Why is Vipul Shah guarding look of ‘Action Replay’?

Aishwarya Rai Akshay Kumar Action Replay 200x209Mumbai, Director Vipul Shah has a secret. It is the look of his Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai starrer time-travel caper “Action Replay”.

“We, Akshay’s designer Shabina Khan, Aishwarya’s designer Manish Malhotra and all of us have worked really, really hard to give ‘Action Replay’ a unique look. If that look is leaked out, we’d lose our biggest USP,” Shah told IANS.

“We’re taking stringent steps to ensure the confidentiality of our look.”

Shah takes serious umbrage to the suggestion that the retro look in his film is similar to “Om Shanti Om”.

“We haven’t copied anything from the films of the 1970s (as ‘Om Shanti Om’ has). If we would have got into that 35 mm space, we’d have ended up copying only Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan’s clothes and style.

“Akshay insisted we do more authentic research. We dug into archival material on the clothes, mannerisms and people of the 1970s,” he said.

“Since we haven’t copied our 1970s look from Hindi films, Akshay and Aishwarya sat down to look at real life footage from the decade to get the look right. They specially looked at television footage of live cricket matches in the 1970s.

“Akshay was busy peering at the pavilion of spectators, what they wore, how they spoke moved their body language. That’s how he conceived his character in the seventies. That’s where Paul Pattison’s wig came in.”

And what does he have to say to “Action Replay” being compared with “Back To The Future”?

“Well earlier my film was supposed to be ‘The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button’. Now that accusation has been wrongly passed on to another film (‘Paa’). Now I’m supposed to have copied ‘Back To The Future’. Again, untrue. If anything, all time-travel films including mine are inspired by H.G. Wells’ ‘Time Machine’.”

On the sets of “Action Replay”, Akshay’s retro-wig, which he wears for his 1970s look, is his most prized possession.

Apparently the wig designed by one of Hollywood’s biggest makeup artistes Paul Pattison, who worked for films like “Braveheart” and “Mission Impossible 2″, made Akshay paranoid. He was petrified of losing it.

There are 400 other wigs all done under Pattison’s supervision for junior artistes posing as people in the 1970s.

“We were very particular about the 1970s look recreated at the Nitin Chandrakant Desai’s studio in Karjat. We needed the cars from the 70s which we had to get from all over India from private owners at a very heavy price.

“The BEST buses in the 1970s were very different from their counterparts today. Getting authentic BEST buses from the seventies was the hardest part of the whole era-recreation. Getting Akshay and Aishwarya to go retro was the easiest thing. They had a ball getting into their wigs, clothes and body language,” said Shah.

Sena mobs attack theatres ahead of ‘My Name Is Khan’ release

Mumbai, Shiv Sena activists Tuesday went on a rampage and attacked several cinema halls that will screen Shah Rukh Khan’s “My Name Is Khan” despite the Mumbai Police assuring full security at the 63 cinemas and multiplexes that will showcase the movie.

Sena mobs attacked and damaged the booking windows of the Mehul Theatre in Mulund and staged noisy protests outside Shreyas Theatre in Ghatkopar, both in the suburbs, officials said.

Similarly, activists shouted slogans against Shah Rukh and “My Name Is Khan” outside the Huma Cinema in Kanjurmarg and the R-City Mall even as police promised tough measures to prevent any untoward incident during the release of the film directed by Karan Johar and starring Kajol with Shah Rukh Khan.

“My Name Is Khan” has been under the Shiv Sena scanner ever since superstar Shah Rukh made comments in favour of the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shah Rukh is co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders team. Not willing to settle for anything less than an apology from the star for his pro-Pakistani cricketers comments, the Sena also called him “a traitor”.

During the ongoing protests, posters and banners of the movie were torn or defaced and effigies of ‘King Khan’ were burnt in various parts of the state. Sena members also tore the screen in Metro Cinema in south Mumbai late Tuesday evening.

Acting swiftly, police arrested at least 40 Sena activists and booked them for unlawful assembly and rioting.

Earlier in the afternoon, director Karan Johar had called on Police Commissioner D. Shivanandhan and returned satisfied by the police security promised for the movie.

Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu Roy said anybody attempting to disrupt the film in any manner would be dealt with “very firmly”.

“We shall also frisk and search suspicious persons coming to view the movie to prevent any untoward incidents inside the cinema auditorium,” Roy told a packed news conference.

“We came here with the exhibitors to get a personal assurance from the police. We have an assurance from him that we shall be provided full protection at all places and locations where the movie shall be exhibited. There is no issue and it’s all fine,” Johar told reporters after the meeting.

Johar added that advance bookings for “My Name Is Khan” have already opened all over ahead of the scheduled release Friday.

The Sena violence came only days after the party unofficially dissociated itself from banning the movie release in the city.

However, on Tuesday, senior party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi reiterated in Nagpur that Shah Rukh must apologise for his remarks advocating the cause of Pakistani cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League.

His much awaited film is slated for a global release this Friday, including at 63 cinemas and multiplexes in Mumbai and another 250 across the state.

Both Chief minister Ashok Chavan and state Home Minister R.R. Patil have assured full protection for the smooth screening of the movie across Maharashtra.

Chavan, in fact, Tuesday declared that he would personally go and watch the movie along with his family.

As an extra precaution, the weekly off for most policemen has been cancelled to ensure that enough personnel are available for deployment on Friday.

The 39-year-old, however, clarified that he has no such plans for himself.

‘Right now, I have no such plans. May be 15-20 years later I will come out with a DVD when I am fitter,’ he said.

Praising Bipasha, he said that she looked in amazingly good shape after regularly doing the fitness exercises.

Abraham also had lot of good things to say about Bipasha’s Bengali movie ‘Sab Charitra Kalpanik’. ‘It is such a beautiful film. Sometimes certain cinemas miss out on some angles. But Bengali cinema is so layered.’

Asked why he has not been seen in any movie since ‘New York’, John said: ‘Earlier I was doing lot of movies. Some of them were good. Some not so good. I am learning through experience and being selective.’

He says that before signing contract for a film, he gives importance to three things – the entire set up, director and producer and the hero.

‘But I must say in lot of films now, the hero is discreet, as one finds in ‘Sab Charitra Kalpanik’.’

I remember walking the ramp in a lehenga- John Abraham

Kolkata, In his early days as a model John Abraham had even walked the ramp in a lehenga! The macho actor said though some in the audience were taken aback at his outfit, he is grateful to the designer Mona Lamba who gave him the opportunity in 2000.

“I remember walking the ramp in a lehenga you (Mona of the designer duo MonaPali) had designed. As I was walking I saw some in the audience loved it, while others were a bit taken aback. But thank you madam, for giving me the opportunity in my early days as a model,” John told reporters here.

He was in town to unveil the logo of the first ever Kolkata Fashion and Lifestyle Week.

Commenting on his fashion statement, he said: “For me, the best fashion is the one I am comfortable with.”

John has no favourite designers, but said: “Among Kolkata designers Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) is brilliant.”

Encouraging the young designers, he said: “You all have a long way to go. Remember, fashion is not about actors who wear your dresses, but about the dress itself.”

Shah Rukh and I are connected to each other – Karan Johar

Mumbai, It is common knowledge that “My Name Is Khan” is going through a storm. However, in the midst of it all, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are standing by each other. The director strongly believes that they are connected to each other more as brothers than being business partners.

“‘My Name Is Khan’ is a film which is a strong emotional connect for both Shah Rukh and I. He and I co-producing the film has nothing to do with money,” said Karan, whose Dharma Productions has made the film in collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

“We are too connected to each other and when it comes to a family, you don’t question their close association. Do you question someone who is working with his brother in one assignment after another? Shah Rukh and I may be having different surnames but that doesn’t take away from the strong sense of brotherhood that we both carry,” he added.

What makes him supremely confident about his life-long relationship with Shah Rukh? Specially when Farah Khan had to move from Shah Rukh to Akshay Kumar for “Tees Maar Khan”.

“See, its not just the matter of directing a film which would have him as an actor. Tomorrow, I may not be directing a film with him but the fact is that both of us will always be a part of each other’s production house. In some way or another, in whatever capacity, we would be working with each other,” said Karan.

