Luck By Chance

Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Dimple Kapadia, Isha Sharwani, Rishi Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Hrithik Roshan
Writer-Director: Zoya Akhtar
Rating: ****

It is easy to fall in love with every performance in this intimate yet generic insider's look at the workings of the entertainment industry.

But the one that I carried home with me was Sheeba Chadha. A marvel of subtle writing, Sheeba plays a podgy, cunning but simple-hearted producer's sister-in-law whose husband (Aly Khan) is carrying on with a struggling starlet right under her naïve eyes.

One not-so-pleasant afternoon, Sheeba barges into her husband's van and sees a red-nosed bleary-eyed Konkona Sen Sharma (who has just been told she doesn't get a role she has been waiting all her career for). Sheeba senses what's going on. But she quickly digresses her mind from her husband's extra-marital affair.

The industry is filled with such deliberately desensitised people who function within the fickle and frighteningly flamboyant film industry with gut-wrenching self-delusion.

"Luck By Chance" -- a truly out-of-the-box outstanding work of subtle, sly, satirical and whispering art -- is filled with people whom you're bound to have met in the fetid corridors of Bollywood or the Hindi film industry, as the star-mother Dimple Kapadia insists on calling it.

Never before has the film industry been perceived with such intuitively internalised abundance. A subtle splendour galvanised by performances that range from the credible to the incredible takes the narrative to pinnacles of expressiveness.

The performances help to ignite the characters into states of subtle yet vivid shades. The ambitious mother-daughter (Dimple-Isha Sharwani) pair, the strugglers, wannabes and losers...oh yes, every character in "Luck By Chance" possesses a luminously lived-in quality, bringing to the surface feelings, thoughts and images that are normally not brought out on screen.

Every player -- parodic, poignant and pitched perfectly -- makes savage fun of the very foibles that they probably practice with masterful manipulative hands in real life.

Zoya Akhtar gets into the star space without a moment's aggression in her storytelling. The moments that define the relationships are built stealthily. This is a world that every person in the Mumbai film industry (for Dimple's sake, let's not call it Bollywood!) knows first-hand.

The debutante director occupies that space with unostentatious spirit, nurturing interludes between characters (the two strugglers Farhan Akhtar-Konkona, producer-wife Rishi Kapoor-Juhi Chawla, ideologically separated co-actors Farhan-Arjun Mathur) with the cautious care of a mother who wants to bring up her child with the right values without drawing attention to her nurturing acumen.

This is a work of tender, subtle care with moments whose immense value strikes you after the wonderfully conversational dialogues (Javed Akhtar at his expressive best) have had their say.

At heart, "Luck By Chance" is a story of one man's plunge into the morass of compromise as he heads towards his dreams. Farhan gets what can only called another chance to do the histrionic dance. As he goes from wide-eyed wannabe to a morally devalued creature, the narrative charts his course with savage humour.

Farhan's scenes with the nakedly adulatory star daughter(Isha playing dumb dead-on) are designed as a blend of satirical erotica and ideological annihilation. Farhan gets it right.

This is a work that oozes outstanding acting talent from every nook and corner. Whether it's Aly as a on-the-move producer or Arjun as a struggling actor who would rather struggle in theatre than compromise, every character plays a person you've met if you've ever been a part of the Mumbai film industry.

Super stand-out performances by Rishi, Dimple, Sheeba, Hrithik Roshan(as a superstar on the skids) and of course, Konkona, whose best performance this is.

On the deficit side, (yes even a film of such high order must face the music) the narrative with its inbuilt jokes and references is too much a Bollywood insider's job, largely inaccessible to the common man who wouldn't know the name of Ranbir Kapoor's secretary and couldn't care less.

On most levels, "Luck By Chance" stands tall and luminous, portraying the world of arclights with a synthesis of style, sympathy and substance that is the opposite of the synthetic way the world of showbiz is generally portrayed in cinema.

What stays with you are moments like the one where the struggling hero approaches the once glamorous star mother at a party and wins her over... a moment that builds up into a muffled explosion of ambitious scheming achieved at a place where the sound of broken hearts is inaudible.

There were rumours of their split last year. However, all's well.

Suri is currently hogging the limelight for hit film "Raaz: The Mystery Continues".

'Victory' should have been reviewed by cricket lovers

Mumbai, Miffed with critics for panning his "Victory", director Ajitpal Mangat alleges that his film was badly treated by reviewers as they disliked cricket and the lead actor Hurman S. Baweja.

"Critics are very important nowadays when watching a film is such an expensive thing. And, I think, a film about cricket should've been reviewed by critics who at least didn't dislike the game," Mangat told IANS in an interview.

"Most reviews are talking about Hurman's performance. There's more to 'Victory' than the leading man's performance. My film shouldn't have been panned just because Hurman's first film didn't do well. You can't poison the audiences' mind against the film," he added.

The debutant director asserted that top-notch cricketers were impressed with the cricket scenes.

"Some critics said the cricket scenes were not shot well. That's not what Yuvraj Singh, Jayasurya and Sachin Tendulkar said," Mangat said.

Excerpts:

Q: How much do you think Zoya Akhtar's "Luck By Chance" affected your film?

A: Honestly, I thought my film won't get affected because we belonged to different genres. But I was apprehensive about the two heroes (Hurman and Farhan Akhtar) being compared.

Q: You mean because both Hurman and Farhan were doing their post-debut films?

A: Yes, and compared unfavourably. But for reasons completely unknown to me the critics decided to take off on my film. Why? Because I'm not from the industry and I don't fraternise with big stars?

My film shouldn't have been panned just because Hurman's first film didn't do well. Most reviews are talking about Hurman's performance. There's more to 'Victory' than the leading man's performance. You can't poison audiences' mind against the film.

Q: You're giving too much important to reviewers?

A: Critics are very important nowadays when watching a film is such an expensive thing. And I think a film about cricket should've been reviewed by critics who at least didn't dislike the game.

Q: So what worked against your film, cricket or Hurman?

A: I definitely think it was Hurman. Some critics said the cricket scenes were not shot well. That's not what Yuvraj Singh, Jayasurya and Sachin Tendulkar said. I had told Hurman that the critics would be very harsh because I'm an outsider. They hate my lead actor for some reason.

Q: So you think "Victory" would've been better received without Hurman?

A: I can't say that. All I can say is I'm happy I chose him. Hurman is a fine actor and he has done the cricket scenes very effectively. Sections decided to hate the film even before seeing it.

Q: Apparently you and Hurman were at loggerheads during the film's making?

A: Not true at all. We had absolutely no problem with one another. I don't know why my film was punished. I don't belong to a film family. I don't know about the workings of the industry. I thought filmmaking was only about making a film. Whoever has seen "Victory" has liked it. Unfortunately, not enough people were encouraged to see the film. The critics were terribly harsh on me.

Q: Do you think "Luck By Chance" was treated too kindly?

A: I haven't seen Zoya's film. I'm sure she has made a good film. But why was my film rammed? All of us have slogged hard on "Victory". Why are you ripping it when I know I've made a good film? Just because my film doesn't have a superstar in the lead? Just because my actors are not media savvy? Just because I'm not close to powerful sections of the industry and don't wine and dine with the who's who?

