Through this film we strive to promote a kind of understanding of the issue.”<br /><br />“It deals with centuries of pain being inflicted upon certain parts of society and also the sudden pain that the other part of society feels which finds its opportunities curtailed,” he added.<br /><br />Veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of the protagonist ‘Prabhakar Anand’ in the film, said, “This is my first issue based film and it has been a great educational experience for me.”<br /><br />Upon query, Jha informed that the film which has been shot in Bhopal in just two months is scheduled to be released simultaneously in 1900 cinema halls throughout the nation on 12th August.<br /><br />He added to it by saying, “It was a very difficult film to make but it was an amazing experience to have made this film.”<br /><br />On being quizzed Amitabh stated that his personal views on reservation are echoed through the voice of his character in the film.<br /><br />He said, “I look at the issue from the viewpoint of the character in the film and like him I believe equal opportunity should be given to everyone.”<br /><br />“I have never been brought up in an environment taught me the differences in caste, creed, colour, race or religion,” he added.<br /><br />On being probed about the controversy the film has already raised among certain people of the society who claim it undermines the Dalit class of people, Jha assured that he has not done anything to anger any section of the society.<br /><br />He remarked, “When you do a film like this there are going to be many different viewpoints but believe me I will not do anything to infuriate any community or individual.”<br /><br />“This film was reviewed by the censor board and they have given a certificate without a single cut,” he added.<br /><br />Amitabh explained that while he plays the role of the principal still it is in no way comparable to the role of his in ‘Mohabattein’.<br /><br />“Mohabattein was about an event and this is an issue based film. Bollywood veers usually, and distressingly, between cautionary or cutesy, and is only now learning to tread a new path. `Bubble Gum’ gets it to the rights, with its life-like portrayal of a couple of small-town teenage brothers experiencing the first stirrings of young adulthood.<br /><br />There are several nice things about the film. The let-the kids-be-kids tenet is adhered to strictly : adults come in only when they need to. Vedant ( Lakhani) is an excitable fourteen-year-old, who is dealing, not very well, with the twin pressures of having a challenged older brother Vidur ( Hiravali), and the aches-and-pains first love brings. Jenny ( Arora) is the girl-next-door, and Vedant is well and truly smitten, but he’s not the only contender. Bad boy Ratan ( Singh) is a worthy rival, keeping a lusty eye on both Ved’s girl and Vidur’s stamp collection, as the gang looks on.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">To have urban kids hanging out in middle-class colony compounds minus gizmos is a near impossibility these days. But this film is set in the prehistoric pre-internet, pre-cellphone '80s when acquiring a shiny new bicycle held out the same happiness as an X Box can today. The location is Jamshedpur ( the second time it’s featured big in the last couple of years, after ‘Udaan’), so you get a mélange of accents ( Bihari, Bengali, and in between), not overdone, hurray. The characters look as if they belong to those houses, and live that life. During the British occupation of China, it was ‘dogs and Chinese’ while at the first Mumbai marathon the rule was against dogs and wheelchairs. A dog has thus become a metaphor for seclusion, for denying someone their fundamental rights.<br /><br />“Chillar Party” uses this metaphor in a brilliant, but hilariously entertainment manner to make a statement against those who seclude, be it Shiv Sena in Mumbai, fanatic Hindus who want Muslims out of India, or upper class Hindus who refuse lower caste people basic rights etc. That it does so while making you laugh, is its greatest strength.<br /><br />After a street kid Phatka (Irrfan Khan) and his stray dog Bhidu begin cleaning cars in a rich locality, the rich, school going kids first try to fend him off, but later become great buddies. When a minister offended by the dog passes a law to ban all street dogs from Mumbai, the kids resort to some unconventional activism to save their beloved dog. But is it even possible for the powerless kids to take on a high and mighty minister?<br /><br />“Chillar Party”, in essence, is a children’s film. But those who can read between the lines and see between pictures know that the most brilliant, imaginative and metaphorical literature and cinema in the world, are for kids.<br /><br />Thus in literature you have your ‘The Prince’ and ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, while the films of Iranian auteurs, though simple and innocent, attack an unjust system. “Chillar Party” is a welcome addition to these greats of world cinema.<br /><br />Yet, what does a children’s film need to be good? A simple story, good metaphor, oodles of cuteness and innocence, fun and humour and a band of actors to carry it all off. If you have these, any other drawbacks can be excused. “Chillar Party” has these and much more.<br /><br />The film is filled with observations and idiosyncrasies that will leave you laughing your guts out. Every child in the film has acted with such restrained understatement that they give your popular stars a run for their money. And yet, beyond all these beautifully working elements, it is the metaphor of the dog that takes the cake.<br /><br />Unlike nature, the world of humans is full of seclusion. Thus a Bal Thackeray in the 1960s wants the South Indians, in the 1990s the Muslims, and now the North Indians out of Mumbai. Fanatic Hindus want Muslims out of India. The Americans wanted blacks out of America. The Australians want Indians out. The Sri Lankans want the Tamils out. The list is literally endless. But as the film so valiantly, sincerely and emotionally argues, what is needed is inclusion.<br /><br />“Chillar Party is filled with allegorical moments that hint at how the poor, the disenfranchised, the adivasi, the handicapped, the minority survive. When the rich kids take away his cleaning cloth, Phatka has no qualms about washing cars with his only tshirt. The rich consider poor to be pests and want them out, but the poor strive and ironically serve the same rich. Some, pushed to the edge, take up arms against mighty odds, like in the tribal belts of India.<br /><br />Besides saluting the creative genius of writer-director Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari, one has to bow to UTV and Salman Khan, for flexing their muscles for something so beautiful.<br /><br />“Chiller Party” may be a small film. But as cinema goes, in its adroitness, it is much more mature than 99 percent of the films ever made in India. With “Haunted” and “Murder 2″ also raking in the moolah, these movies have shown how to make money despite having a restricted audience.<br /><br />“The reason we are seeing A-movies becoming hits is because people are experimenting a lot with the subject. Gone are the days of happy family with Ram Rajya-type subjects. Just to get out of the family drama zone, Bollywood is experimenting with subjects, language and characters,” director Rahul Dholakia told IANS.<br /><br />Dholakia, known for making movies like “Parzania” (2005) and “Lamhaa: The Untold Story of Kashmir” (2010), which were released with A-certificates, is penning down a courtroom drama, “Kanoon”, which has a close reference to the 2007 Nandigram incident in West Bengal.<br /><br />He believes the audience was always ready to accept strong and bold concepts, but producers and directors shied away.