TV show to be based on Sonia Gandhi’s Life

It seems that Indian Television is revamping its style. After the Saas Bahu sagas, reality shows, social awareness and horror, it’s time to go political now. A new show based on politics will soon be launched on DD National.

A source says, “The show on DD National will be based on the life of Sonia Gandhi. It will be more of her journey as a small child, how she grows up and enters politics. The only difference being that she won’t be a foreigner here. On the contrary, she will be born and brought up in India. It’s just that the story has been inspired from her life.”

“Initially it will depict a love triangle between the protagonist and two other guys. But the events thereafter will bear an uncanny resemblance to Sonia’s life, with the lead actor being compelled to enter politics after her husband’s death. The title has not been fixed as yet but the show is expected to hit the air within the next two months. Shooting for the show has already started in Gujarat.” adds the source.

Elaborating on the cast of the show, the source says, “Shiju Kataria who essays the role of Smriti of ‘Behenein’ will be executing the role of the lead (Sonia Gandhi). She will be accompanied by Raza Murad who is also a well known TV actor. The show will be depicted in a filmy style with a similarity to Sonia Gandhi’s life but not a copy of it. It has a very powerful concept and will be aired on a prime time slot.”

We tried calling Shiju but she remained unavailable for comment!

From Gandhigiri to Chhatrapati Shivaji for Sanjay Dutt

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has acted in several films since his debut in 1981. All the characters had different shades right from a young, charming boy in Rocky to a criminal in Khalnayak and a lovable goon again in Munnabhai MBBS. But, Sanju Baba is going to do something totally different this time. He is going to don the role of great historical figure Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The project is being kept under wraps now but it is certain that Sanjay Dutt will be playing the role of the great Maratha warrior. Nobody is speaking about the project on record now as Dutt is busy with other assignments and will take at least a year to come out of legal hassles.

According to a source close to the project, “No one can essay the flamboyant Maratha warrior better than Sanjay Dutt. He looks as brave as the warrior and can gallop on the screen with a sword in hand. We needed someone, who can look like the character of Russell Crowe in Robin Hood or Gladiator.”

But, Soham Shah, who is directing the film, denies Sanjay Dutt being their first and the last choice for playing Shivaji. He said, “For now, I will say that I can never imagine making a film without Sanjay Dutt. I am here only by his support and guidance. I can think of working on a big project like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj only because of his support and trust. Right now, I am preparing to direct a movie for Sanjay Dutt Productions. I will start working on the Shivaji project only after completing this one.”

Shivaji is the director’s dream project and he has been working on it for more than a year now. Soham added, “I want the film to appeal to people of all age groups. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj would have special effects like that of Hollywood’s Prince Of Persia.”

Initially, the film was supposed to be in Hindi but Soham and the producers are trying to make the movie into a Hindi-Marathi bilingual.

Mumbai, June 30: When spotted together it is evident that they are very much in love – and Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has no qualms in saying that his wife and actress Aishwarya Rai is very supportive and encouraging. “Aishwarya is very supportive and encouraging. She is a very chilled out person and doesn’t take things to heart,” Abhishek told IANS. “People ask me if I changed after marriage. But I just say ‘Why should I change?’ Aishwarya loves me the way I am and married me for the way I am. Then why should I change at all,” he added. It was rumoured that Aishwarya would leave her acting career after marriage, owing to the popular belief that married actresses don’t do well in the industry. But the 36-year-old actress squashed all rumours and continued to be a part of the film industry.(IANS)

Movie Review – Krantiveer The Revolution

Starring: Introducing Jahan Bloch, Samir Aftab, Adiya Singh Rajput, Harsh Rajput, Farida Jalal, Ranjeet, Govind Namdeo, Mukesh Tiwari and Aman Verma
Director: Mehul Kumar

June 25, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Designed as a sequel to the super successful Krantiveer (1994) which got Nana Patekar the Best Actor, National Award, Krantiveer – The Revolution (KTC) is a weak attempt at recreating the patriotic fervor which the original had.

Roshni (Jahan Bloch) is the young daughter of the man responsible for the last revolution, Pratap Narayan Tilak and his wife (Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia). She just like her dad wants to rid the nation of corruption, and the evils present in the society. She gets herself a platform by joining a TV channel as an investigative journalist. She is hell bent on exposing all the scams in the country including those involving high profile businessmen and top ministers. Along with her friends Vishal (Samir Aftab), Goldie (Aditya Singh Rajput) and Uday (Harsh Rajput) she takes this crusade forward and becomes successful eventually despite many odds.

The sole reason why Krantiveer was a success was because of KK Singh’s dialogues, Nana Patekar’s character and Mehul Kumar’s direction. Here Singh is not involved with the project, Nana is not acting in the film and the veteran director though having made a sincere attempt, falls short. There is no direct relation of the plot to any of the 26/11 terror attack scenes which come towards the climax. Though Mehul Kumar has tried to show authenticity by using footage of the 26/11 terrorists attacks, he fails to impress the audiences.

His debutante daughter Jahan has been made to rant lengthy dialogues from the word go. While she does it with sincerity, it doesn’t really work. Too much responsibility has been given on her shoulders leaving less scope for the rest. New comers Samir Aftab, Adiya Singh Rajput, Harsh Rajput put in their honest efforts too. Senior actors like Ranjeet, Farida Jalal hardly get any scope to perform. Aman Verma playing the corporate head honcho, Mukesh Tiwari and Govind Namdeo playing sleazy ministers act well.

Music by Sachin-Jigar is passable and the songs ‘Khuda mere khuda’ and ‘Chhote tera birthday aaya’ work on screen. But the songs ‘Firangi paani’ and ‘Lau jalee’ were not needed. Editing and cinematography don’t match up to standards.

Though it may not be worth an effort to go to the cinema hall, the film definitely appears like a genuine attempt to awaken the young Indians to come forward and erase corruption from our politics.

Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta – Review

Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta: A Solid Bore
Cast: Prashant Narayanan, Aruna Shields, Lucky Hassan and Naved Aslam
Director: Pravesh Bhardwaj

June 25, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Aditya Mehta (Prashant Narayanan) is an artist who is more shown painting his wife’s toenails than the colours of the canvas. His wife Sakhi Mehta (Lucy Hassan) is shown to be having an extramarital affair with Karan Singh (Naved Aslam). Now, Karan’s wife Neera Singh (Aruna Shields) discovers that her husband is cheating on her and she ends up seeking solace in Aditya’s company. They get drawn together by shame and anger as they find more comfort in each other’s friendship. But despite bonding well, they try not to have a relationship with each other.

One fails to understand that though the adultery is shown openly obvious since the start, why do Aditya and Neera never try to confront their respective partners over it? Trying to make the film more provocative widespread nudity has been incorporated on the pretext that overcome his block by painting nude female form ala Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Now funnily, Neera is shown to be shying away from posing nude for the painting that Aditya wants to do, despite the fact that she has been shown moving around naked in Aditya’s warehouse for big part of the film. What irritates more are the continually censored blurs that attempt to cover up her nude body. The climax is supposedly symbolic but it is too rushed that you end up feeling there some more of the film left! There is nothing wrong in making a complete art house project but at least let the film connect on some level or derive some emotion out of the viewer apart from frustration!

Debutante director Pravesh Bhardwaj takes his own sweet time to establish the growing proximity between Aditya and Neera but leaves it hurriedly towards the climax. The film’s shot in London but you don’t see much of it apart from some unflattering lanes of London. A wonderful ghazal based track by Shujaat Hussain Khan goes waste in a film like this.

Prashant Narayanan is just about okay but he has done better work before. Aruna Shields is made to expose her body more than her acting skills. Lucky Hassan is passable. Naved Aslam is fair.

