Pinki to attend Oscar ceremony

LUCKNOW: Eight-year-old Pinki, the protagonist of the Oscar nominated documentary "Smile Pinki", moved a step forward in realising her dream of attending the glittering awards function with the authorities issuing her a passport.

Dr Subodh Kumar Singh of the G S Memorial Plastic Surgery hospital, Varanasi, who performed an operation on Pinki's cleft lip to set it right on March 19, 2007, said that the passport formalities were completed yesterday and now they will travel to Delhi on Monday to get the visa.

Smile Train, a charity organisation which had brought Pinki to Varanasi where the corrective surgery was performed on the eight-year-old so that she could be saved from ridicule in her remote Purva Khokia village in Mirzapur district is helping her out in the process.

Though there was an offer to take Pinki's entire family, including her mother and other siblings, to the Oscar ceremony, only the father of the girl, Rajendra Sonekar, would be accompanying her, tentatively on February 16, Singh said.

After the completion of the formalities for the visit, Singh would be training Pinki and her father, who converse only in Hindi, to handle media exposure and other basic things.

Pinki's story has been documented in a 39 minute film which has been nominated for Oscar honours along with 'The final match" and 'The witness from Balcony" in the documentary category.