Whatever the reason, I'm very hurt. I made a film on cricket and we all love the game. So why slam a film on the game?

Bappa Lahiri's 'Jai Veeru' old wine in new bottle (Music Review)

Film: "Jai Veeru"
Music Director: Bappa Lahiri; Lyricist: Sameer and Omar Inayat; Singers: Hard Kaur, Rema Lahiri, Mauli Dave, Javed Ali, Raja Hasan, Mika Singh, Tulsi Kumar, Saim, Omar Inayat
Rating: **

His father Bappi Lahiri was known as the Disco King of Bollywood. Now Bappa Lahiri makes his debut as a solo composer with "Jai Veeru". Despite his young age, his album lacks freshness and novelty.

"Agre ka ghagra" is an item song and it seems Bappa tries to recreate another "Kajra re". The song falls flat despite Mauli Dave's impressive vocals and ample support by other singers - Javed Ali and Raja Hasan.

In order to amalgamate various genres in the soundtrack, Lahiri's next "Aisa lashkara" is a hip-hop number crooned by Hard Kaur and Reema Lahiri. Though the composer has tried to keep the tempo rising, the song doesn't strike a chord with the listeners.

"Dhun Lagi" turns out to be a number which lacks originality and seems to have been heard before. Raja Hasan sings well but the song with a folk twist fails to create an impact owing to its ordinary lyrics and typical musical arrangements.

The song has an electro mix and a dance mix, but neither version adds value to the original.

Next is "Sufi", which can be described as the best song in the album. The poignant and romantic track leaves a mark on music buffs. Saim and Tulsi Kumar have worked well behind the mike and by filling this Sufi rock ballad with emotions.

The rock version of "Sufi" adds to the original number and takes the song to another level. The rock-musical feel with zany electric guitar strumming, effectively rendered vocals and thriving percussions making it apt for the special rock-concert feel.

"Tennu le" brings with it an altogether different flavour with a mix of English and Punjabi lyrics. A hip-hop track, sung by Omar Inayat, it sounds like Punjabi-British pop songs. The number is high on beats, making it good for the dance floor.

But, overall, "Jai Veeru" doesn't impress and has too many dull moments. The songs lack freshness and stick to old formulae that don't work any more.

Comedy isn't my favourite genre: Aftab Shivdasani

Mumbai, Aftab Shivdasani has starred in hit comedies like "Masti", "Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega" and "Hungama", but says comedy is not his favourite genre.

"It's a misconception that comedy is my favourite genre. No, it's not. It's just that I am most comfortable with doing comedy. Also, it is a safer genre", said Aftab who would be beginning 2009 with the comedy "Aloo Chaat".

His continued presence in thrillers and dramatic movies like "Kasoor", "Pyaasa", "Footpath", "Jaane Hoga Kya", "Red" and "Speed" does indicate his affinity towards the darker side of things as well.

"That's true, I actually love thrillers. Give me an intense love story and I would love to do that. And why just a love story or a thriller? I would be happy doing a full-on action flick as well", Aftab told IANS. His upcoming films like "Acid Factory" and "Kambakht Ishq" have a fair dose of action as well.

Aftab, who is looking at a busy year ahead with yet another comedy, "Daddy Cool", being one of his four major releases, wants himself to be considered as a versatile actor.

"As an actor, I like doing different things and this is the reason why I keep juggling around with genres. Though both my releases of 2008, 'Money Hai Toh Honey Hai' and 'De Taali', were comedies, a year before that there was quite some variety in the form of 'Speed', 'Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee', 'Red' and a short story in 'Dus Kahaniyaan'", said Aftab.

However, for the moment he is looking forward to the release of "Aloo Chaat", which is directed by Robby Grewal, who has earlier made "Samay - When Time Strikes" and "Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar".

"'Aloo Chaat' is a good film to be a part of", he said. "It is a very clean family entertainer. A fun film, it is quite character-driven. In fact, I can assure that you can take your entire family along without feeling awkward even once during the screening. It is a perfect recipe for feel good cinema. Robby has really made the film quite well and I am very much looking forward to the audience response."

All set to release March 13, "Aloo Chaat" stars popular TV actress Aamna Shariff and Linda Arsenio as Aftab's leading ladies.

Also starring Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Manoj Pahwa and Sanjay Mishra in principal roles, "Aloo Chaat" should see a start in its satellite and web promotions by the coming weekend.

Hollywood a better place for percussionists: Bickram Ghosh

Kolkata, Feb 12 (PTI) After working with Pete Lockett, the music composer of Bond films, in his new album, top Indian percussionist Bickram Ghosh is now looking forward to a future in Hollywood.

Ghosh's latest album 'The Kingdom of Rhythm', which is poised for release this month, features Lockett who has composed the background score for many Bond films.

"Hollywood is a better place to be in as a percussionist as you get recognition there. In Bollywood that doesn't happen," he told PTI.

Citing the example of Lockett, he said, "Pete plays on the Bond soundtracks and gets screen credit which does not happen in India," he pointed out.

Ghosh shot to limelight after he worked in Pandit Ravi Shankar's album 'Full Circle' that won the Grammy Award for 2004.

Known for his collaborations with international musicians, including ex-Beatle George Harrison, Yosi Levy, Ilan Salem, Khaled Kouen and Mstilav Rostropovich, Ghosh also played for Harrison's Grammy nominated album 'Brainwashed'.

He is the first tabla maestro-ever to be offered an endorsement by 'Remo', the biggest drum-heads company in the world.

Bevy of beauties at 'Billu' premiere in South Africa

Durban, Feb 11 (IANS) Priyadarshan's comedy "Billu", which features a large number of top-notch Bollywood actresses, saw bevy of Indian origin beauties from 25 countries at its premiere here.

The 25 young women have assembled here to vie for the Miss India Worldwide 2009 title at the Suncoast Entertainment resort here on Saturday night. And they were excited to take a break from rehearsals Tuesday evening to join local celebrities at the premiere of "Billu", hosted by young South African Indian cinema magnate Abie Moosa.

While Lara Dutta is cast opposite Irrfan, who plays the title role, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone feature with Shah Rukh Khan in three different item numbers in the comedy.

"It will be delightful to have a complement of such lovely Indian ladies from across the globe to complement the Indian beauties on the screen," Moosa told IANS.

In keeping with the traditions of the Miss India Worldwide Pageant, started by Dharmatma Saran of the US nearly two decades ago, the contestants have been engaged in a series of visits to local communities and welfare projects for several days now.

On Monday, they were shown the massive Hare Krishna Temple in the huge Indian township of Chatsworth, which has become a popular tourist attraction.

Many of them expressed surprise that there were so many Indians in South Africa, and even that they had been here for nearly 150 years. "It is also wonderful to see the huge cultural diversity in South Africa," said Miss India Australia, Kanchan Verma, a health professional.