<br /><br />“We always watched such things, but it’s just that we never really told such stories through our cinema. There were films by Mahesh Bhatt which had strong and bold concepts like ‘Saaransh’ (1984) and the movie was well received by the audience.<br /><br />” ‘Nirmaan’ (1974), directed by Ravi Tandon, was another example of strong and real subjects. Though the movie received an average business, the plot is revisited now,” he added.<br /><br />In the past few years, things have changed and filmmakers have become bold storytellers and A-movies are setting cash registers ringing.<br /><br />“Delhi Belly”, an adult comedy produced by Aamir Khan, has broken the dry spell at the box office by earning Rs.15.65 crore on its first two days and Mohit Suri’s crime thriller “Murder 2″ earned Rs.34.9 crore net in the first week.<br /><br />Earlier this year Raj Kumar Gupta’s “No One Killed Jessica”, which makes heavy use of abuses, was given an A-certificate, but it created a box-office record.<br /><br />Anurag Kashyap’s “Shaitan”, about the dark side of the life of Mumbai youngsters, and Ekta Kapoor’s horror flick “Ragini MMS” received critical acclaim and did decent business at the box office.<br /><br />Gupta said the times have changed and so have viewer perspectives.<br /><br />“Bollywood films that include reality, violence and the dark side of life have caused a stir. The film industry is also trying hard to shed its traditionally conservative image and develop a new Bollywood which is full of experimentation,” said Gupta.<br /><br />Film critic Taran Adarsh feels a new Bollywood is coming out and said: “Now the whole concept has changed. I am not denying that masala movies have taken a back seat, but other films are also doing very well. ‘Delhi Belly’ is a shining example. We have a broader outlook towards everything; so we are automatically experimenting.”<br /><br />Mainstream cinema has moved into the ‘adult’ territory nowadays with acclaimed actors like Aamir Khan and Naseeruddin Shah, who acted in “Ishqiya”, jumping into the A bandwagon without any hitch.<br /><br />Dholakia feels Sharmila Tagore, the ex-chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and Vinayak Azad, the regional director of CBFC, played a big role in changing the trend.<br /><br />“Full credit should be given to two people for this change in Bollywood – one is Sharmila Tagore and the second is Vinayak Azad. They are the ones who made a revolutionary change in cinema in the last five years. He reveals that it was friends who supported him during the painful time when his illustrious parents, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, divorced around 25 years ago.<br /><br />He started his movie-making career by telling the story of three friends, “Dil Chahta Hai”, then he made his acting debut with another buddy story “Rock On”, and now his latest film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” is again about bonding and camaraderie among three men. It is directed by his sister Zoya.<br /><br />“I have always found this relationship of friends very beautiful. It made a lot of sense to me when Zoya told me that during our growing up years, friends played a very important part for us,” Farhan told IANS over phone from Mumbai.<br /><br />“Given the fact that my parents were going through a divorce, friends became a huge part of our support system and eased a whole lot of pain for us,” added the 37-year-old actor.<br /><br />After his separation from child actress-turned-screenwriter Honey Irani, Farhan’s dad, writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984.<br /><br />Of course, Farhan has moved on since those days, but what lives with him is the love of his friends, who have been with him since his school days.<br /><br />“I had some amazing best friends in school and that is one relationship where you can just pick and start off from wherever you left last, without thinking much. Ritesh (Sidhwani) has been with me since school, and he understands me very well. Friendship, once formed, lasts for ever,” he said.<br /><br />His latest release “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” sees Farhan’s character indulging in a lot of “bromance” with co-stars Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol.<br /><br />At the outset, the film highlights how people must let go of themselves to conquer their fears. But parts of it also hint at how, beyond the adventures, fun moments, and naughtiness that boys share, they don’t mind disclosing their emotional and vulnerable side to their best buddies.<br /><br />The movie, which released Friday, has been receiving praise galore and has managed to earn Rs.28.60 crore in the opening weekend. Farhan is “very happy and excited” about the way the movie has been received.<br /><br />“Not that people have been calling me directly in bulk, but I have been hearing a lot of praise through my mom, my dad and Shabana (Azmi). People across ages have watched the film and loved it…perhaps because whether you are 19 or 90, friends and friendship is something you would always identify with,” he said.<br /><br />Farhan is at his versatile best in “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” – he sings, dances and also shows his acting prowess in comic as well as serious scenes. He didn’t miss out on daredevilry as he indulged in deep sea diving, skydiving and a bull run for the film.<br /><br />Even as he pushed his limits to perform these adventures, there isn’t any sport that Farhan is fearful of in real life. But there is one thing he is really scared of.<br /><br />“It’s silly…but I have a certain childhood fear of a certain creature…cockroaches. I can’t stand them. Others can take longer. This one would be hard to define. And to try to slot it or give it shape in any other form but the visual would take some doing.<br /><br />The witticism, of course, flows. With Farhan Akhtar around, what else can we expect? But the spoken lines (a brilliant fusion of the colloquial and existential) are so doggedly wedded to the visuals that we come away with a complete and satisfying cinematic experience, so replete with life’s most luscious home-truths that we want to carry the plot’s bumper-sticker wisdom in our hearts forever.<br /><br />Farhan Akhtar did it ten years ago, in “Dil Chahta Hai”. He got three friends on the threshold of a career on a road-trip and let them come to terms with their own weaknesses and insecurities, even as Farhan, that wily filmmaker, discovered his own strengths as a storyteller.<br /><br />Now it’s Farhan’s sister Zoya Akhtar’s turn to take that road trip. Some day we need to figure out the Akhtar siblings’ affinity to films about three male friends on a journey to self-discovery. Suffice it to say that “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (ZNMD) takes the theme of male bonding to a more illuminating plane than “Dil Chahta Hai”.<br /><br />As the workaholic money-obsessed stockbroker (Hrithik Roshan), the happy-go-looking-for-his-dad prankster (Farhan Akhtar) and the about-to-be-married-nice-guy (Abhay Deol) set out on trip through locationally lush Spain (ummm, full marks for seductive eyecandy visuals) we follow right behind.<br /><br />Without trying to set up dramatic road-blocks and U-turns in the road journey, Zoya Akhtar gets us so involved in the drama and adventure of the threesome we gradually forget the actors and see only the characters that they so fluently and robustly play.<br /><br />Oh yes, the ladies take the backseat. Nonetheless Katrina Kaif’s Laila, a gorgeous diving instructor who teaches Hrithik to dive into soul, makes such graceful space for herself among the boys that we wonder how she managed to make herself heard in a film that celebrates the spirit of male bonding in all its robust colour splendour and noise.