The film is a plain bore with nothing good to talk about. Please avoid!

Manisha Koirala turns politician in her first film, post Marriage

Recently, Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala wedded a Nepali businessman Samrat Dahal. The actress has signed her first film, post marriage, where she will be essaying the role of a politician.

In a statement, Manisha said, “I am very happy to get this role. I wanted to act in different films with challenging roles after marriage and this is just perfect. I am looking forward to start working in this film.”

Under the banner of Yograj Cinevista, the film will start rolling once the rest of the cast and crew are finalized.

According a statement issued by the producer, “We are making this women-centric film under the banner of Yograj Cinevista, in which Manisha will be playing the role of a politician.”

In real life, Manisha’s grandfather BP Koirala is the first elected Prime Minister of Nepal. The actress, who debuted in Bollywood in 1991 with Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar, said that she always wanted to play the role of a politician.

Manisha was highly appreciated for her performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1942: A Love Story, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Khamoshi and for Mani Ratnam’s Bombay as well as Dil Se.

She has other projects in her hand apart from this unnamed movie. These include Rohit Kaushik’s Chehere, Deepti Naval’s directorial debut Do Paise Ki Dhoop and director Onir’s I Am series, where she will be seen playing a Kashmiri woman.

Anushka Sharma star opposite Akshay Kumar in Patiala House

Nikhil Advani has chosen the relatively new actress Anushka Sharma to play the leading lady opposite Akshay Kumar in his upcoming movie Patiala House.

However, there is a reason behind choosing Anushka over any other top actresses. The sources inform that Nikhil has thought in the same lines as Aditya Chopra did when he cast Anushka in the movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi starring Shah Rukh Khan. The filmmaker wanted to keep the focus on the male actor Suri.

Nikhil also wants the audience to focus on the role of Akshay Kumar in the movie. At the same time, he wanted the characters to appear real in the film. However, the sources claim that the movie will offer Anushka a much stronger character than her character in Aditya Chopra’s movie.

Patiala House is reportedly a film with real characters, real emotions and real moments. He will put a tagline with his film as ‘A film by Nikhil Advani’. The director wants to thank Aditya for casting Anushka in his film.

The movie will also have veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in vital roles, who as a couple have given hits like Bobby. Patiala House deals with a second-generation Sikh in London, who sacrifices his dreams to protect the reputation of his father.

Katrina arranges special screening of ‘Raajneeti’ for Salman’s Family

For those who think that Katrina has severed all relations with Salman Khan and his family, there is news. Recently she arranged a show of her latest hit ‘Raajneeti’ for Salman’s dad, the renowned scriptwriter Salim Khan and the entire family…minus Salman, who maintains his clean slate vis-Ă -vis Katrina’s work.

He has not seen a single film of hers.

After tweeting to the entire world that he would definitely like to see Raajneeti and raising Katrina’s hopes, that he’d finally watch one of her films, Salman stayed away from the special screening of Raajneeti while the rest of the family saw and enjoyed the film.

Director Prakash Jha confirms that Salim saw the film in a show arranged by Katrina. “Salim Saab was full of praise for Raajneeti .He specially praised the dialogues which coming from him was a great compliment. Earlier Salim Saab had said what he and Javed Akhtar Saab wrote as a cop’s story in Zanjeer was nowhere near the authenticity of my cop’s story, Gangaa Jal. He’s a generous man.”

Salim Khan’s generosity was also evident in the call he made to Katrina praising her mature and restrained performance in Raajneeti.

About arranging the special show of Raajneeti for Salman’s family after they’ve apparently split, Katrina sighed, “I wish all these speculations on my personal life would end. Salman’s family is the only family I’ve known in Mumbai. That can’t change. Of course I wanted Salim Saab to see Raajneeti for a very special reason. He has seen my struggle in Bollywood from the start. He’s very proud of me.”

Raavan – Movie Review

Film: Raavan
Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Govinda, Ravi Kissen and introducing Vikram
Director: Mani Ratnam

Since the time of the announcement of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, curiosity about how India’s most accomplished filmmaker manages to do a modern day adaptation of the mythological epic, Ramayan, has known no bounds. Thankfully, Mani succeeds in his own inimitable way. His team’s painstaking hard work shows in every frame of the film and his actors help him raise the film’s bar.

The film opens with policemen killed at various places around Lal Maati, a small town in Northern India. This is followed by abduction of the local police chief Dev’s (Vikram) wife Raagini (Aishwarya Rai). The dreaded low cast tribal lord Beera (Abhishek) is behind the kidnapping. Dev (Vikram) immediately gets hot on the trail of Beera with trusted lieutenant Hemant (Nikhil Dwivedi) and seeks the help of the jovial forest guard Sanjeevani (Govinda). Beera knows the dense jungle like the back of his hand and is helped by the tribals, managing to stay just one step ahead of Dev and his team. But as the cat and mouse chase proceeds between Beera and Dev, the initial hate of Raagini for Beera subsides. As Dev inches closer, the near maniacal Beera shows he has a heart too and Raagini almost loses hers to him. What follows after Beera and Dev come face to face forms the rest of the film.

Taking on a mega epic like Ramayan and turning it on its head giving his own personal interpretation, Mani Ratnam dares to depart from the religious text and succeeds in showcasing how Ram can be a Raavan and how a Raavan can also be a Ram. Aided by the best technical crew of Indian cinema, Mani has made his multilayered film, a technical marvel to watch with awe. The first half moves on rapidly mostly focusing on Dev’s chase of Beera, but however it gets boring beyond a point since the story hardly moves ahead. Mani also fails to establish the exact setting of the outlaws. Are they Naxals or a modern day Robin hood gang? But it is the beginning of the second half where Mani begins to pack his solid punches and achieves the peak with an unusual climax. Beera’s background (the reason for Raagini’s abduction), Dev’s impatience to grab Beera, Raagini’s gradual change of perception about Beera and eventually the final face off between Dev and Beera have all been terrifically captured.

Abhishek is nothing short of brilliant, portraying Beera. If you thought Abhishek delivered his best under Mani in Yuva and Guru, watch Raavan for his evolvement into an actor of true caliber. Aishwarya Rai delivers a top notch act. Makeup less and forever battered and bruised, Aishwarya’s eyes convey a lot more than the shrieking her character has to resort to most of the time. Vikram unfortunately is saddled with a one dimensional character for most part of the film until the climactic punch. He looks fearless and arouses enough curiosity as an actor to watch him play Beera in the Tamil version of the film. Govinda as Sanjeevani brings on the much required comic relief in the tense proceedings and succeeds. Ravi Kissen grabs the opportunity to impress with both his hands and does well. Priyamani playing Beera’s sister, in her brief role manages to bring out the pathos of her unfortunate character.

Mani takes you to virgin locations within India never exposed before on screen. Be it the thick dense forests in Kerala or the same state’s dangerous Athirappally Waterfalls or the exotic Orcha in Madhya Pradesh and Malshej Ghat valley in Maharashtra, Santosh Sivan and Manikandan’s camera captures it all with super finesse. The action finale on the hanging bridge, a never seen before feat in Indian cinema makes your heart skip a beat.

Oscar winner A.R. Rahman’s music coupled with Gulzar’s lyrics is mesmerizing but Mani hardly gives any time for any song to register any impact, as if in a quick hurry.

The subtle statement Mani incorporates against the system on behalf of the low caste have-nots is laudable but could have been a little more elaborate. Nevertheless, as Mani Ratnam’s metaphoric interpretation of the grand epic, Raavan definitely deserves a visit to your nearest cinema hall for its plusses certainly over ride its minuses.