Miss India Oman, geneticist Shruti Dilip, said she had watched an impressive Indian dance by "a pint-sized" Indian dancer when they visited historic Gandhian sites in Pietermaritzburg, where the young lawyer Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi started his path to becoming the Mahatma after being kicked off a train by a white conductor.

Miss India Singapore, Asmaa Pandit, a business development consultant, and Miss India India Deepthi Varughese said that Durban with its large Indian population felt "just like being in India".

This is the second consecutive year that South Africa is hosting the Miss India Worldwide Pageant after Shagun Sarabhai of India was crowned the winner in Lenasia, the huge Indian township south of Johannesburg, at a gala event last year. Sarabhai will hand over the crown to her successor on Valentine's Day as another former winner from India, Fareisa Joemmanbaks of Suriname, looks on.

Saran said that he definitely had a soft spot for South Africa: "I have been coming here since 1991, when South Africa was just beginning to regain its international stature ahead of the first democratic elections, and the local franchisee for the Miss India Worldwide Pageant, Farook Khan, started it off here."

Saran said from just 12 countries participating in the initial event, this has now more than doubled, and the high standard of entries was most gratifying as young women in the Diaspora gained the international recognition denied to so many of their forebears.

Shah Rukh to invite barbers, hairstylists for 'Billu' premiere

Mumbai, Feb 11 (IANS) In a move to appease the Hairdressers' Associations of Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan is planning to invite various barbers and hairstylists for the premiere of "Billu", which was earlier titled "Billu Barber".

"As far as I know, Shah Rukh is planning a premiere for the various barbers and hairdressers' associations, so they'd see and know that the film doesn't ridicule them in any way. In fact, the film is a homage to the hair-cutting technique. I can't understand how there can be a protest about the film or its title without anyone seeing the film," Priyadarshan told IANS.

According to Priyadarshan, Shah Rukh is not inviting friends from the industry for the screening.

The film was earlier titled "Billu Barber", but when Hairdressers' Associations of Mumbai objected to the use of the word "barber" in the title, Shah Rukh, who is producing the film and making a guest appearance, decided to change it.

"I'm in Chennai. Shah Rukh Khan tells me all the posters hoarding with credits will blacken out the word 'barber'. If it was hurting anyone's sentiments, I'm okay by it," Priyadarshan said.

He wonders how the word 'barber' could be okay in other languages and not in Hindi.

"Does it mean half the Indian population is not put off by the title and the other half is upset about it? I don't understand the controversy. And I've left it entirely to Shah Rukh to deal with it."

The director has no plans of being in Mumbai for the release of "Billu". "I've done my best. And Irrfan Khan in the title role is the best homage that can be paid to any profession."

Priyan does wonder, and so do we, if we as a collective nation protest too much.

Irrfan Khan plays the title role and is paired with Lara Dutta in the film, which is releasing Friday. Shah Rukh will make a guest appearance along with Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.

'Dev D' strikes gold at box office

New Delhi, After creating a buzz among audiences with its grunge soundtrack and promos, Anurag Kashyap's "Dev D", a modern take on "Devdas", struck gold at the box office by raking in Rs.95 million at the opening weekend.

The inclusion of real life cases like the MMS scandal at Delhi Public School and the BMW hit and run accident in the movie is luring the audiences, say film experts.

"'Dev D' has proven its mettle by pulling in audiences in hordes - especially youngsters. The film has selling material in terms of content. Incidents like the DPS MMS scandal, the BMW case and colloquial language has further led to its triumph at the box office," Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor, told IANS.

Releasing after a dull week that saw "Luck By Chance" and "Victory", Kashyap's film opened to positive reviews and was houseful at the weekend. Produced by UTV Spotboy and Bindass, "Dev D" stars Abhay Deol with newcomers Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin.

Girish Johar, associate vice-president of UTV Motion Pictures, said: "'Dev D' is one of our premium products and it has managed to generate a very good hype among our target audience (youth). We are hoping it will have a long run at the box office."

Kashyap's contemporary take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel has sidelined simultaneous releases "Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye" and "Chal Chala Chal".

"The other two releases 'Mere Khwabon…' and 'Chal Chala Chal' have been total failures. They are only gap fillers," said Mahajan.

"Mere Khwabon…", which has Arbaaz Khan, Randeep Hooda and Raima Sen in the lead, was snubbed by the audiences and couldn't garner more than five percent collection. Helmed by debutante director Madhureeta Anand, the film has been co-produced by PVR Pictures and Madhureeta's company Ekaa Films Pvt Ltd.

The budget for "Dev D" and "Mere Khwabon…' was the same. The producers invested around Rs.60 million excluding the publicity costs. In terms of prints, "Dev D" was released on more than 300 screens globally, "Mere Khwabon…" hit around 200 screens.

"As for 'Mere Khwabon…', it was a non-starter since the beginning and had zero buzz about it. The movie opened to empty houses and the weak content only made it worse. Ditto for 'Chal Chala Chal' that was a fringe release," said a source from Mumbai.

Govinda starrer "Chal Chala Chal", which was directed by T.K. Rajeev Kumar, too failed to impress the movie buffs. The producers of "Chal Chala Chal" refused to divulge any details regarding the movie that released after a deferred delay of about two years since 2007.

"'Dev D' is all set to be the second big hit of 2009 after 'Raaz - The Mystery Continues'. It breaks the very stereotype of the legend of 'Devdas' and that is where it scores the winning goal," added the source.

On the whole, "Dev D" has fair business chances till Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Billu" and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6" hit the screens Feb 13 and Feb 20, respectively

Amitabh Bachchan to play superstar in 'The Actor'

Mumbai, Amitabh Bachchan is set to play a superstar named Ashmit Bhargava in Kushan Nandy's "The Actor", which incorporates many incidents from the Big B's life, making it his most autobiographical film to date.

"Yes, I wrote 'The Actor' for Mr. Bachchan, along with two writer-friends Kiran Shyam Shroff and Ghalib Asad," Kushan told IANS.

Confirming the news, Amitabh said: "Yes, I'm doing a film for Pritish Nandy (Kushan's father). The details you'll have to get from him."

The film is being produced by Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) and will go on floors in the next few months.

Nandy and Amitabh got together for director Sanjay Gupta's "Kaante" in 2002, but after that there were reports of a rift created between them by a third party that didn't want the two to work together.

"I wouldn't like to go into the past, or comment on our relationship. Amitabh and I go back a long, long way. I've known him from long before the troublemakers were born. It was just a matter of the right vehicle for the amazing actor. When my son came up with 'The Actor', I knew this was it. I immediately approached Amitabh. We met several times and he agreed."

The rest of the cast is now being finalised.

"But getting the principal part right was imperative," said Nandy. "I don't think anyone else could've played Ashmit Bhargava the way Kushan wrote the character. The protagonist has to be an icon who's about 55-60 years old, portraying what's according to the script the greatest actor playing the biggest role of his life."

So are the identical initials of the superstar in "The Actor" and the one playing the role more than a mere coincidence?

"I think so," laughed Nandy. "I think the initials for Amitabh Bachchan and Ashmit Bhargava say it all."