<br /><br />Oh yes, we forgot! This guys’ film is directed by a woman! The feminine touch is nowhere evident in Zoya Akhtar’s direction. She leaves you wondering if delicacy femininity and the opposite of a snobbish misogyny that our desi female directors have been seen to follow, vanished while we were not looking.<br /><br />ZNMD is a coming-of- age film on many levels. It celebrates the sheer beauty and physicality of location and their deep connection to the characters’ state of mind, without apology or explanation. Trust me. I looked. I couldn’t spot even one unpleasant face or topogrphy in the entire length and breath of this beautiful film.<br /><br />Yes, the surface is lovely. But so is the soul. Zoya, God bless her aesthetics, sucks us into the beauty of the moment, not giving us any reason to believe that life’s most precious truths are swathed in squalor. ZNMD celebrates splendour. Underwater or up in the air thousands of feet above sea level, the moments of tenderness are not stapled into the climate of camaraderie. They just happen.<br /><br />The moment when Hrithik discovers love under the stars with Katrina, or when Farhan Akhtar finally meets his biological father (Naseeruddin Shah, in a naturally compelling cameo) or that breathtakingly blistered moment of reckoning when after a bout of male backslapping in the initial episodes, we suddenly realize the cause for friction in the Hrithik-Farhan friendship… These are masterstrokes of muted drama not written in to impress, but simply as an integral part of that journey which we undertake so enthusiastically and willingly with the threesome.<br /><br />Technically the film wears its art on its sleeve. Carlos Catalan’s cinematography captures the pain and the fun in Spain without letting the touristic urge take over. Yeah, the film looks fetching. But not at the cost of the characters’ search for bearings in a world that mocks at the beauty of Nature. Editor Anand Subaya doesn’t cut the film. He carves the material in shapes that a jeweller would probably like to imitate if he only knew how.<br /><br />Every actor seems to the character born. Hrithik’s stuffed-shirt act would have been almost self-parodic were it not so sincere. Abhay Deol is a natural-born reactor. But it’s Farhan Akhtar who steals the best role, lines and moments. He is in his element and the character that evolves in the course of the journey. Oh yes, he gets to mouth his father Javed Akhtar’s evocative poetry.<br /><br />Katrina Kaif’s Laila is a kind of synthesis of mystique and sincerity that we had seen long ago in Leela Naidu. This film marks the coming-of-age of the Kaif. Kalki in a relatively brief role brings a kind of snide cuteness to the proceedings. Her character is sometimes the brunt of ridicule. She takes it in her stride.<br /><br />Every major character at some point, appears ridiculous. In fact, the actors of the film, including the principal cast, have already dubbed their lines for the TV version of the film.<br /><br />“That's true. You can keep a check on audiences when they visit theatres. But can you hold back kids from watching a film when it's aired on TV? That's why we decided to go easy on the dialogue of the film and get them dubbed all over again,” said 'Delhi Belly' director Abhinay Deo.<br /><br />Incidentally, not many are aware that Aamir was keen on dubbing this Hinglish film in four Indian languages -- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bhojpuri. Since Rohit Shetty is the director of Bollywood's biggest franchise till date, 'Golmaal', there were no doubts whatsoever that it was time for payback. However, as it has turned out, even though rights of Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed laugh fest have been bought by the makers of 'Bol Bachchan', there would be an altogether different spin to the tale, hence ensuring that quite a few surprises would be in store for the viewers.<br /><br />“For 'Bol Bachchan', Rohit didn't want any controversies whatsoever”, said a source attached to the film.<br /><br />“For his 'Sunday', he had bought rights of the Telugu film 'Anukokunda Oka Roju'. Ditto for 'Singham' which is the remake of namesake Tamil film. This is the reason why even though only the basic thread of old 'Golmaal' has been picked for 'Bol Bachchan', he insisted with his producers that complete rights of 'Golmaal' were bought so that no one pointed a finger in his direction in future.”<br /><br />What must have played in Rohit's mind is his earlier film 'Golmaal Returns' for which he was accused of lifting the plot of an old film called 'Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar'. He was obviously hurt since there were barely any similarities.<br /><br />“Yes, for 'Bol Bachchan' too I could have gone ahead, made the film and then comfortably made an official statement that I was just inspired by 'Golmaal'. In any case almost entire screenplay has been changed here, just like it is the case with 'Singham' as well. However I wanted to stay away from controversies", says Rohit who is currently high on the success of 'Singham' and would begin shooting of 'Bol Bachchan' in August.<br /><br />This decision has come for support from Ajay as well who would be working in his eight successive film with Rohit.<br /><br />“Yes, we have bought the rights even though we have changed the film completely. People ask me whether I am playing Utpal Dutt and Abhishek has stepped into Amol Palekar in Bol Bachchan. But that doesn’t stop filmmakers from casting Genelia D’Souza and Riteish Deshmukh together. Now, the duo — who last shared screen space in Masti (2004) — will be back in Indra Kumar’s sequel, Masti 2.<br /><br />Confirms producer AshokThakeria: “Yes, we are going ahead with the Masti sequel. And the cast will remain largely unchanged, including Riteish and Genelia.” Thakeria contends that they are still working on the script. “But we should start in about six months,” he says.<br /><br />That’s not all. Apparently, Riteish and Genelia are also set to star in a yet-to-be-titled rom-com, produced by Tips and to be directed by newbie Mandeep Kumar. The film is set in north India. Apparently, the film will be shot in a start-to-finish schedule and releases in December. For the uninitiated, Riteish and Genelia made their debuts together in Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003).<br /><br />Recent rumours talked about the couple’s public display of affection at a recent awards function in Toronto, leading to buzz that they plan to tie the knot in 2012. There’s no marriage happening,” says Riteish, who’s busy with a couple of other sequels including Housefull 2 and Kya Super Kool Hain Hum. Subsequently the fad has come and gone — sometimes creating a buzz and sometimes not.<br /><br />But the recent trend of 3D films still in its nascent stage is giving filmmakers reason to strike gold at the box-office. Two years ago James Cameron's Avatar created storm at the ticket window in India and more recently Vikram Bhatt's 3D horror film Haunted also became a huge hit. Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's upcoming film, The Adventures of Tintin: the Secret of the Unicorn, will release in India a month ahead of its US release date. This year's Pirates of the Carribean - On Stranger Tides and Kung Fu Panda-2 both did well in 3D. Michael Bay's 3D action adventure Transformers: Dark of the Moon was also 3D. Then there is Titanic that will release in 3D (2012), Godzilla, Madagascar 3, Ice-Age: Continental Drift, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, The Dark Knight Rises and The Great Gatsby releasing in the coming months.