’s film. He is not keen to work with David and wants somebody else to direct the remake.”

The source continues, “Salman is upset with David for several reasons. He really wanted Partner 2 to take off soon but there is no sign of the film from David’s end. On the contrary, David went ahead to direct Hook Ya Crook with John Abraham, who Salman can’t stand.” Sajid Nadiadwala says, “I acquired the rights of the film a month back. Salman will be playing the lead. I am still in the scripting process and have yet to finalise other details.” When asked if David will direct the remake, Sajid says, “I haven’t finalised anything. David is obviously the first name that comes to mind but I haven’t spoken to him as such.” When asked about Salman refusing to have David on board, Sajid says, “I don’t speak to Salman about my directors. It is untrue and purely a rumour. David and Salman are a winning jodi and have given so many hits together. David is a veteran director and it is in bad taste if someone says that they are having problems.”

David says, “Sajid hasn’t mentioned anything about directing any film.” When asked about Salman not wanting to work with him and wanting some other director instead, David says, “I haven’t even received a call from Sajid about this. It’s best if you speak to Sajid to get all the information.”

Nothing is wrong between Priyanka and me: Shahid Kapur

Mumbai: Every occupation comes with its share of hazards and showbiz is no exception. Shahid Kapur, whose love life has garnered more coverage in the press than his work, chooses to laugh about it.

"It's an occupational hazard and there is nobody who enjoys it but it comes with the profession. I am anyway a very private person. I prefer to ignore it or laugh about it."

The Shahid-Priyanka jodi heading for splitsville is making news everywhere including the fact that they did not interact with each other at a recent awards function. "Of course we met there. Who said that we haven't met? Anyway, I don't feel the need of justifying it. Everything is cool. Nothing is wrong between Priyanka and me," he said.

The next obvious question is whether he is single or not. He immediately replied, "That's a personal question."

Due to his lover boy image, his fan following consists mostly of girls. And now, he wants to go up the popularity chart amongst men too.

"Charlie's role in Kaminay was something that appealed to men. I am trying to do as many different roles as possible and if I am doing my roles properly I am sure I will be liked by men too. And yes, action films are something I am going to attempt especially after Kaminay because it appeals to men a lot. Also my next film Chance Pe Dance is about dance which again any man can identify with," he said.

Shahid considers himself lucky that the audience has accepted him with a big heart. "I didn't choose my first film from 100 films. On the contrary, I was rejected from many films before I bagged my first film. I am very satisfied with where I have reached today. I have learned immensely from my mistakes. But there is a great satisfaction in that journey. In five years, I am very fortunate to be where I am," he said.

Having actor parents, he always wanted to be an actor since his childhood.

"When I told my parents that I want to become a Hindi film hero, they reacted as any other normal parent would. They told me that 'of course, you can be an actor but whether a leading Hindi film hero or not, nobody can promise that'. It's really a big thing to be a Hindi film hero. I guess it's a matter of luck. Most people don't get to do what they love but I am doing what I really love at the end," he said.

Rahul Bose slams developed nations for climate change

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IANS) Bollywood actor-activist Rahul Bose has slammed developed countries for preaching to developing nations to reduce 'the use of energy sources' in order to cut down on 'greenhouse gases (GHG) and carbon emissions' without practising the same.

'Developed nations have enjoyed unbridled use of the fossil fuels to reach a level of prosperity that is ten times our level. Now, just when we are attaining the first levels of prosperity you want us to reduce our energy consumption?' Rahul posted on blog www.gogreen.bigadda.com Sunday.

'How are we going to build our schools, roads, hospitals, factories? How are we going to achieve the golden triangle of health, education and employment for all?'

'The developed world, led by the US and Canada have refused to do any of the above. In fact the US refused to even sign up on the Kyoto Protocol which agreed on emission cuts by developed countries. Canada, that had agreed to these cuts walked out of the Kyoto Protocol, calling for its death in a conference in Bangkok a few weeks ago. The entire developing world walked out. They too, will not budge,' he said.

The 42-year-old also slammed the regular meets to discuss the climate change without any positive outcome.

'... Approximately 200 countries on the planet have talked about the need to do something collectively about climate change (what used to be referred to as global warming) for the last 25 years, but have done nothing about it,' he said.

'25 years later, melted glaciers later, vanished lakes later, thousands of forest fires later, the world's leaders are still squabbling about what should be done about climate change,' he added.

The actor will be attending the 15th summit on climate change at Copenhagen Dec 6-18, as a global ambassador for British aid agency Oxfam.

