Owners of single-screen cinema to go on strike

MUMBAI: About 650 single-screen cinema halls across the state will go on a week-long protest strike from March 25 to March 31. The cinema owners are demanding that entertainment tax be reduced in Maharashtra.

President of Cinema Owners' and Exhibitors' Association RV Vidhani said, "We have been appealing to the government for two years now to reduce the tax. We have even mailed several letters to the authorities but have received no response. We don't know if this pressure is going to work in our favour, but we only want the people and the government to know that single-screen owners are struggling for survival.

Multiplexes get concessions and we single screen owners have been paying entertainment tax since 1923 and no relief till today. We pay as high as 45 per cent. There used to be about 1080 cinema halls in Maharashtra which has now come down to just 650.''

Distributor and exhibitor Ramesh Sippy said that all single screen theatres will be remain shut for seven days.

He said, " Rajasthan has just abolished entertainment tax , Punjab too there is no entertainment tax even Tamil Nadu it is very low but here in Maharashtra which is the birthplace of cinema the entertainment tax is as high as 45 per cent which is killing our business.''

The single screen owners have been asking for reduction of entertainment tax from the time multiplexes came into existence and damaged their business