<br /><br />Even Bollywood filmmakers are also gearing up to join the 3D race. Vikram Bhatt will make Raaz-3 and Dangerous Ishq, Shirish Kunder's Joker, Ram Gopal Varma's untitled next with Kangana Ranaut, Shekhar Kapoor's Paani in 3D. SRK's RA.One, though not shot in 3D is also in talks to be converted to the 3D format when it releases. Says Nandu Ahuja, senior vice president of the company distributing the film, "The BO collections for all the 3D movies released in the recent past are so phenomenal that we can't ignore the possibility of releasing RA.One in 3D. Agreed India is not equipped with enough 3D screens, but till Diwali I am sure more such screens will be added to the list. There are many digital players in the market and releasing the film in 3D means more collections."<br /><br />Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt feels that 3D is quite a challenge and had mentioned in an earlier interview, " Haunted 3D does not play on the gore aspects of a horror film. I wanted to go beyond the dead body jumping out of a morgue on a foggy night cliche. So making it a thrilling film — which kept the viewers on the edge — on 3D was my main challenge."<br /><br />Says trade analyst Komal Nahta, "Even if you have 30-40 odd 3D cinema screens in India, it should mean good business for the filmmakers. But the filmmaker should be sure of an additional experience for the viewer with 3D format. A lot of work needs to be done to help the audience retain their excitement for the format. Films should only be 3D if the content is 3D-worthy, otherwise the effort will look forced. But nobody can wish it away."<br /><br />It costs roughly ` 10 lakh to convert an existing 2D screen to a 3D, while building a separate 3D screen altogether can cost as much as ` 35 lakh, depending on the technology. City multiplex owners feels that investing in 3D equipped screens is a must. Says multiplex owner Ashok Purohit, "The SFX and technology required for the movie watching experience is not easy to get in India. Having said that, 3D films should be of shorter duration and my next plan of action is to install 3D screens as most Hollywood movies are released in 3D format these days." Agrees Ashish Saxena, CEO of a popular chain of multiplexes across India, "Earlier films were converted from 2D to 3D but now with demand growing Hindi films are being shot in 3D. Also the technical quality of films have improved and with better content, I don't see any reason why India can't get more such screens."<br /><br />Filmmakers are excited about the idea too. As filmmaker Karan Johar says, "I am so excited that the 3D technology is now available to filmmakers like myself. But Singham, aimed at those who like their cinema stirred and shaken in familiar and simple ways, is a rare cop-and-crook drama that carries little excess baggage.<br /><br />But for a stray over-the-top scene here or a corny piece of dialogue there, it wears the look of a lean, mean and smartly packaged entertainer. For one, Rohit Shetty’s nifty reworking of the 2010 Tamil hit of the same title nurses no pretences. It is an out-and-out potboiler. Unabashedly designed for easy digestion, Singham is none the worse for it. It is loud, overtly melodramatic, underlined by much heroic bluster and packed with a series of crackling confrontation scenes between an upright and very, very angry cop – the cornered lion of the title – and a power-crazed criminal who runs a slew of illicit businesses in the garb of respectability.<br /><br />It could quite easily have turned into yet another turgid turn-off. It is anything but. Singham is refreshingly crisp and utterly uncluttered all the way through to the bitter end. It does take a few minutes to warm up, but once it does, there’s no stopping Singham.<br /><br />An honest young policeman shoots himself in the head when he is falsely hauled up for corruption. The cop’s widow publicly accuses the local extortionist Jaikant Shirke (Prakash Raj, reprising the role he played in the Tamil original) of causing her husband's death. But, given the enormous clout the criminal and wannabe politician wields, he goes scot-free.<br /><br />Away from the city, in a small outpost on the Maharashtra-Goa border, another no-nonsense cop, Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn), is on a one-man mission. He is a friend in need, a willing do-gooder, a mediator between feuding villagers and the violent nemesis of all wrongdoers in town. He puts away his service revolver when he fights. His blows pack the punch of a tiger’s paw and his belt is a whiplash that serves to rub insult to injury when his prey is down and out.<br /><br />When Singham's path crosses that of the gang-lord, he wins the first round hands down. The humiliated baddie goes on the rampage. The cop is transferred to the city. Singham walks into the lair of the hunter, tides over a few initial hiccups, and then, egged on by his girlfriend (Kajal Agarwal), declares all-out war on the criminal and his evil empire. What’s the big deal? To be honest, Singham has little to offer by way of original ideas. In fact, the film makes repeated allusions to other cop films – Zanjeer, Dabangg and Ajay Devgn’s own Gangaajal. It revels in the clichés that have forever been a part and parcel of the genre. Yet, Yunus Sajawal’s screenplay and Shetty’s treatment manage to deliver many moments that catch you by surprise.<br /><br />Shetty plays up the epic quality of the good vs evil clash without letting go of the strong streak of humour that is the Golmaal director's obvious forte. Thoroughly entertaining and consistently watchable, Singham delivers more than your money’s worth. If a feral analogy could be applied to a film, Singham is like the roar of a lion, unsubtle, unambiguous and power-packed.<br /><br />The film draws much of its fizz from the outstanding central performances. It is difficult to imagine any other Mumbai actor lending quite the kind of conviction that Devgn does to the character of the teed-off lawman. Devgn’s eyes do the talking; the six-pack, mercifully, remains a footnote.<br /><br />Just as impressive is the mercurial Prakash Raj, who flips from menacing to comical and then back to menacing with such effortless aplomb that you can only sit back and marvel.<br /><br />But the real soul of Singham is provided by the slew of Marathi actors in the cast, who breathe life into even the most minor of characters. Especially worth a mention is Ashok Saraf as a cynical and ageing constable who decides to give redemption a final shot.<br /><br />Singham is an old-fashioned but rousing Hindi commercial film that pretty much restores one’s faith in this often-maligned brand of cinema. It has super-duper hit written all over it. The star, whose career spans almost two decades, slips into comic, action or drama roles with equal ease and élan. After a super successful 2010, Ajay is gearing up to hit the big screen with the kind of cinema he knows best – Action. His forthcoming, Rohit Shetty directed Singham is slated for release this coming Friday and he has not only taken on the role but has become the role. The lean frame has given way to six-pack abs, but his eyes still exude the same captivating intensity. The actor connected with BollySpice for a brief chat on playing Singham, working with his co-stars, those abs and more.<br /><br />In the film he plays Bajirao Singham, a no-nonsense tough cop. Known for his interesting and smart choice of movies, quiz him on what attracted him to this film and he replies with a smile, “The reason for me saying yes to any film is purely down to the script, my role and the director’s vision and the same is with Singham. I loved the script – it really pays homage to the classic Indian action film genre of the 70s which I have grown up watching and aspiring to be a part of, in some shape or form”.<br /><br />He is quick to add that though the film is a remake of a Tamil blockbuster, Rohit has excellently reinterpreted the film for the Hindi film audience. “He has taken the Tamil version and given it his own stamp. It pays respect to the original but definitely has Rohit’s perspective,” he clarifies adding that he is convinced that those that watch it will recognise that.