"Chand Bhai is very much on" - Nikhil Advani

After the debacle of Chandni Chowk To China, everyone has come down really hard on director Nikhil Advani. The fact that Nikhil's earlier film Salaam-e-Ishq was a big dud didn't help his cause either.

While Nikhil seems to have taken things in his stride, the media and gossip-mongers don't seem to stop with their Nikhil-bashing. Recently, there has been a lot of talk doing the rounds that Nikhil's forthcoming directorial venture Chand Bhai (supposedly starring Akshaye Khanna and Vidya Balan) has been shelved.

We decided to check with Nikhil if there is any truth to this story or whether it is just a figment of somebody's imagination. "No there is no truth to this story whatsoever. Chand Bhai is very much on. It's just that we have pushed the starting of the film to somewhere around July as a very close family friend has taken ill. You will hear an announcement on the status of the film very soon", says Nikhil.

Well, we hope, at least this clarification from Nikhil would put all rumors to rest

'Billu' is not similar to Rajnikant's 'Kuselan': Writer

Mumbai, Feb 11 (IANS) The buzz is that Shah Rukh Khan's "Billu Barber", now renamed "Billu", is inspired by Malayalam hit "Katha Parayumbol" (2007), which was later made in Tamil as "Kuselan" (2008). But the film's writer denies any similarity between the movies.

" 'Billu' is a completely different film," said Mushtaq Sheikh, co-writer of "Billu" along with director Priyadarshan.

"When you will see 'Billu', you will know what I mean. The screenplay of 'Billu' does not follow the route followed by the predecessors," said Sheikh, who was also the co-writer of Shah Rukh's blockbuster "Om Shanti Om".

While Mammootty played a superstar in "Katha Parayumbol", its Tamil version starred Rajnikant in the same role.

So has the screenplay of "Billu" been tweaked to make it more suitable for an all-India audience?

"One did not have to tweak it, one had to change it completely. I repeat - this film is a re-birth of 'Billu' (the character in the film). It's a brand new film with no connection with any other film," Sheikh told IANS.

Unlike "Katha Parayumbol", "Kuselan" had bombed in spite of Rajnikant's presence.

"How does that affect our film?" asks Sheikh. "There wasn't any doubt or fear in us when we were working on 'Billu'. 'Kuselan' working or not working was never going to hamper the flow of 'Billu'."

Sheikh added that he and Priyadarshan had sat down to give the film a new "touch and feel".

"This movie was made before and here we wanted to make a brand new film keeping the ingrained soul intact. Also, making a Hindi film is a totally different ball game than the ones that are made in the south. The people, the emotions, the landscape, the conflict - everything changes when we make Hindi movies. We knew it was never going to be easy," he makes a candid confession.

He is particularly ecstatic about the fact that with 'Billu', he could work with his real-life friend Shah Rukh yet again.

"For me Shah Rukh is like a beacon of light that guides me and inspires me. He is like family. He brings in a certain strength to my presence," he said fondly.

Featuring Lara Dutta in the lead with special appearances by Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, "Billu" also stars Priyadarshan regulars like Asrani, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Joshi and Rasika Joshi. With music by Pritam, "Billu" is all set to arrive Feb 13.

"SRK is planning a premiere for barber's associations" - Priyadarshan

It's final. Billu Barber will now be called Billu. And the director Priyadarshan seems resigned to the title's fate. "I'm in Chennai. Mr. Producer Shah Rukh tells me all the posters hoarding with credits will blacken out the word 'Barber'. If it was hurting anyone's sentiments I'm okay by it."

In a flash move to appease the hairdressers' associations of Mumbai, the premiere of Billu in Mumbai later this week will exclusively invite members of various barbers' and hairstylists' associations.

Priyadarshan reveals Billu's premiere plans. "As far as I know, Shah Rukh is planning a premiere for the various barbers and hairdressers' associations, so they'd see and know that the film doesn't ridicule them in any way. In fact Billu is homage to the hair-cutting technique. I can't understand how there can be a protest about the film or its title without anyone seeing the film."

The premiere, according to Priyan, won't invite Shah Rukh's friends from the industry, only members of the hair-cutting community. Priyadarshan wonders how the word 'Barber' could be okay in other languages and not in Hindi. "Does it mean half the Indian population is not put off by the title and the other half is upset about it? I don't understand the controversy. And I've left it entirely to my producer Shah Rukh Khan to deal with it."

Priyan has no plans of being in Mumbai for the release of Billu. "I've done my best. And Irrfan Khan in the title role is the best homage that can be paid to any profession." Priyan does wonder, and so do we, if we as a collective nation protest too much.

Nana the saviour!

major mob situation was triggered off last week during the shooting of Prakash Jha's Rajniti in Bhopal.

If it wasn't for the mass-friendly Nana Patekar's timely intervention, a part of the heavy crowd participating in a political rally scene would've gone out of control.

Says Prakash Jha, "It was a sequence where the ruling party was holding a rally to honour the Chief Minister, a group of activists led by Naseeruddin Shah had to descend on the rally to disrupt it."

A volatile sequence was being shot at the Kotra ground just outside Bhopal city where a massive stage had been erected to shoot the rally. When a part of the crowd went out of control, Prakash, known for his short temper while shooting, screamed at the crowds who apparently protested back in strong words and threatened to stop work.

It was Nana's intervention that saved the day. Says Nana, "I'm a bit upset with Prakash. What's the need to lose your temper? A creative artiste needs to preserve his energy for more valuable things. Unruly crowds are not a problem for me. I'm used to them. Prakash tends to scream at the crowds. But crowds are a congregation of faces. You just need to recognize those faces. Pyar do to sab waapas pyar dete hain."

Grins Prakash, "When I'm shooting I become a different person. Nana was a big help diffuse the tension. He keeps telling me not to scream. Crowd management isn't easy."

Album featuring Zakir Hussain wins Grammy for contemporary world music

LOS ANGELES: Album ‘Global Drum Project’, featuring Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju, Giovanni Hidalgo (Shout! Factory) and Indian tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has won the Grammy award for best contemporary world music album.

This is not the first Grammy that the tabla maestro has pocketed. In 1992, Planet Drum, an album co-created and produced by Zakir and Mickey Hart, was awarded the first-ever Grammy for best world music album.

However, two other Indians -- guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya and classical vocalist Lakshmi Shankar, lost out in the 'Best Traditional World Music' category.

Rahman responsible for Tamil films going global: Vivekh

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) If not for music composer A R Rehman, talent from Tamil filmdom would not have got their due recognition, noted Tamil comedian Vivekh has said.

"I do think that regional talent is not getting its due credit in the country. Our industry (Tamil films) has gone global, especially after A R Rahman entered the scene," Vivekh, who was conferred Padma Shri recently, told PTI over phone from Chennai.

"If our music is getting acknowledged globally today, it is because of Rahman. But Rahman is not the only one who is responsible for this, media is also one of the reasons," he said.

Chennai-born Rahman who made his entry through Roja in Tamil and Hindi simultaneously went on to attain stardom in both Tamil and Hindi films within years. He is also in the queue for Oscars, for his hit scores in "Slumdog Millionaire".