Asin warned not to pair with Salman Khan

The South Indian Film Federations had protested against the IIFA awards function, held in Colombo. They boycotted the awards function organized by the Sri Lankan Government which had mercilessly murdered thousands of innocent Tamilians. The Tamil organizations also banned the actors and actresses who participated in the function. But a few actors like Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan paid no heed and went ahead with their participation.

Hrithik Roshan’s Kites was ousted from the theatres in South India as a result.

Salman Khan is currently acting in a film which has Asin paired with him. The Sri Lankan Government has invited the producer to shoot this film in Sri Lanka. So the film which was to be shot in Mauritius was relocated to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Government has extended all facilities for the shooting of this film because Salman Khan had participated in the IIFA,.

But now there is a protest going on against Asin because of her pairing up with Salman. Lots of people are calling her up, on her cell phone, and requesting her not to act in this film.

The Salman Khan film Ready will not be screened in the five states of South either.

Asin, while speaking about this said, “I also got the invitation to participate in the IIFA. But respected the emotions and sentiments of the Tamil people and boycotted that function. But the producer here, has only signed me to act in the film Ready. I have given my call sheet to act in his film.”

Malika Sherawat acting with Salma Hayek!

It has been a long time since Mallika Sherawat was last seen in Bollywood films
. The sexy lady was missing from the industry, as she was busy with her ambitious Hollywood projects. Bollywood filmmakers might have stopped offering her roles, but the doors of Hollywood have now opened for her.

Miss Sherawat’s first overseas project The Myth with Jackie Chan, has inspired her to take up the route to Hollywood. She has already acted in Hollywood movies like Hissss and Love Barack. Now, she is going to share screen space with Hollywood actress Salma Hayek. In fact, the two ladies have reportedly bonded very well.

During the Cannes film festival, Mallika met Salma Hayek, who expressed her interest to work together in future.

Mallika and Salma starrer film is supposed to be a women-centric one and Sherawat will be seen in the central character.

The source further informed, “The much talked about movie’s story revolves around abuse on women, which exists all over the world. Mallika loved the storyline and has shown interest to be a part of it.”

Aamir Khan to finally join Twitter July 1

After much persuasion from megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan has finally decided to join micro-blogging website Twitter July 1.

"Aamir will be on Twitter from July 1. He was not on Twitter till now because he thought he won't be able to give enough time to it. Ode to Katrina Kaif’s inspires poem for Farhan’s Film

A couplet written by a fan in celebration of Katrina Kaif’s beauty and virtues has surfaced on numerous websites and blogs. It has inspired an entire song devoted to Katrina in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’.

Says a source close to the project, “Katrina plays a free- spirited girl, a wanderer at heart and a bohemian gypsy by nature whom the three male leads Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol are seriously fascinated by. She inspires the boys to chase their dreams and not being afraid of reaching deep into the darkness to find light.”

And that’s precisely the character that the film’s director Zoya Akhtar’s father the sensitive poet Javed Akhtar will have to describe in his lyrics, for a song devoted to Katrina’s character.

Says the source, “There was only a vague idea for such a song in Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. But when the poem by Katrina’s fan surfaced on the net everyone felt that the lyrics describing Katrina’s character beauty and zest for life were needed.”

Katrina, neck-deep in shooting, with Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay in Spain is flattered by all the attention she’s getting online and in person. “But I can’t think of anything but how to get into the character. This role requires a lot of physical preparation. I had almost no time to prepare for Zoya’s film. I delayed my departure from Mumbai till the very last minute because I wanted to enjoy the attention that Raajneeti was getting. I get attached to a film and need a transitional period between one project and the next. I didn’t get that space before coming to Spain.”

But pleasure comes with a price. Katrina’s preparation for her zany character in Zoya’s film is half-complete. She needs to master many outdoor sports. Most of them are new to her. But she is learning on the job in Spain. “I landed here at night and started shooting next morning, completely unprepared. But now I’m getting a hang of it.”

About the ode by her fan she says, “It’s flattering to have people write such wonderful lines for you. I can’t pretend to be unaffected by all the attention that I’m getting. At the same time, I can’t let it go to my head. There’s so much more to be done.”

Katrina Kaif plans to start a film marketing firm

Bollywood beauties are not dumb they have brains for business too. One of the leading Bollywood actresses has proved it. She is none other than Rajneeti girl, Katrina Kaif. Katrina has revealed a very different side when it came to acting. Now, she is planning to launch her own business firm for the marketing of films.

Katrina Kaif, is busy shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi in Spain. She is missing the Mumbai rains as she loves the smell of the wet earth on a rainy day. Thereafter, she will leave for London to shoot for Dostana 2 with John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan.

However, Katrina is not just keeping herself content with a handful of films. She is very serious about starting the film marketing firm. In fact, she has started looking for an appropriate location for her office. She is on a look out for an office area located, somewhere between Bandra and Andheri.

Speaking about this new business, Katrina said, “I am just waiting for the guidance of my friends and colleagues about the project. I want to start the marketing division as soon as possible. Film marketing will be a challenging job for me. It is very exciting and I am eager to know how strategies are made for selling the products to the audience as well as the market.

Why this decision of movie marketing? The Bollywood queen said that her love for numbers has inspired her to take this up. According to her, she can easily remember the collection data of movies by heart. It helps her to know, which films are doing good business at the box office.

Katrina is planning to appoint experienced people in her firm, those who can help her. She is confident of bringing a ‘highly professional attitude’ to the business.

The lady is also very aware of the importance of film marketing these days. She said, a lot of movies are released every week, in the theatres, which also include a good number of Hollywood movies. Marketing it properly is very important because it helps to bring in a good opening collection and make it stand out.

‘I Hate Luv Storys’ still unsold in Mumbai?

One of the most awaited films by the youth across the country today is Karan Johar’s, I Hate Luv Storys. The film is generating a big buzz not only amongst the generation X but also among the trade circles, thanks to its hit music and youthful charm. To top it all it is a Dharma Productions film too. Our trade sources inform us that UTV, which holds the film’s worldwide distribution rights and is the co-producer of the film, has an offer of Rs. 65 million for the distribution rights of Mumbai circuit alone!

Now that is a quite a good price for a film whose lead pair hasn’t seen success for a long time now. But despite that, confident, that more exciting offers would soon come its way, UTV has still not finalized the deal. The reason being, UTV expects to close the Mumbai deal for Rs. 80 million.

A trade pundit remarks, “Well that is pretty notable, considering that the film stars just Imraan Khan and Sonam Kapoor and is directed by a debutante director, Punit Malhotra. One can call it either over confidence or full confidence. Imran’s last two films Kidnap and Luck were box office duds and Sonam is yet to taste success.”

Cell Phone phobias of the Bollywood stars

In this day and age of Global connectivity, Bollywood stars seem to have developed the strangest cell phone etiquette. They want to be in touch with the world, but at the same time they prefer to remain aloof. Shaheen Raaj takes a look at this strange phenomenon.

Gone are the days when the yesteryear stars, including those who held sway till the 90’s, were blessed with only a landline, which was always manned personally by them, when at home. So much so that even their secretaries or houseboys hardly dared to meddle with their telephonic chores unless their Sahabs or Madams were busy shooting outdoors. And those days the outdoor locales extended only as far as Kashmir, Shimla or Darjeeling.

Thanks to the technological revolution today, stars can now be tracked down even if they are shooting in a remote corner of the world. Yet, they never felt as insecure as they do now. This has made the task of the film scribes much more difficult. The first thing they have to do to break the communication barrier is to get the latest cell numbers of the stars, which keeps on changing..

Time to unravel their cellular secrets. Let’s begin with Jackie Shroff aka Jaggu Dada. He is the only star who has not changed his number after going mobile. Also, he makes it a point to answer all his calls with the same standard opening line, ‘Haan bol biddu, kaise yaad kiya?’ He could be at the other end of the globe, yet he patiently answers all his callers and assures that he would do the needful only on returning back home.