<br /><br />Of course, this is not the first film Ajay and Rohit have done together. Along with sharing a passion for action, they’ve had a successful hat trick of comedy films with the Golmaal series. Talking about this actor-director camaraderie, he says, “I enjoy every genre of film, they all bring different experiences. As an actor I like to be versatile, so working with Rohit was great. He is such a great director and we have very similar ideas when it comes to movies and action, I want to do my own stunts and he agrees. It was an honor working with Rohit and as always look forward to starting our next project with him.”<br /><br />For someone who transforms into characters ranging from a Mafia kingpin to a love-struck white-collared executive, how does he convincingly pull off any role? “By literally becoming them! From my physical appearance – have you seen the moustache and the abs??! – right through to the thought-process of the character and their portrayal,” he explains.<br /><br />Shifting gears, talk veers towards co-star of the film, Kajal Agarwal an established South Indian actress who makes her Bollywood debut with Singham. Ruefully he admits to have not had a chance to watch any of his leading lady’s movies. But despite that, he is all praise for the actress. “Kajal is a very talented woman; it was great working with her everyone had a really good time. I have seen her in action now so can imagine that they must be good.”<br /><br />So did his other co-star veteran actor Prakash Raj, who was also part of the original offer any pieces of advice? “Prakash has many a word of wisdom for me, not all relevant to the film I may add (laughs) but no, he knew my stance on wanting my role to be unique to me so therefore he just let me get on with it.”<br /><br />In one of his earlier interviews, he confessed to wanting to become a stunt man if he had not been an actor. Coming from someone who started his career as an action hero, idolized for snazzy bike stunts we couldn’t have agreed more. Singham once again gives him a chance to indulge in high octane yet nerve-wrecking action sequences. He professes that though they don’t make him nervous, there is an adrenaline rush. “The possibility of getting hurt makes you completely aware of your surroundings and what is going on – the only nerve racking thing is if I am not concentrating, as the novice I could seriously hurt someone else. Furthermore, in all of our films all safety precautions are taken into account to ensure the delivery of the scenes is as safe and smooth as possible.”<br /><br />Post Ghajini, Ready and with Singham following suit, he acknowledges that directors and actors are increasingly being attracted to the trend of South Indian films being remade by Bollywood. “The South Indian Film Industry has some great film concepts and other filmmakers recognise this – it’s definitely a good place to take inspiration from”, he maintains. However, he also subsequently points out that it works the other way round too with South Indian industry also re-making Hindi films, “It’s definitely a symbiotic relationship we share,” he reasons adding that his very own debut Phool Aur Kante was also re-made into a South Indian film.<br /><br />When quizzed about his best action flick, he refuses to pick any one in particular stating there are too many choices.<br /><br />Another interesting fact about Ajay that you may not know is… “I don’t tend to watch many Bollywood films, especially my own.”<br /><br />Getting back to Singham he describes the film as entertaining and thrilling at the same time, “The film is a high-octane drama, with the traditional hero vs villain storyline, sprinkling of romance, lots of intense action sequences”. Tall, dark and handsome, he became the hero every regular Indian girl would fantasise about. And it was not just about his looks, but many of his performances has since been a powerhouse of potential that has helped him grow at every rung on the ladder to Bollywood success.<br /><br />Beginning his career in 1991 with Phool Aur Kaante, the audience woke up to a new addition to the basketful of existing Bollywood actors. He was a far cry from the chocolate heroes; he looked like the regular neighbourhood boy in his trademark disheveled hair and day-long stubble and didn't try very hard to meet the Bollywood stereotype of the knight-in-shining-armour. He did not shy away from playing characters with dominant shades of grey in them (in films like Company, Deewangee, Khakee, Kaal, Shikhar, London Dreams and Raajneeti). His presence on the screen has been towering and his smouldering eyes have channelised the inner angst that a lot of young adults have felt during the difficult times the country has had to grapple with, from time to time.<br /><br />After Phool Aur Kaante, Devgn went on to play the action hero in several of his subsequent films that included Sangram and Vijaypath. His image of the angry young man was further explored in films like Diljale and Naajayaz. Once again, the filmmakers utilised Devgn's trademark looks and his reputation as the big screen's angry young man to the hilt, capturing the emotions poured out by the characters he played against the establishment that often became the metaphor for corruption, discrimination, class distinction and widespread dishonesty. The same was also vividly palpable in his portrayal of a righteous and honest cop in Prakash Jha's Gangaajal. In his more recent film Raajneeti, once again directed by Prakash Jha, Devgn's portrayal of the angry, young face of the Dalit community is a stark account of the bitter reality of the still prevalent feudal system in India. The original angry young man on the big screen, Amitabh Bachchan had fanned this fire within the hearts of many a regular young Indian with his immortal character in Zanjeer way back in the 70's. This torch was then carried on ably by the likes of good actors like Nana Patekar and Sunny Deol.<br /><br />A stark contrast to that image is perhaps the one projected by the current crop of young actors like Imran Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, and it often seems unlikely that they could hide the dimples on their cheek and trade their trademark impish grins for that steely, resolute look in the eyes that those angry young men became famous for.<br /><br />With Singham, director Rohit Shetty is all set to pay tribute to the glorious era of Bollywood in the 70s. It is being said that the fight sequences in Devgn's upcoming release will be based on the action sequences in Zanjeer and Amar Akbar Anthony. It however, remains to be seen if Devgn who plays cop Bajirao Singham in the film is actually able to project the same haunting performance of the angry young man that films like Zanjeer became iconic for. Comedies like the Golmaal franchise and other romantic renditions delivered by the actor have established him as an all-round hero, but with Singham, he returns to his old love - the action genre. One can never age doing what he does best — I’ve just matured a bit. I’m very confident about my age and love the way life’s unfolding, post 40,” he states, simply.<br /><br />All set for the release of Singham, Ajay is glad that he’s got an action film to offer to the audience. “After years, I’ve got a hardcore action film and the fact that I started off with action obviously makes it close to my heart. But of course, I was waiting for the right opportunity — a strong script backed by stronger stunts,” he informs. So, after all these years, are Friday morning jitters still bothersome? “I wouldn’t call them jitters but I do feel anxious. Just as a lot of hard work goes into each film, a lot of expectations need to be met as well,” he explains. While Ajay appears to be someone not working under the pressures of expectations, he chooses to differ. “What’s the point of working if I can’t meet popular demands. This time, I just ate right and put in a few more hours. Of course, women swooning over me sounds wonderful,” he laughs. And Jacqueline Fernandez who has been built up in “Murder 2″ as the next Mallika Sherawat is nothing like the overrated Mallika….Thank God for that! Fernandez exudes an unbridled sunniness even when pouting in the bare minimum. Alas, she doesn’t have much to do in “Murder 2″ except swathe the dark drama in a spot of sunshine.