Releasing Friday, the film also stars Kajol and is set in the post 9/11 US.

Clarifying yet another misconception about the film, Karan says “My Name Is Khan” is not an issue-based film.

“Please let me set the record straight that ‘My Name Is Khan’ is not an issue based film. Instead it’s a human drama about a couple. The film will make you smile and result in tears in your eyes. It’s a film which connects with you and is totally emotionally based.”

He also clarifies on the religious connotation saying: “By no means am I aspiring to take forward the baton of an issue. Instead I am just using it as a part of the narrative. The film doesn’t have any religious or spiritual undertone to it but basically sends across the message of humanity, so let’s watch the film for its worth.”

Big B set to feature in Malayalam film 'Kandahar'

KOCHI: Director Major Ravi says that Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has given his nod for his Malayalam film "Kandahar", a film about plane hijacking that will also star veteran Mohanlal.

The news came when Big B had made a short visit to the city on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Ravi, a former NSG commando who had directed two films featuring Mohanlal, said that he is just trying to imagine how the two greats would come in one single frame. "It is great feeling when I think of that," he said.

Amitabh will be seen as the father of a passenger on the ill-fated plane that has been hijacked and Mohanlal will play a commando.

The film is inspired by the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in 1999. It was hijacked while on its way from Kathmandu to New Delhi on Christmas eve by five Pakistani militants and was forced to land in three different airports - Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai - before spending a week on the tarmac in Kandahar with 186 hostages on board.

This is Ravi's fourth film after "Keerthichakara" and "Kuruskshetra", both featuring Mohanlal, and "Mission 90 Days", which told the real story of Ravi who tracked down the killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Mammootty played Ravi's role in the film.

"Khandahar" will be shot in Delhi, Nepal besides Kerala.

STAFF WRITER 16:44 HRS IST

"I have tried Bipasha's workout DVD personally and found it to be equally good for men as well, although it is meant for women. I just think that I should follow her routine now," John told reporters here today.

This is the best; she is in the prime shape of her life," the actor said.

Striker should bring carrom back in vogue

There was a time when children and adults alike enjoyed a game of carrom, but videogames seem to have taken over now. Actor Siddharth hopes his film Striker will bring back the lost popularity of carrom.

"Striker is not a sports film, but I am sure it will bring back carrom in vogue. Although it is still quite alive... we have Asian champions and many great players of the game in India...it will definitely get a boost in popularity with the film," Siddarth told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

"It's kind of a biographical film on Suryakant...however, that's not the only angle. It's an amalgamation of many stories in the slums of Mumbai. It is based in the 1980s when carrom used to be very popular and a rage in these small bylanes. It's about how this character is faced with many choices in life - good and bad - and what he chooses," said the south Indian actor, who earned rave reviews for his role in Rang De Basanti. Siddharth says he worked really hard to get into the skin of the character.

"I spent a lot of time in Mumbai slums, speaking to people there. I also underwent two months' training in carrom, not only to become a pro in the game and learn the tricks but also to learn the body language and gauge what goes on in the mind of the player," he said.

Not signing a Bollywood film right after Rang De Basanti, Siddharth said, was a conscious decision.

"I want to do films with which I can make an identity. It's not that I shied away from Bollywood. It's just that I am selective about the films I do. Even in Telugu, I have done just nine films in nine years. I didn't want to be part of a bad film. I have a strong track record and I wanted to maintain that by doing good films even in Hindi cinema," he said.

Acting skills apart, Siddharth is a good playback singer too and has sung two songs in Striker.

"I am a trained singer and my songs in the film are an extension of my character. I have sung a few songs in my films down south as well. The film has a unique soundtrack with six composers coming together for the first time for a film," he added.

Dirceted by Chandan Arora, Striker also starred Vidya Malvade. And Siddarth says he has found his "filmmaking soulmate" in Chandan.

"Chandan is my filmmaking soulmate. In the industry it is not always easy to find people who think like you. Mine and Chandan's visions meet and thus we had a great time filming the film. We are planning a couple of films more," he said.

While he will continue working for regional films, Siddharth will now concentrate a little more on Hindi movies as well.

