Singer Shaan named as Tobacco Control Ambassador

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has named well-known Bollywood singer Shaan as the Tobacco Control Ambassador of India.

At a function here yesterday, Shaan dedicated himself to the cause and pledged to do all he could to stand up against the tobacco menace.

Shaan’s new music single titled "Life se Panga Mat Le Yar" was also released on the occasion. The new track is targeted at youth and sends a strong message that life without tobacco is a life worth living.

The launch event was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in association with the Salaam Bombay Foundation at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

The music video has been shot at the Kala Chowki basti, Parel in Mumbai. The 3.48 minute track has lyrics written by Rekha Nigam. The video shows Shaan dancing with children encouraging them to take all problems in their stride and not to make things worse by consuming tobacco.

Hence, tobacco use is a "panga" they can live without. The entire video has a very pro-life stance, is youth centric and speaks of their dreams and aspirations.

An official press release said the Ministry would promote the music video through various television and music channels and FM radio stations as a public service message.

Worldwide, 1.6 million people die every year due to regular use of tobacco, bidis and cigarettes.

Mr B K Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, said the Government was seriously implementing the Tobacco Control Programme, but admitted complete success was still some distance away.

He said tobacco usage was deep rooted in Indian society and the menace could be overcome only through greater awareness and people's participation in the anti-tobacco programme.
