17th Star Screen Awards: Nominations screened & selected

The nominations for the Karbonn Mobiles 17th Annual Star Screen Awards are out. Take a close look at the list to know how 2010 notched up Indian cinema’s allure with new trends, talents and all the glamour that goes with it

Bollywood releases of 2010 have been an interesting mix of drama, comedy, satire and masala — all showcasing some unusual storylines. Hence, the nominations list of this year’s first film awards, Karbonn Mobiles 17th Annual Star Acreen Awards, has naturally thrown up some surprises. With the success of a number of small-budget films emerging as this year’s biggest phenomemon, big-budget movies such as Raajneeti and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai are competing for the Best Film Award with smaller films, such as Udaan and Love Sex Aur Dhokha. While debut director Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan has the maximum number of nominations at 14, it is followed by Abhishek Chaubey’s Ishqiya at 13 nominations. Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s blockbuster hit Dabangg has 12 nominations.

“It took seven years and much effort before the film finally got made. I was glad enough that Udaan was appreciated by critics and the audience but 14 nominations at the Screen awards have come as a great surprise,” said Motwane. His competitor for the Best Director trophy Maneesh Sharma, says that despite Yash Raj Films’ backing, his Band Baaja Baarat was close to being written off before its release. “Unlike most other YRF productions, it didn’t boast of big names. But to be nominated for the Best Film Award is overwhelming,” says Sharma.