One actress with an unusual phone phobia is Bipasha Basu {Bips!}. When yours truly, after several attempts, finally managed to track her on phone, she avoided prolonging the conversation saying: “You have caught me on a wrong day as I have been hospitalized for a serious ailment. I generally don’t take calls, but if it’s necessary just send me a SMS. I will definitely get back to you.” Definitely, Ms Bips!

The story repeats for her hunky beefcake beau John Abraham. Every time I managed to get him on the mobile, he would give a similar excuse no matter what the time or the date. “You have caught me on a wrong day as I am in a hospital attending to a friend who has been hospitalized for a serious ailment. Besides I have made a conscious decision of not giving any interviews till my next release comes up.” Now, now guys you can put two and two together and draw your own conclusions. Okay!

Then there are two other stars, who never take their calls directly Sunjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty unless they know a scribe on a one to one level. But for first timers and strangers, they see to it that the caller’s message is not only delivered to them, but action is promptly taken. Sunjay Dutt’s Man Friday not only receives the call, but also fixes up a proper appointment for you and rests only when he plonks you right in front of the Deadly Dutt. And the same holds true in case of Anna alias Suniel Shetty. Of course with his own Man Friday gracefully coordinating the whole affair.

Queen Bee Rani Mukherjee and the ravishing Raveena Tandon too never answer their calls directly. The former makes her mother and the latter makes her secretary to do the needful. On the other hand the gorgeous Bollywoodian diva Rekha’s Man oops Woman Friday Farzana does gets back to you only when you send her, first a detailed SMS and then your detailed requirements or rather the core of your story and that too funnily enough both on her pager! Mademoiselle Rekha and Farzana still seem to be living in Stone Age!

While former Miss. Universe Sushmita Sen’s houseboy really gets on your nerves as he always cradles the cell phone and delivers a clichĂ©d round the clock reply.

“Memsaab so rahi hain ji.”

Next, when I had tried to contact Faffy dear oops Aftab Shivdasani, he was holidaying alone, or so he wanted me or every caller to believe, in South Africa. So naturally his mobile had a recorded message.

“Call my mom on…..” I did and then thankfully his mother Joyce Shivdasani not only attended my call, but also delivered my message on the South African hotel number of the ‘Mast’ and ‘Masti’ bhara actor. Who promptly called me back from his overseas sojourn and instantly fixed up the interview session for the day he would land up on the home terrain. So once he reached Mumbai he called me up on my cell and asked me too meet him up at the airport. The interview was done in his car on his way back home.

But then trust Akki aka Akshay Kumar for his constant cellular pranks. The moment I dialed his number ‘His Masters Voice’ boomed in my ears, “ Hi! I’m Akshay Kumar and you know what to do?’ Yes. I knew. I left a message for him in his voice mailbox and forgot about it. The next thing I knew was that his Woman Friday Ms Pooja started hounding me on my cell phone that too at unearthly hours for ‘fixing’ up an interview almost akin to a match-fixing syndrome. But alas! The interview never happened until I was on the verge of tearing my hairs apart. As in the meanwhile the action hero had safely left for one of his foreign shoots. And finally before I could heave a sigh of relief, Akki Baba gave me a midnight jolt by making an overseas apologetic call with the option, “Can we do a telephonic interview now?” Since I was already bugged by his pranks, I politely declined his generous ‘overseas’ offer then. The reward: An excellent vibing with him since then with no more mobile pranks repetition.

Last but not the least is the father and son duo of Suresh and Vivek Oberoi in tandem with their joint Woman Friday. So just as an absentee student lands up in school with a medical certificate first she and then Papa Oberoi always return my calls with an excusable cellular medical report on behalf of their always-recuperating Jr. Oberoi’s sickly state of affairs. Until I had finally caught up with the healthy looking Vivek at a Mumbai premiere. Oberoi Baba clarified, “Don’t you trust them? You see I have now been nicknamed a china doll, by one and all, as I keep having this great humpty dumpty fall.” Needless to say I was dumbfounded.

So the ultimate analysis of the Bollywoodian stars Cell phone phobia is that after all these and more ‘accidental’ and typically funny, filmy cellular encounters I think that I have turned over a new leaf, from a veteran freelancing scribe to an amateur freelancing cellular jockey. Period!

Akshay Kumar in Ghajini director’s next, Vipul Shah to produce

Murugadoss has taken his next script for a Hindi film to Akshay Kumar and is all set to direct his second Hindi two years after the all-time grosser Ghajini.

Akshay’s close friend and business associate Vipul Shah who’s currently producing the Hindi version of the Telugu hit Kakha Kakha with John Abraham , will produce Murugadoss’s second Hindi film too.

No stone is being left unturned to make sure that the Akshay-Murugadoss team comes up with a whammy as big as Ghajini. Though tightlipped about the project, Vipul Shah is all set to spend whopping Rs 20-25 crores on the action sequences alone.

Akshay’s brief to the director. “I’ve a reputation for delivering stunts. Make sure the action rocks.”

Unlike Ghajini, Murugadoss’ second film is not a remake of one of his Tamil-Telugu hits.

Speaking from Chennai the shy dimunitive director says, “Yes, my screenplay for the film with Akshay Kumar is an original, not a remake of one of my Tamil films. Like Ghajini it is basically a love story with a strong action base.”

The film starts shooting in January 2011.

On meeting Akshay over the project Murugadoss was told to make the violence “more fun than gory”. The reference to Ghajini’s stomach-churning brutalization of Asin’s character was not lost on the director who is at the moment busy brushing up his Hindi.

During Ghajini Murugadoss couldn’t speak or understand a word of Hindi. “But I’m changing that. By the time Akshay and I start working together I’d be much better able to understand Hindi.”

Though Murugadoss is not yet willing to divulge the name of the female lead in his Akshay starrer, Ghajini gal Asin, whom producer Vipul Shah is very fond of , and came close to signing for the Hindi remake of Kakha Kakha, is apparently the chosen one.

Two years ago Asin had opted out of making her debut with Akshay Kumar in Priyadarshan’s De Dana Dan because she had found the role insubstantial.

Not one to hold grudges, Akshay constantly on the prowl for fresh co-stars, has given the nod to Asin.

Says Murugadoss, “We haven’t really decided on Akshay’s co-star. But yes, Asin is a strong contender.”

Incidentally Murugadoss’ project with Shah Rukh Khan is still on. “We’ve met and he’s liked my idea. We’ve to work out details.”

SRK and family to join the Premiere Of Raavan in London

Mani Ratnam’s much waited film Raavan is being premiered in London and SRK will be attending the event with wife, Gauri Khan and the kids if we go by Big B’s tweets

On Sunday, Amitabh Bachchan, twitted, “Shah Rukh, Abhishek probably spoke to you about the London premiere of Raavan, See you, Gauri and the kids there. Good that you are coming.”

Shah Rukh is in London and busy with the shooting of his upcoming film Ra 1 right now. The Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai starrer Raavan is being premiered in London on June 16 at 7 P.M.

Raavan, the bilingual movie, also stars Tamil superstar Vikram. It is releasing on June 18 across the world.

Abhishek Bachchan is currently in New Delhi to promote Raavan. Thereafter, he will leave for Hyderabad and then to Mumbai, where he will promote the film on a TV show. Finally, the couple will fly to London on June 15.

Akshay Kumar not comfortable doing Hollywood films

Hollywood has always been the ultimate goal for many of our Bollywood actors. Some of the big names in Bollywood have tried their hands in Hollywood films but none could not make it very big so far.

Akshay Kumar, the Bollywood superstar, has made his mark, both in the comic and action genre, is considered to be a good pick for Hollywood. But, our Akki seems to be satisfied with the tag of the highest paid actor of Bollywood now.