Vivekh, who was the first Tamil comedian to be bestowed with the Padma Shri award, refused to comment on veteran comedian Nagesh, who died just a week ago, not getting such an honour.

Vivekh said he was a great fan of Nagesh and he enjoyed his well-acclaimed movies -- Server Sundaram, Kaadalikka Neramillai and Neer Kumizhi.

Anil Kapoor in Slumdog Millionaire

Anil Kapoor will be seen in an international project soon. He has been roped in for a movie based on the popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati ‘. Oh, you’re wondering why Amitabh Bachchan wasn’t roped in? Well, the producers first choice was Amitabh Bachchan no doubt but he refused to do the film for some reason. Later, Shah Rukh Khan was offered the role but he too had to turn it down due to date problems.

Anil Kapoor was the next choice and he promptly agreed to be the quiz master in the movie. Irrfan Khan too has a substantial role in the movie. The movie has got some big names backing it alongwith A.R.Rehman giving the music and Gulzar penning the lyrics.

The movie is based on an international bestseller named "Q and A " by an Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup . The story revolves around a slum dweller who goes on to win a fortune in the game show only to be put behind bars on accusations of cheating.

The movie seems to be scheduled for a world premier in the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Irrfan Khan has previously acted in a few international projects like The Namesake , A Mighty Heart etc. while for Anil Kapoor this will be the first time that he gets to act in a project of this stature. Will the international audience accept this ever green actor of Indian cinema? Only time will tell.

'Slumdog' 'Benjamin Button' up for BAFTA awards

London, Feb 8 (PTI) "Slumdog Millionaire" with 11 nominations including for best picture is one of this year's front-runners for the British film awards, popularly known as the BAFTAs, along with "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

The British Academy Film Awards draws a large contingent of Hollywood talent alongside the British stars and is seen as an indicator of who will win at the Oscars.

"Slumdog Millionaire," British director Danny Boyle's underdog saga about a Mumbai street boy is widely expected to maintain its winning march in the British equivalent of Oscars after its triumph at the Golden Globes and a slew of awards given by Hollywood writers, producers and critics.

Among the 11 nominations for the movie set and shot in Mumbai are for Best Film, Best Leading Actor for 18-year-old Dev Patel, Best Music for Indian maestro A R Rahman and Best Director for Danny Boyle.

It is competing for best picture against "Benjamin Button," which stars Brad Pitt as a man who ages backwards, political drama "Frost/Nixon," biopic "Milk" and Nazi-themed drama "The Reader."

I am better than size-zero: Kareena Kapoor

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) She started the trend of size-zero with her stunning slim figure in "Tashan" but Bollywood queen Kareena Kapoor feels that she is better than size-zero.
Kareena's new figure has earned her both praises as well as criticism.

On one hand, the actress has been credited with promoting healthy lifestyle and the benefits of yoga while on the other hand she has been termed as anorexic by many.

"I think I am not size-zero atleast I look better than that I believe in the power of yoga and I swear by it," she said.

Kareena who was here for the launch of a 'Beauty Advisor Training Programme' by Anne French feels that her good figure and glowing skin can be attributed to the fact that she "drinks lots of water and is a hard core veggie".

The 'Jab We Met' star is also considered a youth icon.

"I identify myself with the youth of this country it is a responsibility if I am considered a youth icon," she told reporters.

Kareena starts her day with "60 surya namaskars for half an hour" feels that "yoga is a way of life".

Luck By Chance

is easy to fall in love with every performance in this intimate yet generic insider's look at the workings of the entertainment industry.

But the one that I carried home with me was Sheeba Chadha. A marvel of subtle writing, Sheeba plays a podgy cunning but simple-hearted producer's sister-in-law whose husband (Aly Khan) is carrying on with a struggling starlet right under her naïve eyes.

One not-so-pleasant afternoon Sheeba barges into her husband's van and sees a red-nosed bleary-eyed Konkona (who has just been told she doesn't get a role she has been waiting all her career for). Sheeba senses what's going on. But she quickly digresses her mind from her husband's extra-marital affair.

The industry is filled with such deliberately desensitized people who function within the fickle and frighteningly flamboyant film industry with gut-wrenching self-delusion.

Luck By Chance, a truly out-of-the-box outstanding work of subtle sly satirical and whispering art, is filled with people whom you're bound to have met in the fetid corridors of Bollywood, or the Hindi film industry, as the star-mother Dimple Kapadia insists in calling it.

Never before has the film industry been perceived with such intuitively internalized abundance. A subtle splendor galvanized by performances that range from the credible to the incredible, takes the narrative to pinnacles of expressiveness. The performances help to ignite the characters into states of subtle yet vivid shades. The ambitious mother-daughter Dimple-Isha Sharwani pair, the strugglers , wannabes and losers...oh yes, every character in Luck By Chance possesses a luminously lived-in quality, bringing to the surface feelings thoughts and images that are normally not brought out on screen

Every player, parodic, poignant and pitched perfectly, makes savage fun of the very foibles that they probably practice with masterful manipulative hands in real life. Zoya gets into the star-space without a moment's aggression her storytelling. The moments that define the relationships are built stealthily. This is a world that every person in the Mumbai film industry (for Dimple Kapadia's sake, let's not call it Bollywood!) knows first-hand. The debutante director occupies that space with unostentatious spirit, nurturing interludes between characters (the two strugglers Farhan-Konkona, producer-wife Rishi-Juhi, ideologically-separated co-actors Farhan-Arjun Mathur...) with the cautious care of a mother who wants to bring up her child with the right values without drawing attention to her nurturing acumen.

This is a work of tender subtle care with moments whose immense value strikes you after the wonderfully conversational dialogues (Javed Akhtar at his expressive best) have had their say. At heart Luck By Chance is a story of one man's plunge into the morass of compromise as he heads towards his dreams.

Farhan Akhtar gets what can only be called another chance to do the histrionic dance. As he goes from wide-eyed wannabe to a morally devalued creature, the narrative charts his course with savage humour. Farhan's scenes with the nakedly adulatory star-daughter (Isha Srawani, playing dumb dead-on) are designed as a blend of satirical erotica and ideological annihilation. Farhan gets it right.

This is work that oozes outstanding acting talent from every nook and corner. Whether it's Aly Khan as an on-the-move producer or Arjun Mathur as a struggling actor who would rather struggle in theatre than compromise, every character plays a person you've met if you've ever been a part of the Mumbai film industry. Super stand-out performances by Rishi Kapoor , Dimple Kapadia, Sheeba Chadha, Hrithik Roshan (as a superstar on the skids) and of course Konkona Sensharma whose best performance this is.

On the deficit side (yes even a film of such a high order must face the music) the narrative with its inbuilt jokes and references is too much a Bollywood's insider's job , largely inaccessible to the common man who won't know Ranbir Kapoor's secretary's name, and couldn't care less.

