Emraan's 'Raaz' outshines 'Slumdog...' at box-office

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Despite the hype and global applause that Danny Boyle's multiple award-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” has garnered, the film has failed to surpass the box office collections of Bollywood thriller “Raaz - The Mystery Continues”, which released on the same day.

While Oscar nominated “Slumdog Millionaire”, which is about a rags-to-riches story of a slum dweller, grossed Rs.135 million, “Raaz - The Mystery Continues”, starring Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut raked in Rs.210 million within the first four days of their release.

"Raaz..." is produced by Vishesh Films and Mohit Suri directed it.

“No one and nothing can stop a great product from doing its magic on the audience. All the audience cares about is whether the film appeals to their sensibilities and is entertaining at the same time. Our film did just that and the figures speak for themselves," said Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films.

According to co-producer Mahesh Bhatt, the weekend collection of “Raaz - The Mystery Continues” is equivalent to the first week collections of their last year's offering “Jannat”.

Even though the figures speak otherwise for the success of “Slumdog Millionaire” in India, Fox STAR Studios, the film's co-producers are still positive about the response to the film.

“For us, this is a great beginning - 'Slumdog Millionaire' has become the fourth biggest Hollywood film ever,” said Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India.

“As we had expected, for a non star driven film 'Slumdog…' has seen a phenomenal pick up. The word of mouth on the streets is exceptionally positive,” he added.

“Slumdog Millionaire” has crossed a box office collection of Rs.3.6 billion worldwide.