The actor is receiving several roles, both small and big, from Hollywood but chose not to go for them yet. Akshay thinks he is not going to fit well in Hollywood and is not willing to desert his fans here in India.

Speaking to the media in London the ‘Khiladi’ of Bollywood said, “I am happy and satisfied with the Bollywood offers. Here, I have a huge fan group to entertain and I am not going to fit in to Hollywood so I keep refusing to do projects there.”

In his next film Khatta Meetha, Akshay will don the role of a Marathi manoos ‘Sachin Tichkule’, a struggling road construction contractor. It is his fifth film with filmmaker Priyadarshan. It is going to be yet another addition to his comedy films.

Akshay thinks, making people laugh is the toughest job, which he will do again in Khatta Meetha. It is a political satire on the widespread corruption. Southern star Trisha will be playing the female lead role opposite Akshay. The film is expected to hit the Indian theaters on July 23. It is a remake of the Malayalam hit film Vellanakalude Nadu, which was released in 1989.

We agree with Akshay! He does not need a Hollywood project as he is the indomitable King of Bollywood now!

Abhishek Aishwarya Bachchan take underwater vows

It has literally been a case of jumping from the fire into the water for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. If fire is a recurrent motif in the cinema of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, water seems to be Mani Ratnam’s favourite element.

According to members of the Raavan cast, more than 80 percent of the film has been shot in, under, around or below the rain and in the water in the forests, rendering Raavan the most hydro-centric film in the history of Indian cinema.

Says a member of the cast, “We were drenched to our skin constantly. Abhishek and Aishwarya were talking, dancing, singing and reciting poetry in the water.”

Abhishek’s character of the outlaw even proposes to Aishwarya in water.

According to a source, there comes a point in the plot where the cop’s wife begins to get attracted to the outlaw who had kidnapped her. He proposes to her, circling in the water instead of the holy fire while Aishwarya stands on the river bank.

Says the cast member, “It was almost like the two were getting married by taking their vows through the holy water rather than the fire.”

More seriously affected by this extreme circle of fire and water created by her two favourite directors is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

She was heard telling a friend that she has virtually gone through an ordeal by fire and water.

In fact Abhishek and Aishwarya have worked so extensively in the water for Raavan that they don’t wish to do even a rain song in the near future.

Abhishek Bachchan Creates Online History!

Abhishek Bachchan, is perhaps the only star in the Indian film industry, creating, unique historical records with his film’s promotions. Last year, his whirlwind promotional tour for his film Delhi 6 , across seven cities was a world record for public appearances by a film star, at different cities in 12 hours. The Junior Bachchan has now achieved yet another exceptional feat. For his upcoming film Raavan’s promotions he created history by chatting with over 50,000 fans online at the office of Zapak. Tremendous excitement by his fans, eventually lead to a system crash. However, it was restored immediately.

This is the first time that a star has encountered such an enormous fan following for an online chat. Recently Hrithik Roshan, had managed to get a good number, of around 27,000 plus online fans for a chat while promoting Kites. But Abhishek has surpassed them all.

The very fact that the actor is being followed by hoards of fans on the streets wherever he is promoting his movie also proves that Abhishek is finally is a star on his own right today.

Abhishek’s role as that of the mysterious Raavan in Mani Ratnam’s movie has been creating a lot of buzz. This will be the third time that Abhishek gets so much fan appreciation for his Mani Ratnam movie. The first being Yuva followed by Guru.

Boman Irani’s new talent surprise all

It was a pleasant surprise for the audience of the IIFA Awards at Sri Lanka when Raju Singh, the renowned music director teamed up with Boman Irani. It was in fact, quite a show stopper that evening.

A source says, “Boman took everyone by surprise by playing a guitar and singing live. ‘Give me some sunshine, give me some rain… from the movie 3 Idiots is a song he likes and sang it with gusto. This was followed by 50 kids from Sri Lanka. Getting Boman to do this was a piece of cake, his dedication and commitment in doing it made this project an absolute pleasure.”

Raju Singh while talking about the moment revealed, “It was great to do such a different act with Boman. He loved the song and the track so he came to me and we rehearsed it together with the group, he rehearsed it in accompaniment to the guitar.”

What touched you that day? “ Actually Boman started the act and as soon as he started singing, everyone joined in, and suddenly Salman Khan, stood up clapping, followed by Anil Kapoor and many more. This was very touching.”

Hatts off to you Boman! You are the one who comes up with innovative acts every time!

Aishwarya Rai pays Abhishek a surprise visit

Normally the Bachchans have a rigid rule about not mixing business with pleasure. But on Thursday morning, when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan landed in Mumbai from Paris, she broke the golden rule when she dropped in unannounced, to meet Abhishek at the Reliance Web World where he was doing out-of-town press interviews.

Says a source, “Lately Abhishek and Aishwarya have had very little time together. After their short anniversary holiday, Abhishek got busy with the shooting of Abhinay Deo’s Game in Greece while Aishwarya returned to India for a stint of Robot. She was then in Paris to honor the Brazilian tennis champ Gustavo Kuerten for his work with disadvantaged children.”

Says a source, “At the charity dinner that followed, Aishwarya bonded with Steffi Graf and Mary Pierce and kept missing Abhishek because he was a big fan of both.”

The minute she landed in Mumbai from Paris, Aishwarya asked the family driver to take her wherever Abhishek was. A first for her because normally she doesn’t intrude when her husband is working. Even when she joins him on long outdoors locations, she never hangs around the sets when he’s shooting.

Says a friend of Aishwarya, “This time she made an exception because she was missing Abhishek all the way from Paris to Mumbai. And besides, Abhishek was doing promotional work for their film together. She not only met him but also joined impromptu in the talk with their fans on radio from Jaipur and Ahmedabad.”

Says a family friend, “The funny part is, the Bachchans are never together these days. Now that Aishwarya is home, the senior Bachchan left for Paris, the city that Aishwarya left yesterday. In fact, their flights must have crossed each other.”

Ek Second Jo Zindagi Badal De

Starring: Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala, Muammar Rana, Nikita Anand and Agastyaa Singh
Director: A Partho Ghosh

June 11, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Having missed the press show of the film, it was a tough job on my part to convince the multiplex staff to play this film which had no audience but just myself because I had to review this film. While they almost decided to cancel the show, they finally kept it on as two couples came in for the show, confident of seeking solace in the empty hall. Now if that, my dear friends, hasn’t given you any idea of how the film is! Well! Read on.

The film narrates the tale, rather the tales of Rashi (Manisha Koirala) who is engaged to the famous novelist Shantanu Rai (Moammar Rana). She is unaware of all the girls who were present in Shantanu’s life before. Then destiny plays a game bringing Rashi face to face with a situation when she loses her job and misses her train, the very same day. Here on, the narrative structure suggests two parts. One where she is unable to catch the train and what follows thereafter and second one where she manages to catch a train and meet Yuvraj (Jackie Shroff) – who is a fun loving and kind hearted person.

With a plot, that is blatantly copied from Gwyneth Paltrow starrer Sliding Doors (1998) which incidentally wasn’t much of a box office success, ESJZBD is a total bore. Though the bottom line of the plot suggests that whatever is destined to happen, do happen but if we fight against it and turn around the incident it will occur accordingly. But nowhere does the screenplay matches up to that. Badly written, and badly directed the film is a total waste of your time.

Director Partho Ghosh ,who had once delivered super hits like 100 Days, Agnisakshi and Dalaal has lost his form and this one shows that he has completely lost his technical finesse as well. One wonders who the target audience of this film is. Manisha Koirala may be making her comeback but audiences have lost interest in her already.