"Apart from Striker I am finishing some work in Telugu; then I will focus on Bollywood. But this time there won't be a gap of four years," the actor said.

Striker – Film Review

Film: “Striker”
Cast: Siddharth, Padma Priya, Nicolette Bird, Ankur Vikal, Aditya Pancholi, Seema Biswas, Rajendra Gupta and Vidya Malvade
Director: Chandan Arora

“Striker”, as we can well see, was not an easy film to make. It’s not an easy film to see either. The vast near-epic scale scope and expanse of the slum saga stretches into two hours of a non-linear narration where time passages are made without borders.

The lack of punctuation marks in the telling of the tale of the coming of age and rage of the protagonist Surya (Siddharth) is a major detriment in identifying the swarm of characters as people who go beyond the immediate job of living their grass root-level lives and try to repair their lives and restore a method of morality behind the madness of a fringe existence.

The madness of slum-life, its eccentric crime modalities as seen through the eyes of the growing and aimless Surya, is brought out in the way editor Sajit Unnikrishnan cuts the material.

It is quite evident that director Chandan Arora has bitten more than the editor can finally chew. There’re stretches of undisclosed narrative material that seems to have been sacrificed to a serious economy of expression that borders on an austerity overdrive.

Characters such as the Muslim girl next door (newcomer Nicolette Bard) vanish from Surya’s life. But not before Surya does his own “Mere Mehboob” with the girl, even throwing a letter into her balcony. This is the Mumbai slum in the 1980s, in case you’ve forgotten.

Many questions that crop up in the course of the narrative remain unanswered to the bitter brutal end. All we know is that Surya wants a better life. He gets the bitter instead.

“Striker” opens and closes with the tension around the slums during the 1992 riots. The on-location shooting brings to the proceedings a kind of clipped and cutting edge and an intimate immediacy to the proceedings. You feel you are there in the slums with Arora’s characters. But you aren’t sure you want to be there. We never stay long enough with the characters to get to know them well.

The performances keep us moving, kicking and dragging with the seamless unpunctuated narrative. Almost every characters seems to get the point, Siddharth more so than most with a performance that creates contours in the climate of chaos. His layered performance is balanced and even. Siddharth hits the high notes without getting shrill.

Aditya Pancholi as his chief adversary on the carrom board and off it, is menacing yet restrained managing the age-leaps with startling ease. Ankur Vikal the hero’s hyper-ventilating best friend who comes to a sticky end, plays the part with relish. Yup, he too gets the point.

There’re some other fine actors who prop up in the narrative including Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas and Anoop Soni. There’s no room for them to make an impact. The same goes for the two leading ladies. Quiet and wordless Nicolette comes before interval, verbose and aggressive Padma Priya comes after.

“Striker” uses the metaphor of the strike on the carrom board with a fair amount of inner conviction that unfortunately gets substantially lost in a welter of crowds and noises signifying the fury of nulled lives. You can’t fall in love with Arora’s carefully-crafted world of slum-dogged obduracy where swords still rule and guns are a distant boom.

See the film for its frenetic characters who seem to have distant links with the people we saw in Vikram Bhatt’s “Ghulam” and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”. Happily the tragic outcome of the lives lived on the edge in the film is strictly their own.

‘My Name Is Khan’ will entertain, not make statement – Shahrukh Khan

Washington, It has some religion, a bit of politics and it’s set in the backdrop of a world shaking event, but for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan his latest venture is not so much about Islam post-9/11 as it is entertainment.

“The film is mainly entertainment,” Shah Rukh said in a lengthy interview with IANS over the phone from New York on a trip last week to promote his new film, “My Name Is Khan” (MNIK), releasing in the US Feb 12.

“If some issue is taken back home, I always tell people if they can take back a little more than an empty pack of popcorn, that’s interesting…that’s an added advantage to an entertaining film.”

Shah Rukh, who plays a Muslim Indian with Asperger’s syndrome living in the US, finding his marriage to a Hindu single mother (played by Kajol) crumbling post-9/11, wouldn’t agree that it’s the Islam angle that is grabbing the most attention in the US.