I'll be there to guide any damsel in distress: Akshay Kumar

Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS) He worked with them when they were new to the film industry and gave back-to-back hits but Akshay Kumar refuses to take credit for Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra's success. The actor says he will always lend a helping hand to newcomers if they need it.

'I am extremely happy to be their (Katrina and Priyanka) mentors but then they are free agents. They owe nothing to any one. They got where they are because they are talented. I saw it in them and that's why I wanted to work with them. I am no guru,' Akshay told IANS in an interview.

'I don't make it a hobby to help heroines. I wait and I watch and I will of course be there to guide any damsel in distress. However, a 'Katrina' doesn't walk by a film set everyday. They are one in a million for a reason,' the star said.

Together, Akshay and Katrina have given super hits like 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Welcome'. While 'Namastey London' was also successful, their first film together 'Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye' was a decent box office grosser.

On the other hand Akshay has a cent percent success rate with Priyanka as well with hits like 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', 'Waqt - Race Against Time', 'Aitraaz' and 'Andaaz'.

The latest Akshay and Katrina starrer 'De Dana Dan' is now ready to hit the screens. The actress has time and again said that she consented to act in a film by Priyadarshan mainly due to Akshay.

'Yes, I know about that. 'De Dana Dan' isn't going to better her career. But yes, it is just good for her to work in different environments. A movie like this is a first for her. She still needs to touch every aspect of her audience and she knows it,' said Akshay.

'I know when Katrina says she's doing it for me, it means she respects me enough to say yes to something without question. There aren't any questions around the script etc... It's a plain and simple talk of 'Yes Akshay, when do you need me?'.'

Both Katrina and Priyanka have given hits with other actors too. In 2009, Priyanka teamed up with Shahid Kapoor in the successful dark thriller 'Kaminey'.

Katrina, on the other hand, was seen with John Abraham in 'New York'. Directed by Kabir Khan, the film was a huge hit. And recently she teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor in the successful romantic comedy 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani'.

But now she is back with Akshay in 'De Dana Dan'.

'In any case, the year wouldn't be complete without me chasing after her (Katrina) in one of my movies,' Akshay said jokingly.

Himesh carries forward Radio look in music reality show

As the theatrical release of Radio, his third film as a lead actor, approaches it's release, Himesh Reshammiya appears to be quite attached to the short hair look that he is sporting in the urban contemporary romantic tale. Buoyed by the response that he has fetched for the look that has been a gradual progression from his Aap Kaa Surroor and Karzzzz days, Himesh has now taken it forward into TV reality show as well.

The musical show is called 'Music Ka Maha Muqabla' which would be on air soon.

Says Himesh, "I have sported a casual look in Radio since it goes perfectly well with the role of VJ that I play in it. Since the response so far has been quite positive to it, I thought it would be a good idea to stick to it for TV as well."

His reasoning does make sense since this is also expected to aid the promotion of the film which is just a fortnight away.

Conceptualised by Gajendra Singh who has many successful TV shows to his credit ever since satellite channels came into being, 'Music Ka Maha Muqabla' has excited Himesh due to its concept and the treatment that has been designed.

"It's like a musical sport which is akin to one day cricket", he says, "There are 6 captains with each of them leading a team of contestants, all of whom perform for their respective captain and teams. I am sure the show will break all records in terms of TRPs."

Other than Himesh, the other 5 captains are Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, Mohit Chauhan, Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan.

There have also been murmurs in the trade circles that he has charged as much as Rs. 8 crores for participating in the show which requires shooting for only 20 days.

Refusing to comment on the remuneration of the show, Himesh is quite happy to discuss the economics of Radio instead. "I am very happy that the producer of Radio as already made a good profit. Moreover, the music is super hit as well. I will be a happier man though if people appreciate the film and my performance."

Starring Sonal Sehgal and Shenaz Treasurywala as the leading ladies, Radio is directed by Ishaan Trivedi releasing on 3rd December.

Exclusive look at Akshay-Katrina seductive rain song in De Dana Dan

When we talk about Bollywood rain songs, the very first song that comes to our minds is the famous 'Tip Tip Barsa Paani' from Mohra featuring Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon.

Well, Akshay seems to be all set to repeat history, this time around with Katrina in Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan.

The moment we got hold of the pictures from the song that will raise the bar of 'onscreen rainy seduction', we immediately thought of sharing it with you readers. What one wonders is that usually, such seductive numbers are always launched early to get maximum eyeballs but surprisingly, this song had been kept under wraps till now.