Manisha Koirala, in an author backed role, fails to evoke any interest due to her laid back style of acting. Jackie Shroff ,appears disinterested too. Pakistani actor Moammar Rana is mechanical. Nikita Anand looks hot and indulges in an uninhibited body display but displays very little of her acting talent. Rozza Catalano is just about okay but dances well in the item song. The producer of the film Suniel makes a blunder by casting himself in the film.

All in all, this is one of those films which shall be forgotten past its release day. Just avoid it!

IIFA has helped Sri Lanka's image as safe nation: Vivek Oberoi

Actor Vivek Oberoi, who extended his IIFA trip here to help in the rehabilitation in Sri Lanka's war-ravaged areas, says the presence of Bollywood stars has helped country's image as a safe destination.

The country is keen to repair an image battered by the civil war that lasted for close to three decades.

The government rolled out red carpet to Bollywood stars for the India International Academy Awards (IIFA) gala but big names like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan boycotted the event over protests by Tamil bodies in India.

However, Oberoi said the presence of Bollywood stars will help spread the goodwill.

"You have had many global celebrities come down to Sri Lanka on one platform and endorse your nation and enhance your brand value. These are things that are immeasurable in terms of value. So many fans across the globe suddenly wake up and say wow my favourite star. He went to Sri Lanka. Vivek Oberoi went there with his family. That means it is safe," Oberoi told reporters.

Oberoi visited Sri Lanka's former war-ravaged Vavuniya city and other areas in the district to begin a rehabilitation project there. He, along with his parents, travelled to Vavuniya by air and was accompanied by Abeywardena.

The Company actor held discussions with the District Secretary of Vavuniya, NGOs and the displaced and resettled civilians.

Later he visited resettled people in Nedunkerni in Vavuniya district. The actor is reportedly planning to build a school there with the help of local and Bollywood artistes.

Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywarden said the award show had generated a lot of good will for Sri Lanka.

"As many as 610 million people in 110 countries will watch the IIFA award ceremony on July 4. Our target is to increase the number of (global) tourists by 50 per cent by 2012. We will achieve our target," Yapa said.

"In the end it is not a question of who arrived or not. What is important is the message that was sent to the world stating there is a conducive atmosphere in Sri Lanka for such an event to be held and anyone could visit the country and spend a holiday in a peaceful atmosphere," the minister added.

Bollywood goes back in time

Seems like our filmmakers are keen to recreate the era gone by. Several films have been set in earlier times. We saw the retro look in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om too The recent Badmaash Company and Shootout at Lokhandwala were set in the 1990’s. Two upcoming films Action Replay and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai will once more bring back the earlier age on screen.

Vipul Shah’s Action Replay, starring Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai will revisit the disco age of Bollywood. Set in the 1980’s, it has the lead pair going in to complete the retro mode with regard to sets, costumes etc. The two have even shot for a song, paying tribute to the jodis of yesteryears.

Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbai brings back the 1970’s, the age of mafia, smuggling and cabaret. The film is about the underworld and stars Kangana Ranaut, Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi. The filmmakers have given special attention to the look and styling of the characters to get the mood right.

That’s not all – Ashutosh Gowarikar’s next Khelenge Hum Jee Jaan Se revolves around the freedom struggle. Blast from the past anyone?

Once Bollywood’s sexy icon Dimple Kapadia turns 53

Dimple Kapadia who debuted in Bobby back in 1973 turns 53 today. The sensational beauty, Dimple, was the discovery of the late veteran Raj Kapoor. He gifted the film industry with this talented actress in Bobby where she co-starred with Rishi Kapoor.

Dimple Kapadia was just 16 years then. Time has flown since then, and the young 16 year old girl is now a mother and grandmother. Dimple was last seen in the 2008 movie Luck By Chance! She will soon be seen in Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House which is set for a release in November 2010. Sources say that she is also set to do a cameo in an upcoming Malayalam flick titled Bombay Mithai and is signing a lot of movies.

Filmfare and National Award winner Dimple Kapadia, is currently shooting for Patiala House with son in law Akshay Kumar at London. We extend our best wishes to her on this very special day!

Ranbir’s Rajneeti co-star Sarah Thompson moving to Bollywood

One more Caucasian beauty is all set to try her luck in Bollywood. Sarah Thompson who plays Ranbir Kapoor’s American girlfriend in Raajneeti, seems completely smitten him.

She says that she’s all set to make her move from the US to Bollywood. And has hired herself a Hindi tutor. “When I started working on Raajneeti I knew no Hindi. That was okay. I had to play a girl who doesn’t know any Hindi and all I had to do was mutter a smattering of bad Hindi.”

But now Sarah has got herself a Hindi teacher. “I want to make a career in Bollywood. For that I need to know the language. So I got myself a teacher. Ab mujhe Hindi bolne aati hai.”

She gushes, “I love India and Indian films. Mumbai reminds me of New York. The same energy and bustle and now I want to be part of it.”

This is Sarah’s third visit to India. “I came for the first time to shoot in Bhopal for Raajneeti and then I came to dub for the film. Now I’m back for the release and I’m nervous and anxious, yeah! I want to do more Bollywood films, and yes I am shifting to Mumbai.”

This time Sarah has come complete with a wish-list of Bollywood directors she wants to work with. “I want to meet Vishal Bhardwaj and Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. In fact, I am meeting Rakeysh Mehra shortly .I saw Rang De Basanti and said to myself, ‘Why couldn’t I have played the British girl in the film?’ I’ve seen Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey twice. He’s another Bollywood director that I really want to work with.”

Sarah admits she had not heard of Prakash Jha when he offered her the role in Raajneeti. “But when I met him and he narrated the role of Ranbir Kapoor’s American girlfriend to me I knew that I had to do it. He gave me his Gangaajal and Apaharan to watch. And that’s how I was introduced to a totally new facet of Bollywood. Before watching Prakashji’s films I thought Bollywood meant singing and dancing. Here was a gritty realistic cinema that I certainly wanted to be part of.”

The starry-eyed but grounded young actress says she has links with India. “My parents have visited India many times, not just for short tourist sightseeing visits but lengthy exploratory trips. Our home is filled with an aura and souvenirs from India .Me and my two sisters grew up hearing fascinating stories about India.”

Sarah says she has her parents’ blessings in making a career in Bollywood. “If I do manage to make a career here my parents would be very happy. Yes, I do miss them when I am in India. Hopefully when I shift they’d come and visit me in Mumbai. I love Mumbai, just roaming around places like the Colaba Causeway makes me feel at home.”

As part of her background research for Raajneeti Sarah read up as much as she could on the Internet in Indian politics. She was also made to watch Saawariya by Prakash Jha to understand her co-star’s acting style.

And Sarah was hooked!

“Before working with Ranbir I had seen only Saawariya and thought he was outstanding. Then when we reached Bhopal, Katrina and Prakashji took me to watch Wake Up , Sid. And I was like… oh my God! When I met Ranbir the first thing I blurted was how much I liked him in Wake Up, Sid. Then I watched all his films. That’s how good I found him.”

The American girl in Bollywood just can’t stop raving about Ranbir. “Ranbir really took care of me. He made me feel so comfortable. Not for a minute did I feel like an outsider. If I’ve decided to make a career in Hindi cinema it’s because of Ranbir and Prakashji who never let me feel like an outsider.”

Rajneeti – Movie Review

Starring: Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif, Manoj Bajpai and Naseeruddin Shah
Director: Prakash Jha

It is said that the epic saga of Mahabharata contains all the stories that exist in this world, be it lies, deceit, lust for power, revenge. In short all those that can make a solid impact. Prakash Jha taking a cue from this has set his big canvass film Rajneeti against an Indian political backdrop. But then at the same time he has merged dollops of The Godfatherwithin it. Nonetheless, the end product makes a compelling watch.