On most levels Luck By Chance stands tall and luminous portraying the world of arc lights with a synthesis of style sympathy and substance that are the opposite of the synthetic way the synthetic world of showbiz is generally portrayed in the cinema.

What stays with you are the moments, like the one where the struggler-hero approaches the once-glamorous star-mother at a party and wins her over ....a moment that builds up into a muffled explosion of ambitious scheming achieved at a place where the sound of broken hearts is inaudible.

Movie Review: Dev D

There's a major difference between K.L. Saigal, Dilip Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and Abhay Deol's Devdas. The first three films were faithful to Sarat Chandra's legendary novella, while Anurag Kashyap's deviant take on Devdas is contemporary and in the process, differs from the original work.

In Kashyap's DEV D, Dev is into drugs and vodka. Paro sends her nude pic to Dev via email and later, wants Dev to have sex with her in the fields. Chanda, a hooker, indulges in phone sex mainly. Clearly, Kashyap's Dev, Paro and Chanda are audacious and rebellious.

There's no harm if you pick up an enticing story and tell it your way, but Kashyap goes a bit too far, crosses all limits and tends to get abstract once again. And that's the reason for DEV D's downfall.

To Kashyap's credit, a number of individualistic scenes are interestingly handled. Unfortunately, the proceedings gyrate from absorbing to boring to yawn-inducing. The writing [screenplay: Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane] lacks consistency.

So what's the final word? Does Kashyap redeem himself after the boring and listless NO SMOKING? Unfortunately, he doesn't. Watching DEV D is akin to doing atyachaar on oneself!

Son of a rich industrialist, who is sent away to London when he was 12, Dev [Abhay Deol] returns to his hometown and to Paro [Mahi Gill], his childhood sweetheart. Inseparable as they seem, a misunderstanding puts their lives in a tizzy; Paro is married off to someone else and Dev goes into severe depression.

Not one to take on responsibilities for his acts, Dev digs deep into drugs and alcohol for salvation. He stays away from home, but his finances still come from a doting father.

Lenny [Kalki] likes to live her life on the edge -- a rich student with a penchant for adventure. After a devastating MMS scandal, she's abandoned by her family and is forced into isolation. As a runaway, she finds shelter with Chunni, a pimp. With great determination and inner strength she adopts an alter ego -- Chanda.

As Chanda, she gets to be a high profile escort by night, while Lenny remains a college student by day. At this juncture, Dev enters her life…

Despite the fact that you know the basic plotline of DEV D even before the reels begin to unfold, what you're keen to know is, how has Kashyap executed the subject? The sequences between Dev and Paro at the start are captivating and the volatile relationship they share makes you realize that Kashyap is on the right track. Note the altercation between Dev and Paro, which prompts Paro to marry Bhuvan, who's much older to her, besides being a father of two.

Post Paro's marriage, DEV D starts going downhill. Lenny/Chanda's MMS scandal is straight out of life and the reasons that make her turn into a hooker are well explained. But the sequences between Dev and Chanda lack fizz. Equally sad are the scenes between Dev and Chunni. Besides, there's not much movement in the story after a point and the goings-on get boring. The journey to the climax is prolonged and tedious.

Amit Trivedi's music sounds good to the ears. 'Emosanal Attyachaar' is already popular, besides a couple of other songs ['Nayan Tarse' and 'Pardesi']. But there're too many songs in the narrative. Rajeev Ravi's cinematography captures the rustic look of North India well.

Abhay Deol is natural. Mahi is decent, while Kalki shows sparks in a few scenes only. The balance cast, including the actor playing Chunni, are strictly okay.

On the whole, DEV D is NO SMOKING II. Does one elaborate more?

Movie Review: Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye

I'd like to pose a few questions to those associated with MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE…

The first question is to writer-director Madhureeta Anand. What were you thinking when you wrote this script? And, most importantly, did you ever realize what you were making, while filming it?

The second question is to the three actors, Randeep Hooda, Raima Sen and Arbaaz Khan. Did you take a script narration? If you did take one, did you comprehend it? The third question is to producers Ajay Bijli and Sanjeev K. Bijli. What prompted you to back this project? Did you go through the script?

Watching MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE is akin to flying in an aircraft without a pilot. Seriously, what kind of cinema is this? MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE is a terrible waste of time, money, efforts and precious raw stock.

Maya [Raima Sen] lives in New Delhi, is married to Vikram [Arbaaz Khan] and has a daughter Priya [Eka Kumari Singh]. Maya's life is mundane and centres around her family.

One evening, she overhears a conversation between her husband and another woman and realises that he's having an affair. Her simple, family-centric life around her breaks down and she realises how Vikram had slowly degenerated her confidence and self-esteem in the past few years of their marriage. He stopped her from singing and abandoned all her dreams.

During a conversation with her neighbour Mrs. Mathur [Suhasini Mulay], who is looking for an ideal tenant, she conjures up her fantasy man, Jai [Randeep Hooda]. Through Jai, who keeps reoccurring in her dreams in different avtaars, she regains her confidence. He inspires her to pursue her ultimate dream of singing.

With the help of her neighbours, a young band [Neil Bhoopalam, Juhi Pandey], she embarks on realising her dreams.

The multiplex culture has given birth to all kinds of cinema -- good, bad, rubbish, boring. MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE is all this and more -- it's senseless. It makes you wonder whether you're actually watching a film or you're in deep slumber, dreaming of being in a plex, watching a bizarre film.

If the story is weird, the screenplay is outlandish. Why does the couple [Arbaaz, Raima] drift apart? Raima has been a loving wife, a doting mother, who has never shied away from her responsibilities. Yet, the husband is always complaining.

Worse, Raima's fantasy [Randeep in various avtaars] only makes you rub your eyes in disbelief. Actually, you went through similar emotions [upset, angry, disgusted] while watching Anurag Kashyap's nonsensical NO SMOKING.

Lalit Sen's music is listless. Viraj Sinh's cinematography is just okay.

Raima is a talented actor, but she should channelize her energies on better scripts and roles. Randeep is unintentionally funny. Arbaaz is wasted. Amongst supporting actors, only Neil Bhoopalam stands out. Ashwini Kalsekar, Anjan Srivastava and Suhasini Mulay are wasted.

On the whole, this khwaab is more of a nightmare.

Movie Review: Chal Chala Chal

This week is special! Three new releases -- DEV D, MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE and CHAL CHALA CHAL -- and all three are vying for 'Worst Film Of The Week' award. The winner is, hold your breath, CHAL CHALA CHAL. It wins hands down!

There's nothing right about this comedy, which turns out to be a tragedy for the hapless viewer. The direction is bad, the script is pathetic, the editor seems to have gone on a vacation, the actors scream their lungs out…

CHAL CHALA CHAL rests on an outdated concept, something that might've worked 35/40 years ago. On second thoughts, CHAL CHALA CHAL is so bad, it would've failed even then.

Deepak [Govinda], a simpleton, has been switching jobs as he does not want to succumb to the corrupt system. Since years, with unwavering efforts, financial hardships and an unshaken faith in the judicial systems, he has been helping his father [Om Puri] in a legal matter.