“A film normally deals with lots of issues, comedy, or it’s a tragedy or a serious film or a dramatic love story like ‘…Khan’ is meant to be,” he said. “If one starts talking or deciding on issues before a whole film is seen, it’s kinda not right to do, specially as a filmmaker.

“Normally, a film is more than the sum of its parts. It’s not like it’s a love story, it’s got a Karan Johar touch to social cinema, it has an angle of religion, it also has a part of politics, it has a world-shaking incident as a backdrop, it also has a lot of sweet songs. It combines all that.

“To me as a filmmaker, or part of a film, any aspect of the film can only be decided once one has seen the whole film. But there’s no denying that there is an aspect of religion in the film.”

Nor would Shah Rukh look at this and other recent Bollywood films about the fate of Indian Muslims in the US post-9/11 as an effort to redress any negative images people may have formed about Islam over the last nine years.

“Films normally are for entertainment. One doesn’t really make a conscious decision to make a statement with it. Within entertainment, if a statement gets made, it’s really nice for a filmmaker.

“You know, maybe ‘3 Idiots’ talks about education, but it’s an entertaining film. Similarly ‘Chak De! India’ talks about patriotism, but it’s a sports film.

“You can have issues related in a film, but when filmmakers of commercial proportions like Karan, myself and Kajol and all get together, it’s not to highlight an issue because it’s too expensive as a commercial venture to make a film about an issue and not entertain.”

To Shah Rukh, “the most interesting part of the fact as an actor is that I’m playing a character who’s got Asperger’s. It’s also not in any which way to show it in a light which is not nice…but for an actor that’s a great thing to do, you know, to play a (person with a) disorder like this which very few people know about.”

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to convince people about it when they see (the film). I don’t think at least commercial filmmakers from India really make a big-time film which is localised or even localised by an international issue,” he said.

“Commercial we will only know once the film releases,” said Shah Rukh when asked if MNIK isn’t one of Karan Johar’s least commercial offerings so far.

“…Yes, the only thing it has amiss is big set dance pieces, but we just felt with the disorder we were dealing with, it would look very unrealistic for the character Rizwan Khan to indulge in dancing of the order of we normally see in a Hindi film of Karan’s, or you might have seen earlier.

“Except for that, I think the venture is extremely commercial,” he said.

“In the last five years, there’s a whole paradigm shift as to what people accept as a commercial film,” Shah Rukh said describing it as “Karan’s evolution from making and keeping up with the trends of new commercial cinema in India and elsewhere”.

On professional challenges he faced during its filming, Shah Rukh said it was a “very difficult” character to play. “If I was to just put it simply, it’s very seldom that I’ve really gone ahead and played a character which exists in real life.

“And whenever you’re dealing with a disorder or a near…atypical situation, the first thought is that the sort of parameters you have to set that in no which way you are derogatory or deriding the disorder.

“You have to make the protagonist very proud of what it is. The second part is you have to come as close to reality in depicting that characterisation and so one had to study a lot and one does get worried…”

But a couple of people affected with the same disorder who were shown the film had told them “…it’s a great portrayal, it’s very close to someone with this kind of disorder”.

“Of course, having said that, I have taken a few cinematic liberties with it, because I’ve used three or four traits which may not exist simultaneously in one person and tried to create one character who has Asperger’s, called Rizwan Khan.”

“Mumbai’s health is fine,” Bachchan replied at a function here when reporters asked him about the recent Shiv Sena activities that have triggered tensions in the city.

New Delhi, Feb 6 (ANI): Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu launched a video album highlighting her fitness titled 'Bipasha Basu Love Yourself - Fit and Fabulous You' here on Friday.

A self-confessed fitness freak, she said that today's world is full of work pressure and tensions and people need to give time to keep themselves fit.

"If you actually start working and liking every quality about you, you actually will have no insecurities and complexities in life and there will be no negativity to fight. So you will focus better in your life and you will give better. So everything in your life is little more in harmony. That is the philosophy I believe in," said Basu.

This audio-video album is based on the core idea of being strong, healthy through psycho-physical fitness.

"It has got (exercises relating to) strength, cardio and abdomen and their three circuits. So it is an interval training, which causes fat loss even after 48 hours later. It is very scientific," she added.