Cousins Veerendra Pratap Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) and Prithvi Pratap Singh (Arjun Rampal) are heirs of a powerful political party. But when Prithvi is appointed to take the lead, an angry Veerendra teams up with the backward class leader Sooraj (Ajay Devgan) to plot against Prithvi and evict him from the party. Prithvi’s younger brother Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) who is studying abroad and has no political aspirations gets sucked into the political rivalry between the families. Under the mentoring of senior party and family member Brij Gopal (Nana Patekar), Samar takes charge of the conniving affairs of state to start their own political party, gather funds and get Prithvi contest against Veerendra. What unfolds next as the battle shifts ground to the elections forms the rest of the film.

Like mentioned above, as the film mixes in elements from the Mahabharat, Veerendra’s character is a modern day Duryodhan where as Sooraj is Karan, a valiant soldier but on the wrong side. Brij Gopal played by Nana Patekar is like Krishna, the passive participant of the war who takes Ranbir Kapoor’s Arjun like character to victory with his guidance.

The film is a valiant effort by the master story teller, the multi-time National Award winner filmmaker, Prakash Jha who is at his home ground while making films of political drama genre. Here he is as ably aided by script writer Anjum Rajabali weaving just the right story and screenplay packing in all the treachery and deceit involved with Indian politics. What makes Rajneeti an engaging watch is also the fact that the makers have succeeded in narrating the story like a thriller format.

Jha doesn’t waste time in showing lip synced songs and incorporates them well in the narrative playing them in the background. Camerawork by Sachin Kumar Krishnan is simply superb. The way he has captured those vast mass shots deserves a bow. Although the running time of the film is close to three hours, it doesn’t matter much while watching the film and the credit for it goes to the editor Santosh Mandal. The sound design carries a good impact as well.

Absolutely brilliant performances by every single actor of the mammoth cast, also including those with smaller parts. As expected Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar and Ajay Devgan are at their best. Arjun and Ranbir manage to match up to them as well and deliver a power packed punch. Katrina impresses with her uninhibited act. Sara Thompson as Ranbir’s foreigner girlfriend also leaves an impact in her relatively smaller part. But a performance that may win some awards for sure has been delivered by Manoj Bajpai. He is menacingly good. Shruti Seth, Vinay Apte, Kiran Karmarkar, Chetan Pandit and Nikhila Trikha lend able support.

Rajneeti is an important film in today’s times. It is not to be missed by connoisseurs of good cinemas well as those who forever complain that Hindi cinema offers nothing different.

Neha Dhupia to play a rural lass

Neha Dhupia is one sexy woman, who is extremely comfortable in her skin. She made her debut with Qayamat: City under threat, but it was her role as the sexy oomphmati in Julie, which put her on the map. Though the film was a box office bomb, Neha’s talent was noticed and she went to act in movies directed by acclaimed directors such as Priyadarshan and Anees Bazmi.

Versatile actress that she is, she carried out the comic part in Singh is King and De Dana Dan as well as that of the seductress in Raat Gayi Baat Gayi effortlessly. After winning the prestigious Miss India title in 2002, there was no looking back for this lady. She will also star in the much anticipated Action Replayy, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.

Neha Dhupia will star in the Subhash Kapoor directed With Love to Obama where she has experimented with a completely different genre. She plays the role of the village thug here. It will be really interesting to see Miss Dhupia as a village belle, because the audience is used to watch her strut around the screen in western clothing. The movie will also star Rajat Kapoor and Amol Gupte.

She may not be counted among the the leading actresses of today but with the kind of movies that she is taking up, Neha Dhupia is not far from achieving the status of one. She sure is one determined chick.

Katrina Kaif’s last minute dubbing correction

This is surely the first time in the history of Indian cinema that such a thing has happened. One wrongly-pronounced word in her crucial public speech in Raajneeti had Katrina Kaif almost hysterical with anxiety just days before release.

This is the story of how she returned to dubbing after the film’s entire post-production was done and the film was ready for release. The incorrectly-pronounced word was satta (politics) which came out sounding like satya (truth) in her speech.

Says a source close to the project, “Katrina had worked relentlessly to get her speech right. She had worked on every word until she thought it was polished to perfection. When after seeing the trailers, her friends pointed that the word satta was pronounced as satya. Katrina was aghast..She immediately contacted her director Prakash Jha to get it corrected.”

We’ve all heard read and mulled over Katrina’s determination to get the shudh Hindi-Urdu right in Raajneeti and how she got herself a Hindi tutor etc etc. But the level of her determination to get the speech pattern right in the crucial political speech was so high that Katrina actually corrected one word in the public-speech sequence .

Confirms Katrina, “Yes it’s true. You’ll hear the word satta being said differently in the trailer and in the film. I did correct it much later. It wasn’t easy. But I was determined to get it right.”

Review: Raajneeti

By Hindustan Times

Director: Prakash Jha
Actors: Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee
Rating: ***

Ranbir Kapoor, the younger brother, plays what clichĂ©d cricket commentators would call a “cool customer”. He has a life beyond his immediate family, is least interested in his ancestral business (politics), is settled in with a girlfriend abroad. Were it not for a tragic circumstance, he could continue with his innately quiet, private life.

The elder one (Arjun Rampal), fully enmeshed in the intricacies of his family’s murky trade, is the mercurial dude; given to violent outbursts; his ego, quite easy to prick.

These two brothers Samar and Prithviraj could well be Michael (Al Pacino) and Sonny (James Caan) from the Corleone family in Godfather. Or, their equations may as much match the ‘80s siblings Rajiv (reserved), and Sanjay (rabid), from the Gandhi dynasty.

After his father’s assassination, young Samar (Ranbir, first-rate) slips in like a fish into his family’s dirty pond. This transition appears too hastily unexplained for someone who’d been pursuing for years a PhD in Victorian literature before this.

Bloodlines in this Rajput family tree are too complicated to recount. Suffice it to know, for simplicity’s sake, the conflict is roughly over who's the heir to a political legacy: the eldest son (Manoj Bajpayee); or the younger brother and, given such a situation’s arisen, his progenies (Prithviraj, Samar).

The latter also share a step-brother (Ajay Devgn), a locally popular Dalit youth leader. But no one knows this yet. He’s Karn from the Mahabharat, picked up and elevated in the rival Kaurav camp. His birth also honours a popular Bollywood tradition: random one-night stands inevitably lead to instant pregnancies.

Nana Patekar, the Krishn like figure, manipulates from the backroom. In rajneeti, or politics, he says, “Faisle sahi ya ghalat nahin hote. Unka mol toh maksad poora karne ke liye hota hai. Chahe jaise bhi ho. (Decisions taken are never right or wrong. Their worth is restricted to meeting an immediate end: by hook, or by crook).”

Jha, the director, makes for an odd, relatively grass-root politician among mainstream filmmakers, if you may. Back in his home state Bihar; he’s known to be close to its progressive CM Nitish Kumar. He’s himself fought the general elections twice, both as a party candidate, and an independent from a hinterland constituency. Outside of a script from Karunanidhi (once a screenwriter himself), I suspect, we’re unlikely to get a more authentically insider account of the intrigues within state politics, suited still for blockbuster cinema. Jha also knows a thing or two about producing shock and awe on screen. This helps.

It’s clearly possible, the filmmaker smartly suggests here, to set the Mahabharat around India’s present democracy, given the business of competitive politics is just as dynastic. The political party itself is the new monarchy.

He deftly shows us “the party’s” abuse of news media, business, caste, qom (a religious vote-bank), coalitions, law courts, police, bureaucracy, even marriages and friendships: all to satiate a power trip. None of the actors assembled on stage let him down: right from an unusually inspired Rampal to his powerful, polar opposite Bajpayee.