His father is fighting a court case against the school to get his due provident fund and pension. He later wins the case and the school is ordered to give a part of its property as compensation, if there is no money in its funds. And thus Deepak's life gets an addition: a bus.

Instead of selling it off, acting on his father's advice, he decides to run the bus, while the rest of the family members -- two sisters Chhaya and Arpana [Upasana Singh and Amita Nangia] and the ghar jamai-husbands [Asrani and Manoj Joshi] -- are against it. Their primary interest is in selling off the house.

Sundar [Rajpal Yadav], who is desperately trying for an American Visa, is also an age-old friend. He comes in handy with initial investments and they establish a company, Chal Chala Chal Transport. And so begins the ride of their lives.

You ought to have nerves of steel to bear this film. There's no story in the first place and the screenplay, hence, is non-existent. Worse, the edit is so bad that, for a second, you feel the reels may've got interchanged in the projection room.

Here's a sincere advice to Govinda: Act your age. It's indeed sad to see the actor being reduced to such roles. Rajpal Yadav is wasted as well. And what is Om Puri doing in this film? The remaining actors [Asrani, Manoj Joshi, Razzak Khan, Asif Basra, Murli Sharma, Upasana Singh, Amita Nangia and Reema Sen] are mechanical.

On the whole, CHAL CHALA CHAL is a terrible film in all respects. Move over CC2C, CCC is here

I would like to work with Kareena again: Shahid Kapur

Mumbai, Feb 6 (IANS) Shahid Kapur says he doesn't mind working with ex-girlfriend Kareena Kapoor if a filmmaker wanted him to.

“I would like to work with her again. I feel that as an actor if my producer wants me to romance with a cow or a buffalo also, I'll do it because that's my job,” Shahid said on Zee News' celebrity chat show “Kahiye Janab”.

Shahid and Kareena teamed up for three films. While "Fida" and "Chup Chup Ke" bombed at the box office, "Jab We Met" was a blockbuster. Sadly, their relationship soured while shooting for this romantic comedy.

Now Shahid is linked with India's tennis star Sania Mirza.

Asked about Sania, he said: “She is a very good friend of mine, but I don't want to discuss my personal life.”

Jimmy Sheirgill to play SRK's brother in My Name Is Khan

After bagging accolades from one and all for his powerhouse act in A Wednesday, things certainly seem to be looking brighter for Jimmy Sheirgill. The talented actor has been signed to play a pivotal role in Karan Johar's much talked about SRK- Kajol starrer My Name Is Khan.

If the buzz is to be believed, then Jimmy plays the role of SRK's brother in the film. The role was earlier supposed to be played by Jimmy's co-star from A Wednesday, Aamir Bashir. It may be recalled that Jimmy had starred with Shah Rukh way back in 2000 in Yash Raj Films' Mohabbatein.

Jimmy surely must be hoping that this time too, his pairing with SRK manages to strike gold at the B.O.

Jaya Prada to play Shilpa Shetty's mother in an Indo-Chinese film - The Desire

During the eighties and nineties, Jaya Prada was one of the most popular actresses in Bollywood. Having created a niche for herself, this South Indian beauty was part of many hit films.

However, slowly the actress faded into oblivion and was not seen on the silver screen for a while. Her last Hindi film was the Sanjay Dutt starrer Tathastu which released three years back. Since then the actress turned MP has been busy with her various social and political commitments.

However, now Jaya Prada is all set to make a comeback of sorts to the silver screen. The actress would be seen in the much talked about Indo-Chinese film The Desire which stars Shilpa Shetty. Jaya plays Shilpa's mother in the film and is also an Odissi dancer.

During her prime days, Jaya was considered as a great dancer. Wonder if she is still able to move and groove like before. Your guess is as good as ours!

Veteran American actor James Whitmore dies at 87

Los Angeles, Feb 7 (PTI) Emmy award winning veteran American actor James Whitmore has died at the age of 87.
Whitmore died of lung cancer at his home in Malibu yesterday, his son Steve Whitmore said. The actor was diagnosed with the disease in November last year.

A World War II Marine Corps veteran, Whitmore bore a striking resemblance to actor Spencer Tracy. He was best known for his popular one-man shows about American leaders Harry Truman, Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt.

Whitmore won a Tony Award in 1948 for outstanding performance by a newcomer for his role of a cynical Army Air Forces sergeant in the Broadway production of "Command Decision." After Broadway, he moved to Hollywood, where he received an Oscar Award nomination for best supporting actor for his second film, the 1949 World War II drama "Battleground", the 'Los Angeles Times' reported.

Whitmore's performance in 1975 film "Give 'em Hell, Harry!" earned him the best actor Oscar nomination.

He went on to act in over 50 movies including "The Asphalt Jungle," "Them!," "Kiss Me Kate," "Battle Cry," "Oklahoma!," "Planet of the Apes," "Tora! Tora! Tora!," "The Serpent's Egg," "Nuts," and "The Majestic", the paper said.

Whitmore also won an Emmy Award in 2000 as outstanding guest actor in drama series "The Practice".

'My acting style similar to my mother'

Amitabh Bachchan is an icon for many a budding actor but his son, Abhishek says his own acting style is more like that of his mother, Jaya.

"Dad is an inspiration to the whole world. His creativity, dedication are legendary. He is a great source of inspiration. However, my acting style is more like my mother. I would like to believe that I have the best of both," the junior Bachchan told PTI in an email interview.

Abhishek, who suffered a setback at the box-office with Drona last year, hopes for a turnaround with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's ambitious film about Delhi.

The actor considers himself to be lucky to to get the opportunity to work with some great veterans in Mehra's film.

"The script was novel and had a great narrative but the clinching factor was the cast. When Rakeysh discussed with me who he wanted to cast in the film, I just knew that I had to be a part of this film.

"Where will any actor get the opportunity to stand in the same frame as all these great actors we had in this film. It was an awesome experience," Abhishek said.

The story of Dilli 6 is set in the backdrop of the walled city. Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri and Atul Kulkarni are in important roles in the film which has Abhishek and Sonam Kapoor in the lead.

When asked about his character in the movie, Abhishek, who is celebrating his 33rd birthday tomorrow, said, "I am playing the character of Rohan Mehra who is born and brought up in New York.

"Roshan has never been to India but the course of the film brings him to his ancestral home for the first time. The challenge of the character was to stick out and blend into the surroundings." he said.

I don't regret my bit role in 'Pink Panther': Aishwarya Rai

Mumbai, Much has been written about Aishwarya Rai's so-called minuscule role in Hollywood film "Pink Panther 2". While the actress admits it is an out-and-out Steve Martin film, she maintains she signed it for an enriching experience and not for extra footage.

"It's a bit silly and exhausting to even talk about the length of my role based on what's seen in the trailers. Did anyone question my role in 'Khakee' when there was only one shot of me in the promo? Isn't that a very myopic view of contemporary acting? In my very first film 'Iruvar', I thought I transcended this footage fetish," Aishwarya told IANS.

Aishwarya, a former Miss World, doesn't regret doing the film.