<br /><br />God knows this film about the devil-unleashed, surprisingly written by a woman (Shagufta Rafique) needs that little of sunshine. It is a desperately dark film. The characters are wretchedly unhappy. No matter which side of the moral line they are positioned they are standing screaming into the abyss that is suburban life. These people need serious help.<br /><br />This then, is the world Mahesh Bhatt has bequeathed to us. Take it and bleed it.<br /><br />Director Mohit Suri who earlier took us on a jolting trip through the world of prostitution, pimps and desperate cops in “Kalyug” takes the same route again. On this occasion the journey is far more ruthless and rigorously implemented to create horror repugnance and hatred for a word that we’ve created for coming generations.<br /><br />In the typical Mahesh Bhatt style “Murder 2″ doesn’t waste time in back-projections and story build-up. He goes straight for the kill. With trenchant immediacy director Mohit Suri (back in “Kalyug” form after the misfire that was his last film “Crook”) tells us the story of a psychopathic killer who kills prostitutes with the pleasure that makes your stomach churn and look anxiously towards the future about your daughter who is just stepping into the big wide world.<br /><br />Who knows if the man sitting next to her in the movie theatre is a closet-nutcase with a collection of hacksaws in his house, and not to carve up the Christmas turkey.<br /><br />Prashant Narayanan as the psychopath plays the character at such an even pitch he makes your blood freeze in fear and revulsion. Here’s a man who could be that ghoul who butchered all those kids in the Nethra killings and then ate them up without a burp.<br /><br />The ‘hero’ in “Murder 2″ is a burn-out suspended cop who makes money out of criminals, stays sullen and haunted throughout the film except when he goes for the kiss, and offers his girlfriend a wad of notes after making love. To buy the fridge, he says. Naturally the lady freezes.<br /><br />Force of habit, we say. Hashmi has done this kind of a role repeatedly. The kissing and vigorous bedroom activities are quickly taken care of in the first 15 minutes. Wouldn’t want the lovers of the serial kisser to feel they’re being cheated in favour of the serial killer.<br /><br />The wacked-out killer in “Murder 2″ doesn’t eat his victims. He just cuts them down to sighs…and groans and shrieks of pain and records their dying voices to get his rockers off….<br /><br />The plot seems original. The narration is clenched and the characters driven by a desperate urge to assert themselves before death rings their doorbell.<br /><br />The savagery with which the college-going call girl (Sulagna Panigrahi) is brought to her gruesome death becomes a metaphor for the loss of innocence and the triumph of diabolism that is often garbed in designer labels these days.<br /><br />“Murder 2″ is not a pleasant film to view. The psychopath’s killings are done in graphic detail. The storytelling offers no respite from the brutality. Most of the time we are looking at happenings that we would rather not see. But see, we must.<br /><br />“Murder 2″ is a mirror of our amoral venomous times when no relationship is sacred anymore. Mohit Suri remains in command of the murky material and traumatized characters. While most episodes hold together in a riveting rhythm of life’s most unsavoury truths, the sequences featuring Prashant Naraynan work better than the rest of the film. Others can take longer. This one would be hard to define. And to try to slot it or give it shape in any other form but the visual would take some doing.<br /><br />The witticism, of course, flows. With Farhan Akhtar around, what else can we expect? But the spoken lines (a brilliant fusion of the colloquial and existential) are so doggedly wedded to the visuals that we come away with a complete and satisfying cinematic experience, so replete with life’s most luscious home-truths that we want to carry the plot’s bumper-sticker wisdom in our hearts forever.<br /><br />Farhan Akhtar did it ten years ago, in “Dil Chahta Hai”. He got three friends on the threshold of a career on a road-trip and let them come to terms with their own weaknesses and insecurities, even as Farhan, that wily filmmaker, discovered his own strengths as a storyteller.<br /><br />Now it’s Farhan’s sister Zoya Akhtar’s turn to take that road trip. Some day we need to figure out the Akhtar siblings’ affinity to films about three male friends on a journey to self-discovery. Suffice it to say that “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (ZNMD) takes the theme of male bonding to a more illuminating plane than “Dil Chahta Hai”.<br /><br />As the workaholic money-obsessed stockbroker (Hrithik Roshan), the happy-go-looking-for-his-dad prankster (Farhan Akhtar) and the about-to-be-married-nice-guy (Abhay Deol) set out on trip through locationally lush Spain (ummm, full marks for seductive eyecandy visuals) we follow right behind.<br /><br />Without trying to set up dramatic road-blocks and U-turns in the road journey, Zoya Akhtar gets us so involved in the drama and adventure of the threesome we gradually forget the actors and see only the characters that they so fluently and robustly play.<br /><br />Oh yes, the ladies take the backseat. Nonetheless Katrina Kaif’s Laila, a gorgeous diving instructor who teaches Hrithik to dive into soul, makes such graceful space for herself among the boys that we wonder how she managed to make herself heard in a film that celebrates the spirit of male bonding in all its robust colour splendour and noise.<br /><br />Oh yes, we forgot! This guys’ film is directed by a woman! The feminine touch is nowhere evident in Zoya Akhtar’s direction. She leaves you wondering if delicacy femininity and the opposite of a snobbish misogyny that our desi female directors have been seen to follow, vanished while we were not looking.<br /><br />ZNMD is a coming-of- age film on many levels. It celebrates the sheer beauty and physicality of location and their deep connection to the characters’ state of mind, without apology or explanation. Trust me. I looked. I couldn’t spot even one unpleasant face or topogrphy in the entire length and breath of this beautiful film.<br /><br />Yes, the surface is lovely. But so is the soul. Zoya, God bless her aesthetics, sucks us into the beauty of the moment, not giving us any reason to believe that life’s most precious truths are swathed in squalor. ZNMD celebrates splendour. Underwater or up in the air thousands of feet above sea level, the moments of tenderness are not stapled into the climate of camaraderie. They just happen.<br /><br />The moment when Hrithik discovers love under the stars with Katrina, or when Farhan Akhtar finally meets his biological father (Naseeruddin Shah, in a naturally compelling cameo) or that breathtakingly blistered moment of reckoning when after a bout of male backslapping in the initial episodes, we suddenly realize the cause for friction in the Hrithik-Farhan friendship… These are masterstrokes of muted drama not written in to impress, but simply as an integral part of that journey which we undertake so enthusiastically and willingly with the threesome.