What does the film in more than slightly is, but, the sheer commercial relentlessness of its drama. There’s absolutely no relief, respite, rhythm, or ‘thehrav’ (for lack of a better English word). Impact of no tragedy calms this picture down. Introspection is wasteful; redemption, unnecessary. Eventually, when deaths become so cheap, so should your cinema ticket.

All characters finally discover for themselves their own awkwardly lame conclusions within enough sub-plots to pack in an entire Godfather trilogy. A state poll is the ultimate Armageddon.

It appears these politicians will either never contest another election, or the filmmakers will never make another film on politics. Editing of thought, let alone scenes, may not have been a poor idea in retrospect.

Jha’s GangaaJal (2003, on vigilante justice) and Apaharan (2005, on politics behind a kidnapping and ransom industry) were, in comparison, finely focused works. The ambition of its sweep screws this up alone. This problem has as much to do with silly diktats of a mainstream multi-starrer as with the size of the Hindu epic the film supposes to borrow from.

There's a reason Mahabharat was a television series. Shyam Benegal could brilliantly adapt it around India’s corporate boardroom, only for his contained minimalism (Kalyug, 1981).

What you sense here instead then is an over-dramatic, over-written screenplay: an over-boiled egg.

Just to let you in on a mental note I made smilingly stepping out of this film’s interval: “You so know it when you’re watching one of the most powerful Bollywood dramas ever!” I wish I could say that for the rest of the movie. Well. Halfway there then, I guess.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan unveils Pritish Nandy’s Book Again

Shoaib Malik joined Salman’s team against Pakistan

This has got to be the strangest and most tantalizing marriage of two opposing sides ever. First, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik comes to India and marries its hottest tennis player Sania Mirza. Then before we know it the pair moves to the no-man’s land in Dubai where Malik joins hands with Salman Khan to play against Pakistan!

At the Dubai sports city on Thursday may 27 Shoaib created cricketing history by playing in Salman Khan’s Indian team against his fellow team- mates led by shoaib akhtar who played against Salman’s ‘being human’ team from Bollywood.

Apparently, Shoaib was reluctant to play in Salman’s team. It was wife Sania who convinced him.

Says a source from salman’s team, “Sania Mirza is a huge Salman fan. When Salman asked her husband to play on his team Shoaib Malik was naturally reluctant. But then Sania’s persuasive powers over her husband worked. When it came to Salman, Sania wouldn’t hear a ‘No’ even from her own husband.”

That’s how Malik made cricketing history by playing against his countrymen.

Arbaaz khan verifies the historic occurrence. However he wouldn’t like to attribute any political motives to Salman’s charitable game in Dubai.

Says Arbaaz, “It was a friendly match with mixed teams nothing like playing for or against. All in good spirit and for fun.”

However with Pakistan waiting for ‘Sania Bhabhi’ to show up and Shoaib Bhai giving in to his wife’s fondness for Salman by playing against Pakistan could it be a wrong move both politically and athletically?

John and Bipasha part ways on Colombo

john abraham bipasha basu 200x298 Love and ideology make strange bedfellows. While other star couples from Bollywood were off to Colombo for four days of fun, frolic and, er.. films at IIFA, John and Bipasha decided to go their separate ways on the issue of Tamilian protests against Bollywood’s presence in Colombo.

Says a source close to John and Bipasha, “Bipasha proceeded to Colombo at the last minute without John. This was the first time she attended this annual jamboree without John and no, she wasn’t sulking over the matter. Bipasha had no choice but to attend because she had to represent her film Lamhaa in Colombo.”

Initially Bipasha did try to convince John to accompany her. But keeping in mind the Tamilian sentiments he opted out.

Says a mutual friend of the couple, “John is very clear about being politically correct. He is a Malyalee and feels very strongly about South Indian issues. So even if it meant not spending quality time with Bipasha, John decided to forego the pleasure trip.”

When contacted, John tried to brush off his absence at Colombo. “I had work in Mumbai so I didn’t go. I’m completely immersed in pre-production work for Nishikant Kamat’s film.I can’t think of anything else at the moment.”

Incidentally Colombo was one of the major locations suggested by Nishikant Kamat. John politely suggested a digression.

Aftab Shivdasani’s Injury Puts Sports Flick Behind

Aftab Shivdasani’s plans to star in a cricket film have been postponed.

It was meant to be a very hush-hush sports film revolving around the game of cricket.

Ironically it was a game of cricket that caused a delay in Aftab’s very secret plans to play cricket for his own film.

Not only is his ambitious sports film delayed Aftab Shivdasani who left on Thursday morning for the IIFA in Colombo would have to skip the benefit cricket match because of the hand injury he suffered while playing cricket for Salman Khan’s Being Human team in Dubai last week.

Wincing in pain Aftab explains, “Thankfully it isn’t a fracture. Just a small crack in the bone and soft-tissue damage. But that’s painful enough. I’ve to rest my hand for at least ten days. But I’m off to IIFA, though I can’t play the cricket match.”

Replaying the incident leading to the injury Aftab says, “I was batting in Dubai against Pakistani actors when I got a beamer .I tried to fend it off with my hand. The ball hit the bone on the side of the palm of my right hand.”

The pain was so acute that Aftab had to be rushed to the hospital. “It was painful. I went directly from the stadium to the hospital for an x-ray. There it was discovered I have a small crack in the finger. I’ve to wear a splint for two weeks.”

Work In Progress for Jism 2

There been news for a long time about a sequel to 2003’s boldest movie Jism. The sequel which has so far been titled as Jism 2 was announced way back in 2008. The grapevine was abuzz with the news of the John Abraham Bipasha Basu starrer then.

But then we haven’t seen the movie anywhere in the theatres. Finally, today Mahesh Bhatt revealed on the social networking site Twitter, that the screenplay of the movie is currently being written. “Working on Jism 2: We need to give our screenplays the time they deserve to be written.”

It seems that Mahesh and Pooja are not ready to rush the project. Mahesh also stated his opinion saying, “Rushing is not always the best game plan.”

Meanwhile, Pooja who had directed Jism will be directing the sequel as well. The buzz is that she wants to make this a movie in 3D. If so, Jism 2 will be the first adult film to be 3D in Bollywood.

Jism 2 has been written by Rafique and concentrates on infidelity just like Jism. There were also reports stating that the sequel will be introducing a few new faces to the film industry.

As long as Mahesh provides the audience with a quality sequel that is worth the wait we are sure that the audience won’t mind.

Sonali’s heart says no to a Bollywood Return

She’s married with a kid, yet Sonali Bendre can put the leading Bollywood ladies to shame. The trouble though, with our industry, is that once an actress steps into motherhood, she can no longer figure in the wish list of producers.

Actors like Bendre then look for a career in television. The pretty Marathi girl has been a regular figure on the small screen right from her Indian Idol days. Presently, she’s back to adjudicating the second season of India’s Got Talent – Khoj 2.

The problem that such actors face is that the media deliberately tries running them down by presciently asking the proverbial question, ‘When will we see you back in films?

When she came to Indian Idol, Bendre had a valid excuse to dock this query. “I have to look after my new born,” Bendre defended her absence from Bollywood.

This time around, the media cleverly tweaked the question. “You couldn’t take films earlier because of your young one, but your child must have grown now, so aren’t you looking towards coming back to films?

Sonali broke into a smile before saying, “My kid is still small. Honestly speaking, if I have to return to films, the feeling to do it ought to come from the heart. At the moment, my heart says no to it. Besides, a TV show requires you to give just 1-2 days in week. All you have to do is come, express your opinion and get paid for it. For me it’s matter of pride that my opinion is valued.”

We’ve heard it straight from the heart. So, until the heart gives in, it’s pointless asking Sonali, ‘What’s your next film?’
