Oscar winners A R Rahman
Can Oscar winners A R Rahman s music and Resul Pookutty s sound salvage Blue, the most expensive Hindi film made this year? Though the film took a great opening - Rs 51 crore gross worldwide in the opening weekend, according to producers Ashtavinayak - analysts and insiders doubt whether the film will be able to get returns on investment. Made at a budget touching Rs 100 crore at pre-meltdown rates, analysts said a preposterous storyline and some terrible acting may have put paid to the industry s grand revival plans. Bollywood, which has been having a bad year with only a handful of hits, had been banking on Blue and two other releases All the Best and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna to beat box-office blues. Ghajini, last year s biggest hit, which was released with 1,450 prints, grossed Rs 90 crore worldwide in the opening weekend. Shree Ashtavinayak s Blue , released with 1,800 prints across 2, 250 screens, saw the highest occupancy at 60-80% at most multiplexes. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgan s All The Best and UTV s Main Aurr Mrs Khanna saw a decent occupancy of 50% and 40%, respectively. Prakhar Joshi, head, programming, PVR Cinemas said Blue grossed Rs 2.25 crore over the weekend. Devang Sampat, senior VP, Cinemax, said while Blue and All The Best saw 65-70% occupancy, it was Main Aurr Mrs Khanna that saw a low 40% occupancy rate. We have given equal treatment to all the films and are running 450 shows across our property with 150 per day. Together, the three movies have garnered around Rs 3 crore across our chain. Blue and All The Best have got the highest collections of around Rs 1. 20 crore each, while Main Aurr Mrs Khanna grossed around Rs 60 lakh, he added. Blue grossed around Rs 6.50 crore on the day of release, whereas its Telugu version garnered around Rs 25 lakh. Analysts said occupancy rates of all three films had dropped by 20-30% on Saturday, and that the poor content of all three may have given Dharma Productions Wake Up Sid a fresh lease of life which saw 85-90% occupancies at many multiplexes. Meanwhile, the weekend occupancy of Blue, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna , All The Best at Inox stood at 54%, 61% and 30%, respectively. The only comedy flick of the festive season All The Best saw a better response than the much hyped Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, which performed below expectations at the box office and found it difficult to impress audiences even on day one. While, All The Best gathered Rs 1.80 crore on day one, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna saw a lower collection of Rs 1.25 crore.