The song in question is 'Gale Lag Jaa' picturised on the onscreen lovebirds Akki and Katz! If our sources are to be believed, their chemistry is something that has never been 'exploited' before in any of their earlier films together.

With Akki and Kats already regarded as the hit jodi of Bollywood, it's no wonder that this song is bound to take them notches ahead, making them quite literally the 'hottest' jodi of Bollywood.

One has to admit that the very look of Katrina in this song immediately reminds one of Raveena Tandon in the Mohra song. While Viju Shah was the man behind the scintillating musical score of Mohra, Pritam Chakraborty has handled the baton of De Dana Dan.

What remains to be seen is: Will Akshay and Katrina be able to repeat the magic of Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye, Namastey London, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng with their most-anticipated De Dana Dan.

The source also added that the said product range is slightly different from other existing cosmetic products that are available in the market as they are based on the principle of "treatment with aroma" with constituents of distinct essential oils extracted from plants & flowers that help in rejuvenation and curing of skin and body.

The source also added that there could be a possibility of a TVC being shot with Karisma, whenever she has the dates for the same. Looking at the way the Kapoor sisters (Karisma and Kareena) are ruling the brand markets, it will be totally needless to say that, if at all there was as award for the Numero Uno Brand Endorser of the year, it will get split between these two.

Film Chance Pe Dance based on Shahid Kapoor’s life

New Delhi, (BollywoodWorld.com) Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor’s next project “Chance Pe Dance” has a slice of his own life as the film traces the journey of a struggler till he tastes success.

“Yes, there are many scenes in the movie that are similar to my life, but it’s not intentional, they have just turned out this way,” Shahid said in a press release.

The movie is based on a dancer’s life who enters a reality show after being rejected many times. Shahid, who plays the lead in the film, too had to give a lot of screen tests and auditions before he bagged the lead role in director Ken Ghosh’s 2003 movie “Ishq Vishk”.

According to a unit source, there’s another scene in the film where Shahid’s character is left with no option but to buy a second hand car due to his hardships, just like he had to in his own life.

Ghosh is directing “Chance Pe Dance”, and it also stars Genelia D’Souza. The film is being produced by UTV Motion Pictures and will release Jan 15 next year.

Paa is not a film about progeria: Abhishe

Bollywood star son Abhishek Bachchan, who plays father to real life dad Amitabh Bachchan in R Balakrishnan's upcoming movie Paa feels that it is a lifetime oppurtunity for him.

"This is a role of a lifetime. Very few actors get such an experience and opportunity... especially a son to play father to his own Paa . We are only and perhaps the first actor father-son duo to have played themselves in a role reversal," Abhishek told PTI in an interview.

He said that Paa , where Big B plays a 13-year-old boy suffering from progeria, a rare genetic disorder which accelerates ageing, is a simple, light hearted and happy film.

"Paa is not a film about progeria. It is a happy film about a father and his son and the sweet moments that they share," Abhishek said.

"The genetic disorder is just the unique backdrop of the film... just like 'Mili' where my mother (Jaya Bachchan) is suffering from a disease but the film was not about the illness," he said.

"There is a family in Kolkata where three children of a family suffer from progeria syndrome. But Balki did not want us to meet them and discuss their condition because it would have been very insensitive and intrusive," the Junior Bachchan said.

Indian Ocean to compose for Aamir Khan's next

Indian Ocean, the fusion music band, who touched a chord with its soulful rendition of Bandeh in director Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday, is all set to step into Bollywood once again by composing for Aamir Khan's next production venture.

"We are giving music in one of Aamir Khan production. I can't disclose the name of the movie but we are doing it," Rahul Ram, vocalist and bass guitarist of the band told PTI on the sidelines of the Frog Fest 2009.

The band, which has a huge following among the youth with hits like 'Kandisa', 'Bhor' and 'Jhini', is also working in another Hindi film, which star Seema Biswas, Shahana Goswami and Pawan Malhotra of 'Black Friday'.

"We are also giving music to 'Bhoomi', a film shot by Aveek Mukhopadhya who had assisted Rituparno Ghosh as a cinematographer," Ram added.

The band, which was formed in 1990, has been hailed for creating a cross-cultural blend of music by mixing jazz-spiced sounds, rock, shlokas and sufism with environmentalism, mythology and revolution.

The group, however, owes its rise to stardom to the immense popularity that they enjoy in college students.

"Most of our money comes from shows and live performances. No mainstream is going to ask us but we are doing new songs," said Ram.
