Money makes the world go round, and also makes Bollywood make more frequent trips to Delhi. Aise hi thodi na there are so many more films being set and shot in the capital. The Delhi audience is a big deal for Bollywood because the numbers show that Delhi is a close second to Mumbai now in terms of business.
There are far more multiplexes here, and any finance guy will tell you that multiplexes make more money than single screen theatres. The land crunch in Mumbai and its suburbs means that Delhi/NCR, which is seeing a spurt in development – more malls, more townships, a cash-rich public – is the place for which exhibitors, especially multiplexes, are now making a beeline.
Plus, box-office collections show that Delhi-UP is now the second largest financial centre in India. There are often more shows here, and the slowdown in collections from one week to the next is also less than that in Mumbai. Exhibitors and producers see huge potential for more halls, more screens and greater collections from this belt.
And that's why, promotions and press conferences are all targeted towards Delhi. Akshay Kumar jumps off roofs, Abhishek Bachchan sets a record for the most city visits in 24 hours, going to places in and around Delhi, Aamir Khan gives buzz cuts in Bengali Market. A Delhi press conference – sometimes more than one – is mandatory before the release of a film, and premieres of films like "Delhi-6" and " Peepli Live" have been held in Delhi.
And all of this means ke Delhi ke line producers ki chandi hi chandi hai. These guys, who provide the infrastructural support for film shoots, say that business in Delhi has more than doubled in the past few years, and the line producers of most Hollywood films shot in India are based in Delhi too. Delhi ke paas itna cinemaa hai – shall we call it Dollywood now?