<br /><br />Technically the film wears its art on its sleeve. Carlos Catalan’s cinematography captures the pain and the fun in Spain without letting the touristic urge take over. Yeah, the film looks fetching. But not at the cost of the characters’ search for bearings in a world that mocks at the beauty of Nature. Editor Anand Subaya doesn’t cut the film. He carves the material in shapes that a jeweller would probably like to imitate if he only knew how.<br /><br />Every actor seems to the character born. Hrithik’s stuffed-shirt act would have been almost self-parodic were it not so sincere. Abhay Deol is a natural-born reactor. But it’s Farhan Akhtar who steals the best role, lines and moments. He is in his element and the character that evolves in the course of the journey. Oh yes, he gets to mouth his father Javed Akhtar’s evocative poetry.<br /><br />Katrina Kaif’s Laila is a kind of synthesis of mystique and sincerity that we had seen long ago in Leela Naidu. This film marks the coming-of-age of the Kaif. Kalki in a relatively brief role brings a kind of snide cuteness to the proceedings. Her character is sometimes the brunt of ridicule. She takes it in her stride.<br /><br />Every major character at some point, appears ridiculous. Like, I lost in politics because I was not capable, not because I was of a particular caste,” added Big B, who is a legend in the Hindi film industry with several hits like “Sholay” and “Deewar”.<br /><br />In “Aarakshan”, directed by Prakash Jha and releasing Aug 12, Amitabh will be seen as the principal of a private educational institution. Themed on caste-based reservations in educational institutions, “Aarakshan” revolves around Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh), an idealistic principal, and his loyal disciple Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan).<br /><br />Traditional Indian society is based on social hierarchy created by the caste system.<br /><br />But Amitabh said he never believed in the caste system because of his upbringing. “I never understood the caste system because I was born and brought up in a family and in an atmosphere that never ever preached caste or believed in it,” said Amitabh, eldest son of late Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan.<br /><br />“I feel very proud because I am the first bearer of a name that was started by my father which has no cast reference at all. My father, perhaps, was the very first individual in the city of Allahabad to have undergone an inter-caste marriage in those times.<br /><br />“He married a Sikh. He was a Kayasth from UP (Uttar Pradesh). When the question came about of my admission in school and the teachers asked what is the surname, my father said he didn’t want the surname to bear any kind of caste reflection and therefore his pen name became my surname.<br /><br />“So I’m very proud of the fact that I was the originator of the Bachchan name, which is casteless, if surnames are an indication of any kind of caste,” he added.<br /><br />Amitabh’s family boasts of secular credentials. While his father married a Sikh, he himself is married to a Bengali (Jaya Bachchan). His son (Abhishek Bachchan) is married to a Kannadiga (Aishwarya Rai) and his daughter (Shweta Nanda) has tied the knot with a Punjabi (Nikhil Nanda).<br /><br />When asked what could be done to break the caste barriers and change the situation in the country , he said: “Many attempts have been made… everywhere I have gone, where we have discussed this, we haven’t really come across a solution. It is something that we have inherited. Our social structure has been developed in this manner. We have to live with it. But I hope something can be done.”<br /><br />Speaking on the film “Aarakshan”, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Prateik Babbar and Manoj Bajpai in pivotal roles, Amitabh said director Jha helped him understand the subject quite a bit.<br /><br />“I wasn’t as conversant as perhaps Prakashji about the subject because I never paid attention to it and never thought about it because I don’t believe in it. But yes, the doors have opened. I was speaking to a few successful people in LA recently who told me, 'It's never been so good here for the Indians in show business and other spheres as well'.<br /><br />W<span style="font-weight: bold;">hat do you think is lacking in Bollywood?</span><br />Things are rapidly changing here. There are some exceptionally talented people here who are making a difference - Aamir Khan, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. These guys are constantly raising the bar. But having said that, I feel that we are still catering to Indian diaspora. They should go all out to get a global audience.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Do the inevitable comparisons of Bollywood and Hollywood in your mind disturb you?</span><br />That's a good question but no, I adjust quickly. My roots are here. I am what I am because of Bollywood. Shekhar Kapur keeps telling me that I should stop working in Indian films, but I'll never do that.<br /><br />At the end of the day, I am a very emotional person. I just continue being myself, a mainstream commercial hero from Indian cinema. Coming to your question, I have my share of conflicts but I don't voice them or take them negatively. To be honest, Hollywood too has its downside.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">How much has Hollywood changed you?</span><br />Personally, I am the same old Anil Kapoor. Professionally, it has opened several doors for me. For the first time in my 30-year-old career, I am getting offers from the US and Great Britain. And in the US, I am what I was 30 years ago in India. It's like I am starting all over again.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Did it hurt not being a part of the promotional campaign of MI4?</span><br />(Smiles) I am ecstatic that I am not in the promos of MI 4. No expectations from me in India now (smiles). Frankly, I would fly down for Tom Cruise and J J Abraham even if they want only one shot with me. Above all, I can't say 'No' to my son. While veterans like Asrani and Shakti Kapoor have done it in the past, this time actresses Raveena Tandon and Monica Bedi have jumped into the jatra bandwagon.<br /><br />Tandon will play the lead role in Roop Sagarer Roopasi " (Beauty of the Beautiful Sea). Directed by Kanak Bhattacharya, the show is expected to be a big draw this festive season. The promos are already creating a flutter among the masses who love jatra.<br /><br />"Yes, we have signed her (Tandon) for our show. She will play the lead. An actress of her repute will be seen for the first time in Bengali jatra that has mass audiences, particularly in small towns. She was very excited about the offer and we too are. The response has also been tremendous after we came up with the advertisement in newspapers," said Bhattacharya.<br /><br />The actress, who had won the National Award for her performance in Kalpana Lajmi's "Daman", made her Bengali debut in Raja Sen's "Laboratory", based on a story by Rabindranath Tagore.<br /><br />Bhattacharya added: "For long we have been looking for Bollywood stars but couldn't get them because of some problems. But this time we are very fortunate to have her. She was the first name we had thought of and it has worked out well."<br /><br />Bengali jatra, which still continues to be a rich source of entertainment, particularly among the rural masses, is all geared up for the festive season. Play rehearsals have begun in right earnest.<br /><br />Jatra is West Bengal's traditional folk theatre form and is very popular in rural areas. It combines acting, songs, music and dance and is performed by troupes that travel from one place to another. Stylised delivery, exaggerated gestures and high decibel oratory are some salient features of the jatra.<br /><br />In some ways, it has the flavour of Bollywood many times over.