"I didn't work in 'Pink Panther 2' because it was an international project. I got the script. I happily chose to be part of the film. They shot exactly what I was offered. I don't need to work with stardust in my eyes.

"Of course, 'Pink Panther' is a Steve Martin vehicle. Is that something to question? All the rest of the wonderful cast including Jean Reno and Andy Garcia play supporting roles. I treasure the experience of working in 'Pink Panther 2'."

Aishwarya says footage is not a burning issue for her.

"The choices I've made in my career aren't just about footage but an opportunity to work with actors, directors and technicians who enrich my life. Believe me working in 'Pink Panther' was a joy.

"It was a wonderful experience working with a stalwart like Steve Martin and the rest of the cast and crew. Why spoil it by questioning how much footage I have? So many Indian actors have worked in international ensemble casts."

The actress attended the film's premiere in New York Tuesday along with husband Abhishek Bachchan.

"They wanted me to be here for the film's promotion from earlier on. But I couldn't because of my prior commitments in India. We've a series of premieres lined up, which started in New York on Feb 3. From there it's a crazy whirlwind trip that will take me to several countries and continents from Paris to Berlin to Moscow to Madrid.

"The final destination for my 15-day trip will take me to a screening at the Berlin film festival. Then I'm back and I go straight to resume Mani Ratnam's film."

It is a double celebration for Aishwarya in New York this week. First is the premiere of "Pink Panther 2" that is followed by Abhishek's birthday Thursday. The couple plans to celebrate his birthday in style.

"Abhishek is in New York with me. But he won't be able to accompany me for my other premieres because he has to be in India for the promotion of 'Delhi 6'," said Aishwarya, who returns to India Feb 14.

Interestingly, Aishwarya was offered the lead opposite Will Smith in "Seven Pounds" which opens in Mumbai this week.

"Will Smith and I will work together for sure," laughed Aishwarya. "There have been a number of offers. Dates just don't work out. If he's keen to work with me, so am I," said the actress.

Akshay Kumar to host second season of 'Khatron Ke Khiladi'

New Delhi, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is set to return to the small screen as the host of the second season of “Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi”, which promises to feature bigger stars and meaner stunts.

“The show is going to be a notch higher in terms of bigger celebrity participants than the last season, the difficulty level of challenges and even Akshay Kumar. The inclusion of the common man as a co-contender will definitely create a lot of excitement,” said Ashvini Yardi, programming head, Colors.

For season two, the auditions will be held in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow and Ahmedabad starting Feb 9

“Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi" debuted in July 2008 and was won by model Nethra Raghuraman, who walked away with Rs.5 million prize money.

'Luck By Chance', 'Victory' have poor show at box office

New Delhi, Zoya Akhtar's first film "Luck By Chance" may have got rave reviews, but it has failed to set the cash registers ringing at the box office. Cricket-based film "Victory" by debutant director Ajitpal Mangat too fell flat.

Both these medium-budget releases of last week (Jan 30) have proven to be duds in terms of business. Despite much appreciation by critics in India and abroad, “Luck By…” got a slow initial on the opening day with the counters warming up in the evening.

The momentum did stay over the weekend, but started dwindling Monday onwards.

On the other hand, the cricket drama starring Hurman S. Baweja has proved to be a debacle with no takers at the windows. Despite mixed reviews and some appreciation for Hurman's portrayal of an underdog cricketer, the film couldn't lure audiences.

“It doesn't happen with too many movies. Surprisingly, the collections for a genuinely well-made movie like 'Luck By Chance' haven't been as per expectations over the opening weekend. The film has seen a good release but the occupancy at theatres has only been near 50 percent,” trade analyst and critic Joginder Tuteja told IANS.

“As for 'Victory', it has turned out to be one the lowest openers in the last many months with only around 20 percent odd collections and that too only at single screens. There wasn't much buzz about the film to begin with and somehow as the film got close to the release, the interest level only continued to go down. Promotion was weak, promos uneven and marketing uninspiring,” he added.

Said Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor: “Sports movies are not that successful in India and considering the disastrous record of Hurman's first movie 'Love Story 2050', 'Victory' already had less chances of survival.

“So far as 'Luck By…' is concerned, the movie is being appreciated for its true flavour and the inside look of Bollywood, but business-wise it could rake in whatever was possible only over the first three-days,” he explained.

Produced by Excel Entertainment in association with Big Pictures, "Luck By Chance" stars Zoya's brother Farhan Akhtar and an ensemble cast featuring Konkona Sen Sharma, Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Hrithik Roshan and Isha Sharvani.

It is the story of an aspiring actor who arrives in Mumbai to make it big in Bollywood.

On the other hand, “Victory” produced by Mangat and Manmohan Shetty is the story of a father's dream to see his son become a national cricketer.

Released over 900 screens worldwide, Excel's Ritesh Sidhwani did not divulge any details about the budget of “Luck By Chance” while “Victory”, which hit close to 500 screens in India, was made at around Rs.400 million.

However, keeping the box-office boat steady have been Vishesh Films' “Raaz - The Mystery Continues" and Danny Boyle's Oscar-nominated underdog drama “”Slumdog Millionaire”.

Despite being in the second week, while, the former had already proven to be 2009s first hit, the latter has also picked up the momentum because of the hype due to the 10 Oscar nominations.

There is no one in my life: Genelia

New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) Genelia D'Souza, who won hearts with her girl-next-door image in last year's hit “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na”, says she isn't seeing anyone and right now her main concern is her upcoming film “It's My Life”.

"I'm pretty much like Aditi from 'Jaane Tu…'. There's no one in my life. I'm even shooting on Valentine's Day," Genelia told IANS here.

Helmed by writer-turned director Aneez Bazmee, “It's My Life” is a remake of the 2006 Telugu hit "Bommarillu". Genelia played the female lead in the original opposite southern actor Siddharth Narayan and won the Telugu Filmfare best actress award for the film.

“The film's Telugu version was blockbuster down south. Aneez sir has done a terrific job with the film and I hope the Hindi version is as successful as the Telugu one,” Genelia said.

In the film, she teams up with Hurman S. Baweja, who was written off by the critics after his debut vehicle "Love Story 2050" turned turtle at the box office.

Asked her if she had any apprehensions working with Hurman, Genelia said: “I would not like to comment on that but I just hope my film does really well”.

Produced by Boney Kapoor and Sridevi, “It's My Life” also stars Nana Patekar.

The actress, who is the new brand ambassador of Fanta, was in the capital to launch Coca Cola India's Fanta's new flavour Fanta Apple.

The 21-year-old wants to do all kinds of roles.

“I'll take any role that challenges me. After all, it's only films that make the bigger picture for me,” she said.

Not many know that Genelia also had her opinion about Bollywood during her years of struggle.

“Like a normal middle class girl, I initially believed that it's (Bollywood) a big bad industry, but now I've realised that it treats you how you want it to treat you. I look at it now as a career opportunity than anything else,” she said.

Apart from "It's My Life", she would also be seen in David Dhawan's “Hook Ya Crook” and Rumy Jafry's “Life Partner”.
