A year of sequels for Bollywood

If a film’s already clicked at the box office, there are equally high chances of its sequel being a hit too.

So, it’s hardly surprising to see that Bollywood has more than a dozen sequels in store for the audiences this year, making it a year of sequels.

And it’s not only sequels of recent releases that are expected to hit the marquee soon, but also sequels to films that released decades ago like Mr India and there’s also buzz about sequels to Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham, Murder, Prince, All the Best, Sarfarosh, Andaz Apna Apna and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron being in the offing.

While some are dishing out the second installments — Don 2, Houseful 2, Dostana 2, Dabanng 2, Most Wanted, Krrish 2, Race 2, Double Dhamal, Partner 2, No Entry 2 tentatively titled Be Positive — there are others readying for their third — Dhoom 3 — and in the case of Golmaal and Hera Pheri, their fourth installment as well.

Trade analysts point out that it’s an established trend in Hollywood that’s only caught up here of late. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “The biggest advantage is that the film can get established as a franchisee and depending on its success it makes it easier to get stars and the eyeballs for the next film. Audiences are already curious too.”

Trade analyst Amod Mehra adds, “Sequels being familiar territory, the film-maker is more confident about the characters as their graphs are already established, so the risk factor is reduced.”

Film-maker Rohit Shetty (Golmaal) however says, “There are themes that lend themselves to sequels easily. But they can fail if they seem forced too.”

Film-maker duo Abbas-Mustan too agree that it’s easier to create a buzz for the sequel, but insist that sequels come with their own risks.

“There will always be comparisons with the prequel, so they can also fail miserably,” says Abbas.

Film-maker Milan Luthria too says that he wouln’t mind a sequel for his own film, but “there has to be a genuine story. If a film-maker has that, then a sequel should of course be made.”