<br /><br />Hindi movie starlet Monica Bedi, known more for her association with underworld don Abu Salem than her acting skills, too will be seen in a jatra titled "Chirodiner Sathi" (Companions Forever).<br /><br />"Jatra lovers want to see fresh faces and prefer Bollywood artistes. We have earlier worked actors like Shakti Kapoor and Asrani. We heard that she was interested in doing jatra. We approached her and she readily accepted," says Ramen Palit, one of the producers.<br /><br />Palit also added that language will not be a problem. "Earlier, Asrani or Shakti Kapoor acted in Hindi only. Likewise, she too will act in Hindi with one or two dialogues in Bengali."<br /><br />Following her release from jail, Bedi is trying to make a career in showbiz, after trying her hand in some reality shows on television.<br /><br />The audiences, meanwhile, are lapping up the trend.<br /><br />"I am a great fan of Ravina. I don't know how many times I have watched her "Tu cheez badi hai mast mast" dance. It's great that I can now see her before my eyes," said Chanchal Das , a shopkeeper in Panchla in Howrah district.<br /><br />"Monica Bedi was known for her oomph factor for some time. He had not only recorded the promotional videos of his film in five Indian languages but also had special interactions on websites like Twitter and blogs, where he has a strong following. Delhi Belly today opened across 1,200 screens as against BHTB that opened in nearly 1,000 screens.<br /><br />Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted his release day verdict, “Delhi Belly takes a big lead. Multiplexes in major centres have reported 70-90 per cent occupancy while single screens have recorded 50-60 per cent occupancy. Youth seem to be endorsing the film.”<br /><br />Bachchan’s home production has reportedly invested Rs 10 crore in BHTB, while Khan’s production has said to have budgeted its film at Rs 35 crore. “Delhi Belly has had a terrific start compared to Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap. Occupancies are around 70-80 per cent for Delhi Belly,” listed a senior multiplex official. So while wife Kiran will direct the film, Aamir’s sister Nuzhat (Imran Khan’s mother) will contribute to the script and so will cousin Mansoor Khan.<br /><br />What’s interesting is that Aamir has managed to get the reticent Mansoor back into the business of making films. Mansoor has earlier helmed blockbusters like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and Akele Hum Akele Tum, but took a hiatus from Bollywood to lead a reclusive life on his farm in Ooty. He returned in a producer’s capacity for Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.<br /><br />Says Aamir of the Khan’s magnum opus, “We’ve managed to get him on board as a director as he doesn’t want to return to direction. We want Mansoor back, making films, but he is happy where he is, in Ooty.”<br /><br />Confirming the entire family’s involvement in the project, Aamir added, “This film will be a mainstream one”. However, the cast hasn’t been decided as yet. “It’s at a very nascent stage,” Aamir admits. “We have not yet decided who will star in it. We are hoping that the script turns out well first, and in any case, we can focus on it only once Delhi Belly releases. I applied twice, but did not get. Then I went to Mumbai with only Rs 300 in my pocket," says noted Bollywood director Prakash Jha Three decades later and the wish to enter Parliament still burning bright, the producer-director-screen writer contested from his native West Champaran in 2004 and 2009 general elections, but failed to beat the Nitish Kumar wave both times.<br /><br />Interacting with scribes, the maker of such fine films as 'Gangaajal' and 'Apaharan' said he had no penchant to be in active politics now.<br /><br />"I have never been in active politics. Delhi Belly is a raunchy, witty and irreverent film that is bound to please all but the most straitlaced audiences. I haven't had this much fun at the movies in a long time.<br /><br />Newbie Akshat Varma’s script is hilarious and bitingly perceptive.Delhi Belly is perhaps the first Hindi film not just to understand potty humour as a pop cultural form, but to play it like a maestro pianist. You can’t help but grab your stomach and guffaw as the bumbling trio of Tashi (Khan), Arun (Das) and Nitin (Roy Kapoor) stumble through a landscape defined by stolen diamonds, botched up shootings, dumb sexism and gleeful disrespect of the commode. What works here is that these characters are very real — they bicker and blunder like idiots but not like movie characters, and they toss snappy one-liners the way you and I slough off dead skin-cells.<br /><br />For most of its short 90-minute runtime, Delhi Belly is sly and darkly humorous, and the postmodern satire playfully deconstructs most Bollywood genres and cliches. I'm aware that the use of Bollywood is an easy target in today’s movies, but the intentionally crude dialog and the plot move quickly and humorously enough to make me believe that the film is smarter than it is lazy. Rather than A-list stars, sophomore Deo directs relatively unpopular actors, and gives them a new chance to shine. Moreover, he has taken Shehnaz Treasury, an actress who killed our brain-cells in films like Radio, and actually made her likable in her brief cameo.<br /><br />Here we have three youngsters — an unseasoned reporter Tashi, a meek cartoonist Arun and an unkempt photographer Nitin — slumming it at a rundown Delhi apartment. A particularly nasty day begins as Tashi’s fiancé (Treasury) decides to hitch him, Arun’s girlfriend dumps him and Nitin’s appetite begins to overpower him. Enter new colleague Menaka (Jagannath), followed by an unhygienic piece of Tandoori chicken, and all hell breaks loose. The excrement finally hits the ceiling when Nitin’s stool sample gets mixed up with a Russian doll containing diamonds, much to the annoyance of smuggler Somayajulu ( Raaz).<br /><br />But never mind the story. It doesn’t have layer upon layer of intrigue, and except for the blackmail subplot involving Nitin and a prostitute, Delhi Belly could have been a short story published in an adult version of Tinkle. It's fun, but that's not the point. The point is how screwy it all is, with Deo playing with the rules of Hindi movies. As for the dialogue, I won't repeat any of the uproarious lines that pass between the characters, in part because they often feature ferocious swear words, but also because they'll be funnier if you discover them yourself. Rest assured, the jokes are about as lowbrow and raunchy as any filmmaker in India will ever get with an ‘A’ rating.<br /><br />It's not high art, nor is Delhi Belly even close to the pinnacle of originality, but it is a jolly good time nonetheless. The running gag of Nitin’s protesting stomach reigns smack down in the middle of the plot, and miraculously it never comes across as tawdry. Vijay Raaz seems have a whole lot of fun as a gangster — it’s clearly the best thing he has ever done.Kunaal Roy Kapoor does well as the typical ‘fat guy with flatulence issues’; Vir Das is quite likable as well. Imran Khan sans the irritating chocolate boy look is surprisingly good here. The trio’s English delivery is mostly convincing.<br /><br />What works best in the film is the subtle, smooth nature of the comedy — the actors don’t try too hard, nor do they make stupid faces to extort laughs from you. Another big positive is the restrained use of music — unlike in Rohit Shetty and Sajid Khan products — there are no loud, annoying musical cues that accompany every joke.Deo directs with a zippy pace and clarity. The only problem is that the Delhi Belly is overtly calculated, and the songs, though gorgeously relegated to the background, are mercilessly sliced and diced. Hat tip to producer Aamir Khan for shepherding a zany, truly cheeky jet black comedy for adults in an industry that generally delivers stuff like Ready and Tees Maar Khan.
